Phantom Regiment's 1983 closing tune was a full-blown five-and-a-half minute production of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." A large concert bass drum was employed to deliver the cannon shots in the finale, with the church bell ringing away and the entire color guard spinning rifles up front in a form sort of like a bell clapper. The horns, in the back, formed the dome of a massive bell and then unleashed every ounce of power still remaining on the final chords. Read more: www.dci.org/news/spotlight-of...

It was a long streamer that was weighted at the tip with a small rock. The other end was tied to the bottom of our pockets.

YIKES!! Bass 6... I mean.. HOLY CRAP THAT THING IS HUGE!! If you pause at 3:06, you can see the edge of his drum is on the yardline and the drummer himself is SPLITTING the yardlines! How big WAS that beast? And I can only imagine the back troubles that poor bastard must be still suffering to this day!

Is the finale tossing of the streamers the reason why fans used to throw streamers when phantom closed out their shows? I always wondered and now I may see why. This was great!

Soapbox rant: this composition is about the Russians defeating Napoleon at the battle of Borodino. This has nothing to do with American history, much less a patriotic song for the 4th of July.

@Wells306 And KFC has nothing to do with Christmas, but all of Japan eats the stuff every Christmas. Sometimes traditions are just born, and, bizarre as they are, they stick. And Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops, way back in 1974, decided to use this piece because it would be impressive with the fireworks going off at the end. And a tradition was born. Relax; keep your undershirt on.
