We drive a Pennsylvanian built Hahn fire truck. You can also call it a pumper truck, or Fire Engine. It's the one that shoots water, as opposed to the ones with the big ladder on them (that sometimes shoot water too).

Kids love fire engines because they're sensory overload- they're bright red and huge and lights and sirens and bells and they scream past you at what seems like 100mph and ladders and hoses and every square inch is buttons and gauges and levers and hatches full of axes and stuff. Plus fire is exciting, and the 'hero' factor. I mean kids are impressed by normal trucks, but a fire engine is like a normal truck, but with ADHD and tourettes. Shit is he most spectacular thing an average 6yo sees.

nowadays a pumper with a turbo compound six could do 100. hey! we went from an average of 370hp to north of 400, if not 500. and that's before we talk torque. yeah, i see why i liked firetrucks. huge, loud, fast, hero trucks that saved the day.

I used to like tractors when I was a child for similar reasons. They're big, weirdly shaped, massive chunky tyres, loud clacky diesel engines, and they bounce along the road in quite a comical fashion.

"Best part of someone's worst day." God fucking damnit you're dead on the money. It was 10-11 at night, quiet neighborhood, Im pounding on my neighbor's door trying to get help while my mom is performing CPR on my dad in the bathroom, and you see a truck roll down the street, really bright LED lights engaged. 5-6 men, real men, 6,5' each come out and get right to work, getting my dad stablized to the point that the ambulance (another godsend) could get him to Renown in a hurry. "Best part of someone's worst day." I now want to cry remembering that night, and how nice the fire fighters were. They probably saved my dad's life, and for that I am infinetly grateful to the Reno Fire Department for being on it. I still get anxious whenever I see any kind of first responder vehicle charging down Sun Valley Boulevard.

I always get a kick out of RCR's reviews, yet this hit me the deepest on a personal level. My father recently retired as a firefighter/EMT up in Washington for 34 years. That last line, "The best part of someone's worst day." is the single most accurate statement about seeing one of these. Hearing the sirens come closer and closer when your life is in danger is sometimes the only glimmer of hope you can have. He looked at it as a normal job, much in the way I look at my career in the Air Force, but to the people he arrives to, regardless of who they are - race, creed, age or gender, an engine company will always be a welcomed presence. To me, my father was a hero, but I can't imagine what the sight of this screaming titan of a vehicle means to someone whose loved one or their own life has been saved by one. To those in the fire service, thank you.

If cars would have had alarms then, it would have set them off for sure. Most Detroit Diesel powered fire engines would later have Allison automatics.

I work for detroit and see those old motors from time to time. The 72 in 8v72 means 72cc per cyl. Fun fact, they were also designed for power gen. With a special housing at the front and rear you could connect as many of these engines from front to back as you want. Wanna V64? No problem! Just slap 8 of those engines together.

Now to explain how a 2 cycle Detroit Diesel actually works, because some truckers out there will claim up and down that 2 cycle Diesels don't exist. The piston scavenges air from outside the engine through a turbo or supercharger, that's mounted right on the side of the block. Piston goes up to compress air and ignite the fuel when it's injected inside, then the piston goes back down again to let in more fresh air and exhaust a little, while the exhaust valves are open as well. Exhaust valves close, air is compressed once more and diesel fuel is ignited once injected. This simplifies the valve train, allowing for 4 exhaust valves to allow high exhaust pressure volume to drive the turbos if necessary.
@MidnightMechanic
@MidnightMechanic 6 лет назад
And no, it doesn't run on 2 cycle oil, it's got an oil sump and pump just like anything else.
@wharris302
@wharris302 6 лет назад
why wouldn't people think 2 stroke diesels don't exists most old American trucks and buses used Detroit engines because they were so reliable
@MidnightMechanic
@MidnightMechanic 6 лет назад
Because some truckers have so much pride not to give GM any credibility that they could make anything good at all, let alone a Diesel, and or several of their trucker "buddies" told them that 2 cycles don't exist, completely ignoring any evidence opposing.
@aserta

I had this exact same fire truck as a toy when I was a kid. It was HUGE, like 30 cm long and 10 cm wide. It had a "remote control" hooked to it by a very short cable, but hey you could drive the truck, use the siren and honk. The attention to detail on in was absolutely amazing, every single knob, lever and gauge you see at 2:25 was on it. Easily one of the coolest toys I ever had.

I retired from firefighting in 2004. Fire apparatus have definitely improved a lot from 1982. Now they have fully enclosed cabs, sound and heat insulation, air conditioning, head phones with intercom, automatic transmissions, even computer controlled pumps with built in air-foam fire suppression systems. All of these and many more improvements make firefighting safer and more effective. But modern apparatus come at a price, a new pumper fully equipped, in 2004 would be close to $400,000. Yes that sounds like a lot but remember the manufacturers aren't knocking out tens of thousands of units every year like Detroit, more like a few hundred custom built, hand made vehicles, according to the customers specifications. Also remember a fire truck that's well maintained might last 15 to 20 or more years. Not a bad investment. Writing all this has brought back fond memories of one of the first pumpers that I drove. It was a brand new 1973 Mack with inline 6 cylinder diesel and 5 speed transmission. It had a 1,250 GPM pump, it could really move the water, carry a ton of gear and climb any hill in town. What a wonderful time it was.

I remember on the truck we had there was the manufactures name with a rooster head on it, I found it on the video at the 1 minute mark, bottom left of the rear tailboard. No air in those trucks except the open window and the heat was pitiful in the winter. You had to stand in the exhaust to get warm at a fire in the winter if it was a surround and drown.

When was in elementary school my sister dated a fireman, not together now but they have kid and her first kid calls him dad, and we’d visit him at the station and hang out with him and all the other firemen. Have lunch with all of them and played the first Blacks Ops with them bc we owned it and they wanted to try it. Showed us their gear from helmets to the thermal imagers. Then we got to experience what everyone wants to no matter the age. We rode in the cab of a fire truck not once but twice. And it’s no joke about how loud they are. Everyone was wearing big headphones with built in microphones and you can feel the bumps in the roads. They even threw on the sirens. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world.

In my hometown (Sharonville Ohio, yes the ford transmission plant Sharonville) We have a tradition called touch a truck, where a fire engine, ambulance, cop car, plow truck, city bus and basically a representative of every vehicle in the city's fleet goes to the community center for kids and family to check them out. I love it.

Planag7 tons of old Detroit diesels were two strokes, busses, firetrucks, rock trucks, generators etc all used them. They were super reliable, many still in use today. There's also lots of videos on RU-vid about them, a few guys with big rat rod builds with Detroit 2 strokes in them too. They have a pretty distinct and awesome sound to them too that wasn't really captured here.

billy mccabe Very interesting. I don't think I have been around these kinds of engines before, but I recall most fire trucks I used to be around had distinct sounds. (Was a EMT, though in the mid 2000s)
@mcearl8073
@mcearl8073 6 лет назад
Planag7 yea I never knew it was a thing until a few months ago there was a video posted of the best sounding 2 strokes of all time then I did some research after. It is a distinct sound but I never would have thought they were 2 strokes. Also interesting is they don't have intake valves and even though Mr regular said it was NA they all have blowers to create positive pressure. Some also have turbos though so a regular one could be considered naturally aspirated even if it technically isn't.

I was an Engineer at a company with Hahn Fire Trucks, our's were 671N's( straight 6) attached to allison 6 sp auto. There is nothing more satisfying than driving one of these well. Hahn's were well constructed, BUT.. you have to spend an hour a month tightening the several thousand #2 phillips screws all over the truck. With a fairly simple set of tools , you can disassemble most of the external parts of the truck. Side note: Most Hahn fire trucks came with Hale pumps (these were on Transfer cases NOT PTO's) . Hale used to be based in Conshohocken PA, about 2 hours from Hamburg

Old fire apparatuses are the best fire apparatuses. Was a firefighter years ago and my department spent stupid amounts of money purchasing a Pierce telesquirt and an engine. We already had a bunch of other Pierce equipment. But we had this ancient Mack C-series engine that lived primarily at the college being beat up on by people taking fire classes. Those Pierces were comfy, had awesome AC, could get out of their own way, and you could hear other people talk in the cab. The old Mack was an open cab that was slow, REALLY LOUD, no AC. But those new trucks broke down CONSTANTLY. One would always go out of service... so we would drive out to the college and pick up the old Mack. Never broke down once.

I used to work for freightliner, from time to time a fire truck would come in and I would always make damn sure I was the one working on them. During my years at freightliner the fire trucks are my only fond memories. They are a absolute blast to drive and when the cab is up to work on the engine it looks like the fire truck is ashamed of it's self with it's head down.
@TheDallas62
@TheDallas62 6 лет назад
I don't know why, but there really isn't anything more majestic you can see in a city than a firetruck responding to emergency. That shiny piece of metal blaring it's sirens while going ever so gently ( I mean it's never really fast) and the whole situation just oozing the manliest imagination of heroism with firefighters getting ready on the way, you know: fastening their uniforms and helmets, double checking their gear as they go. It just says whatever hell broke loose somewhere we're getting there! And when we're there we're going to make all go away, because that's what we do. Firefighters and their trucks are like everyday version of Avengers or Justice League

I used to go on ride alongs with my dad. He was a captain of a quint ladder truck. Let me tell you this thing was MASSIVE. It was built in 2015 under a $2,000,000 budget including all the gear like the jaws of life. All the seats have a hole in the back for the oxygen tanks so it wasn't the most comfortable. The interior was probably big enough to fit a small car comfortably. Since it's modern it wasn't too loud while riding around even with the sirens.
