The 1981 Australian Endurance Championship was a CAMS sanctioned motor racing title for car manufacturers, contested with Group C Touring Cars. It was the 11th circuit racing manufacturers' championship title to be awarded by CAMS and the first to carry the Australian Endurance Championship name.[1]

Although the drivers' weren't credited with points, they were given points for the manufacturer of the car they were driving. Largely through the efforts of Peter Williamson and Graeme Bailey driving their Celica's to a Class C (1601 to 2000cc) win at each of the four rounds, Toyota were the winners of the Endurance Championship with a maximum of 36 points scored, from Ford in second with 27, and a three way tie for third between Holden, Mazda and Mitsubishi who totaled 24 points.

I was around in those days as a flaggy. It's a real shock to see and hear how primitive the broadcasts were in those days. I even question whether some of the commentators like John Smales really had a mechanical clue about race cars judging by their comments. Good time in 2020 to relive those days again.

This is an enjoyable race. It was quite evident, that Australian motor racing struggled with depth, especially as Ford stopped supporting the sport. Thank god Holden was able and keen enough to continue. But as a young boy at the time, and seeing Brock win just about everything, it became a bit monotonous. We are lucky to have the likes of privateers like Bartlett and Johnston, and lesser efforts of Bob Morris to make make it more interesting. It's a shame we didn't have the depth as per the Supercar Series years later, during this particular period. With many two car teams in abundance in the Supercar Series, to really give the spectators some thrills. But that said, it's was still a great period of Australian motor racing history.

Holden pretty much stopped supporting as well, the MHDT had to convince the individual dealers to support the team, because the bean counters at GM wouldn't allow any support of motorsport

could anyone please tell me how's the points system work?
@johnbrooks9523
@johnbrooks9523 Месяц назад
Nope. There were at least different classes based on engine capacity & apparently, winning your class netted 9 points in the sub 3 litre class. Only someone very keen or involved at the time would know.

Adelaide International Raceway. I have no idea if it still exists or not

@@timjohnun4297 it's still there but hasn't been used for any form of circuit racing in decades. A rotting hulk, much like Calder.
