These are my rare 1980 Ludwig Buddy Rich Drum Set Model which has that huge Ludwig drum sound. Buddy went back to Ludwig drums back in mid 1978. I bought these drums back in 1980 with the 14x24 inch bass drum, 9x13 inch tom, two 16x16 inch floor tom, and the great 5x14 inch Ludwig Super Sensitive snare drum. All original Ludwig Hercules hardware with speed king pedal. Of course got to have the cannister drum throne. These Ludwig drums has that big wide open drum tuning that Buddy, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Joe Morello and so many other drummers had with their Ludwig drums. I using a lot of the old school great technique that I learned from Buddy Rich and Joe Morello. That is my drum solo workout that I did using so much of these drum technique I have learned. Just an amazing sounding 1980 Ludwig set of drums. That Super sensitive snare drum is just amazing for it`s super crisp sound and projection. I have used these very Ludwig drums with my Ken Loomer Big Band. Here is a video • Driving Big Band Drumm... That Ludwig Huge Drum sound fits the drum technique I have learned so well.

Over the years Buddy used a few different kits, including Ludwig, Vox, Rogers, but he mainly used Slingerland. While recovering from a heart attack in 1983, Rich was presented with a 1940s-vintage Slingerland Radio King set, refurbished by Joe MacSweeney of Eames Drums, which he used until his death in 1987. Anyway nice sounding Ludwig drums :D

Buddy also used Fibes drums for only 5 months in 1967.He also used to start his 1983 tour a set of DW drums, for only a month, and then Buddy had his big heart attack and never used those drums again. Like you said he played those 40`s Slingerland Radio King drums starting in 1983, which he loved playing. He said the Slingerland Radio King snare drum was the best he ever played on. Not to many of these Buddy Rich 1980 Ludwig drum sets were made. They are excellent drums and I have used them with my Big Band ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xADGOBaOntA.html Thanks for your comment.

Ludwig no longer makes the Super Sensitive snare drum which is a great sounding drum that is crisp and great for rim shots. I got to know Buddy and he was always so kind to me. Even got a drum lesson from the master. I told Buddy one time that I wanted to have a Big Band like his because I love the music he played so much. He said " Don`t ever let anyone tell you can`t your own Big Band to play the music you love. Just work hard young man and do it". Well I did work hard and have my own Ken Loomer Big Band. I`m sure Buddy would be proud of me having my own Big Band. @@KenLoomer That '69 kit is sweet! My current Luds are maples, green sparkle and a blonde lacquer ( my primary kit) both 26/14/16/18. I played in heavy metal bar bands periodically from late '80s to late '90s but am a much better player now that I've not been in a working band for many yrs. Go figure. I'll certainly pick up some bits from your playing and work at them! I dig the feel/sounds you get with those one-handed double note snare rolls you do combined with sparse tom notes accompanying it. Great sound. One thing I need to do is get a 13" tom ...I tune high with the res head even higher, but you just can't get that classic high end _'boing'_ tom-tom tone out of a 14" ...close but not the same.

I LOVE the sound of this kit! Does the size of the drums(especially a 24” kick vs a 20” kick) change/influence your feel or the way you play around the kit?
@KenLoomer
@KenLoomer 8 месяцев назад
The size of a bass drum for sure influence my feel of how I play around the drum set. A smaller bass drum like a 18 or 20 inch size is what I use when I play with a smaller jazz band like my trio or jazz quartet, I use the smaller bass drum for accents. With this bigger bass drum I use it a lot more to feather it and give more of a drive to the Big Band music I`m playing. Thanks for your comment.
@ExtremeRecluse

I notice drummers have different grips. Is this the standard for jazz? Left up right down. How does it affect playing and power?
@KenLoomer
@KenLoomer 7 месяцев назад
If you are not a drummer, then you would know I`m using the traditional hand grip which is best for jazz. You can see the left hand grip is different than the right. The other grip is the matched grip that most rock drummers use. I use both grips when playing to the music I`m doing. The traditional grip can be played with lots of power if you have seen a Buddy Rich video. You must know that hitting a drum harder no matter what grip you use will produce a level of sound that the drum can reach. A drum can only reach a certain level of volume. Hitting the drum more harder will not make it louder, so you are just wasting energy. You have to use mic`s to make the drums louder. The traditional left hand grip is much better for playing softer comp to the music at fast tempo`s.

Dave Weckle uses this technique also.

This drum set was first used by the great Gene Krupa back in 1936. Back then the only size floor toms made were 16x16. So Gene wanted two 16x16 floor toms and tuned each one at a different pitch.
