My retrofit hack of a 1983 RCA rear projection tv with modern Sony LCD HD rear projection internals. The original front panel buttons work, and speakers.
Man...what a beauty. I'm converting a section of my attic room into an 80s room. Can't wait to enjoy all the old movies on VHS again. Or the Pong console, Atari 2600 etc. No internet, no cell phone in this room. I've got to go back in time.
@@user-zx8de8op9l I had one back then. But I almost completely lost interest in games. I don't even like the new ones anymore. A console for some short fun with another person should be enough. But I already bought a huge rear projection TV and 300 VHS tapes and I love watching them on this TV.
This is absolutely fantastic, well done! I love the look of this TV...this is the boxy square type projection TV I wanted as a kid, and yours has the best of both worlds now.
*Incredible! Thank you for showing me what's possible!* *You know, it was only 3 weeks ago when I wasn't even aware of what a rear projection TV was* 😅 *I was actually in the market for a CRT to play retro games when I found a beautiful 1981 45" Panasonic CinemaVision TC-4500 (or CT-4500. I'm not sure). It's in great shape but like you've described, didn't look the best, even after cleaning.* *THIS is what I'd like to do with mine.*
looks just gorgeous!! these absolute behemoths just have a charm to them that i absolutely adore lol. wish i had enough room to fit one of these sets in my home.
I've always wondered what one of those cheap projectors with a native 480p resolution would look like in an old cabinet like this. Watching DVDs in their 480p native resolution should look really good.
Beautiful i appreciate it 👍id fancy such a setup in my home in india also i never knew projection tvs existed in the 80s i thought they were 2000s era thing glad to see your video it felt good
I would absolutely love a retro home bar,, with a fancy hifi system.. I've long wondered how I would get a retro tv in there, which would look the part of 20th century luxury.. But with modern convenience.. This would solve all my problems.. an amazing idea!
Amazing modification, man. You're very lucky. I'd kill for this set to play my laserdiscs and Snes games.... At this point I'm thinking of buying a 4:3 arcade ips display because square rear projection sets like this are gone the way of the dinosaur in my country,, you never see them pop up.
@@jacobcole7644I got them from Video Display Cooperation (VDC) if I remember it right. But since they are no longer made you must be lucky to get a set of new ones these days. If you really intend to replace them you should always be searching when a set comes up as new old stock. A good source is old TV repair shop liquidations. But they are getting scarce too... Another good source for obsolete parts is Qservice Electronics.
@@jacobcole7644 Seems my comment got lost....here again: I got them from VDC Video Display Cooperation as new old stock. Q Service is also a good source for CRT parts as well as TV repair shop liquidations. But if you plan to replace you should keep looking since they are no longer produced and will only come up every couple of months (years maybe).
Very cool....I absolutely love the way these old tvs look. They are pleasing to look at in my opinion...they definitely add character to a room. Modern tvs are too boring in my opinion. Great picture but boring.
holy smokes! this is gorgeous. i'm not a fan of LCD Projectors tbh, but this is the exception. the outter hull is a masterpiece to behold, and to see a non-washed out image on it is doing it justice. i only had a few bad experiences with LCD projectors (flickering pixels, also the blue constantly dying due to overheating.. could have been a bad resistor somewhere, I just gave up). image quality was also a bit wonky, it was jagged compared to a smoother DLP... although, I can see a benefit to the jag. Play NES on it!!! :D
Awesome. I have a question did you restore your LD player? If so do you know anyplace that specializes in laserdisc replacement parts? I have a Pioneer CLD D504 that I bought new back in 95. It definitely needs some repairs. My picture looks horrible. I am hoping it just the laser that needs to be replaced.
Can I install a new front projector (as cheap as possible cost) in my old 60" diag. Hitachi RPTV. Will any type of projector work by projecting directly onto the Fresnel lens screen from the rear? (after gutting old CRT guns) I was considering making a wine bar / storage out of it but It would be cool to have an image on front.
@@ChadBoughton it was a crt projector too but i used a dlp projecter it was a toshiba 720 1080i 50inch. the pioneer tv was already 16x9 65inch /so i put the toshibe inside it with the toshiba fresnel lens outta it. where the old crt projecter was i installed my av reciever and my vcr dvd combo. alll in all looks great sounds awesome i wanna hook up the buttons how did you do it? that movis in 16x9 you should use the zoom so you dont get the black bars
I would LOVE to squeeze a nice new oled screen inside one of these. Think that'd be possible? Anyways for my 4:3 applications I prefer CRT but that's just me. However, this set is a work of art. It should not be forgotten. Nice mods!
If you do have a Sony KDS46A2000 HDTV, you have a SXRD set. The have great picture quality but they are known to be plagued with green blob issues. It was so bad, many customers filled a class action lawsuit with Sony.
