Raiders (11-5) return to the playoffs after a two-year absence and face off against the Oilers (11-5) and former Raider teammates Ken Stabler, Dave Casper and Jack Tatum.
Las Vegas raiders can't find quarterback like Jim Plunkett raiders though they could win a quarterback from Fresno st. now they got nothing can't find a clutch player committed to excellence
yeah it was sad to see those Raider greats get beat so bad by their former team. But they were all near the end of their careers, so AL Davis knew what he was doing by trading them at the right time.
Exceptionally accurate? The guy had a 51% completion percentage in 1980. He was far from accurate. Even Kenny Stabler, known as a great QB in his day, had 13 TDs and an astounding 28 INTS in 1980! Horrendous numbers for both QBs.
Rules for football were different at this time. Defensive backs had a huge advantage over receivers. Head slaps, holding down the field, bump and run, stickum, etc. were all legal Completing passes were much more challenging at that time. QBs going 40 att/22comp for 230 yards and one TD pass was a pretty productive game.
I remember this game I was working at KFC in Fremont CA a senior in high school and a lifelong Raider fan. It was weird to see Stabler, Casper and Tatum playing for the other side (my Daughter is named Tatum) I got off work at 2 pm and was in an insane hurry to get home before the second half started
yeah that was bizarre to see three of the Raiders best players on the previous Super Bowl team get traded and then happen to play their first game as opponents vs. their old team in Oakland during a crucial playoff game. And all three were no factor at all except for Stabler who had a horrible game getting sacked 6 times and throwing a pick 6 to Lester Hayes.
So ended the Oilers' mini-dynasty (1978-1980) prematurely. In 1978 and 1979 it looked like the Raider dynasty was over and the Oilers were beginning one. But convention brought the Old Guard back and the latter stubbed its toe here. Houston faded as Earl Campbell's body broke down, only reloading by 1987, the beginning of seven straight one and done playoff exits for the Oilers. The Chargers also had a dynasty that barely happened, 1979-1982 although two visits to the AFC Title Game were better than many franchises could dream of. Finally the Eagles would-be dynasty was short-circuited by Dick Vermeil's burnout, 1978-1981. Not good to be sleeping in your office as an NFL coach.
dark side: my ex brother in law played for the oilers, drafted in 1980. In 1989 he was traded and subsequently cut from the Chargers before the season started. Tim Smith, football star his entire life, quickly lost his mind as he was no longer THE STAR. He walked away from his family at this time; my sister and the fours kids under the age of ten that he "fathered". Thankfully my sister divorced that POS and moved on, spending the next 35 years with a math teacher she met when she went back to college get her masters in mathematics (which she taught until her recent retirement). That man was the real hero of the story, having helped her raise Smith's kids, build a home that was safe and loving for them to grow up in. Still together today! Pro athletes are often like child actors... they crumble once they're outta the game. Smith having been kid worshipped by his parents for his entire life didn't help. He had NO TOOLS for existing outside of being the football star he was in his youth. When I was young he was the world to me, and later in life I realized what an immature, hopelessly lost man he was, you know, after being caught cheating w/ a cheerleader in Houston and then the cocaine, and then the embezzlement and subsequent prison time. Now, his alcoholic father is dead along with his enabling mother, and his brother will never speak to him again. Ah, the life of a pro athlete can be so rewarding.
I was always a fan of “the snake” and was so excited when he came to the oilers but never was able to lead Houston to a Super Bowl, Meanwhile Plunkett who replaced Pastorini was able to lead the raiders to two super bowls and didn’t just get there won them both, who would of thought that going into that trade, between the oilers and raiders, I was a die hard oilers fan and was very disappointed
@@MatthewBaumgarten Stabler was way past his prime when he got to Houston. And as he said, not on a team that was as good as the Raider teams he played for.
Houston had Dan pasterini and he went to the RAIDERS and he lost his job to Jim Plunkett and won the NFL super bowl 🏈 it really was LOS ANGELES not oakland.
