I agree. Every brand had their Suntour, SR/Sugino, DiaCompe equipped bicycles. They did well.

I had a '76 Raleigh Pro with Clement Del Mondos. Those tires spoiled me for life! I rode that bike into the ground, but the glorious tires were like a magic carpet ride and I could usually catch up on descents after getting dropped on a climb in races. I also rode those silk tires off road, long before mtbs existed.

I sold Raleigh back in the Technium days. It was a little harder sell when all these lighter aluminum bikes came out. But the Technium rode well. We sold a bunch.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage I believe mine to be a 1986. 6061-T8 aluminum main frame tubes with steel head tube, seat stays, chain stays and steel fork (3x6 Shimano 600 group). Certainly not a high end bike but it fit me like a glove and it holds a special place it my heart. Keep up the great content 👍

Im an idiot. I keep forgetting to get a new magnet! Take a second for a story. I had a damaged 73 International I sent to a painter. He repaired the frame, this is in 1985. He painted it black for me. He said he had international decals but when he finished the bicycle he called and said that they were damaged. But he had Super Course decals....long story short. I had the only Raleigh Inter Course.. Not joking. I cant find a pic if it. If I do Ill put it on the channel.

Hey Dale. Great catch on the end caps! I only put them on temporarily. I prefer the plug type. I just didnt have any. Bruce has become a friend. Known him since I worked in a shop in the 80s. Then I was his Wisconsin cycle/Riteway/GT Schwinn rep for 10 years. I live in town and now we hang out. Thanks for the encouragement.

Its a shame about Suntour. People dont know that they had the first index system that worked incredibly. Miyata put it on a 300 bike. But nobody took it seriously. I'll have to find what model that was.

Patents. The story goes that Suntour didn't think to protect all of their inventions/innovations. Shimano came along as the bigger more established brand (they were already big in fishing) and patented many of them. It was a shame Suntour never recovered.

The first Suntour I ever saw was a "Skitter" on a cheap Japanese 5 speed Sting Ray knockoff around 1966.

@@nowyourefinished6481 Nope they did. The patents ran out in 85 shockingly everyone else copied the second they were out. Shimano needed that design for reliable pull ratios for sis and sti to work. Shimano made copies of campy until that patent ran out in 85. Suntour was the best hands down in the friction era for half the price.

That explains why a Dura ace rear derailer looks so much like the sun tour featured in this video

Thats pretty cool.. I have a question. It's going to sound negative. It's not meant to be. Please understand.. Im curious. Why is it whenever someone converts to 650B. They always put that in the description of the bicycle? Just a trend I notice when people tell me about their bikes. As if they are passionate about their conversions. I'll be careful with the decals.!

I hear ya John! The Portage came as a 650b touring bike! It’s probably the first ‘mass produced’ 650b in the US market (Raleigh also had their Mountain Tour ATBs at that time, one with 650b wheels). Raleigh produced the Portage’84-‘86 or ‘87. The ‘84 had shorter chain stays than later years. It can fit 38c and even 42c sort of. Came with front and rear racks and the saddle even came with a dual-ended hex wrench (5/6mm) mounted underneath for adjusting on the go! It’s a quite fun bike to ride! I’ll send some pics.

That's only because Campy was the name to have. SunTour parts were far better designed and of higher quality. Campy sat on their laurels until the 90's when they finally woke up. Now their stuff is exceptional.

Thanks. I still believe that Campagnolo had better quality bearings, races, harder aluminums etc. I just think that Suntour shifted better in that era. I think that Shimano really did damage to Campagnolo when the DuraAce 7400 Group came out. Campy has never recovered from that.

Its inconclusive as to who made it. Raleigh in those years were marketed by Huffy and would mimic the Reynolds decals. Some think it was Tange tubing but I'm still not sure even after some research.

I don't enjoy rebuilding free wheels. I do it once in a while. You had a great idea with the brown leather. Just trying to keep the cost down. I have not done a great job with stitched leather in the past. I'm a little nervous doing it.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage I fully get that. Freewheels are a right pain. I did mine because it was glitchy, and I found a pawl was hung and not engaging. It works perfectly now, but the rebuild was NOT fun.

Hey, Those were pretty standard back in the early to mid 80s. You need the special "Aero" levers to run the cables like that. Just go to Ebay and punch in "Aero DiaCompe Levers"

I worked in a shop in the 80s and I worked for GT bicycles all through the 90s. I believe Shimano Dura Ace 7400 destroyed Campagnolo and they never really recovered. Its unfortunate. I do have a 2016 Athena group and it works amazingly on my Chitalian Masi. I do not have any Nivex style derailleurs. I pretty much collect 70s and 80s. Thanks for watching.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage It took several years for Campy and SunTour to catch up with the indexing. Sun Tour was wrecked by poor business decisions, but Shimano didn't help! Campy still survives somehow. We don't see them often in N Wackofornia shops though. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year we see modern Campy bikes roll thru our service shop. I really dig 8-10 speed Campy using their wonderfully simple brifters. They're easily rebuildable. My shop owner friend had an awesome Record OR custom mtb. Collections are one thing. Grinding and beating this stuff down is awfully silly. Besides pictures in mags that was the only Campy mtb I've ever seen. I recently overhauled an older aluminum Santa Cruz Stigmata 'cross rig with Campy Chorus and Athena and Campy cantis. A really neat rig, but you'd need to be rich or sponsored to race Campy on a nasty 'cross course! I'm looking for a lightly used Chorus, 600 or 7400 gruppo to put on my Eisentraut. It will be offroaded at some point. Underbiking has always been my style and I can't resist an explore. Whatever I get, I already have some NOS C Record levers to put on there if I don't get some Campy brifters. Campy makes my favorite shaped brake lever. An Eisentraut was my high school dream bike in the '70s that I never thought I could never afford. I got to borrow one for a long 300 mile weekend ride in the '70s. This ride was like a magic carpet! Spoiled me for life. The Rainbow Traut at our local shop probably rusted out from all my drool! Decades later, after racing and owning several custom made bikes, one of my favorite customers at my shop handed me this dusty old rattlecanned but beautifully lugged frame. He refused a penny for it. I took him out for drinks but his friend there payed our tab! Eisentraut had sort of slipped my mind nearly 50 years later. There was a cursive E cast into the BB shell. It was Italian threaded, so I assumed it wasnt an Eisentraut. But I needed Campy frame tools to get it prepped. I took it to my friend who has quite a collection of pre '80s bikes. He took one look at it, smiles at me and said "You scored, it's a Traut!!" My patience truly paid off....

Yes. the negative thing about that Era is that brands were not making their OWN bikes. They farmed them out. Curious. Do you know who Huffy contracted with to build it? Was it Panasonic?

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage I know the 81-83 ailez specialized were 3rensho. They were full campy and tange tubesets they were far from bargin priced. They were more like the 3rensho athlete models their entry level still crazy high quality. I doubt Panasonic would cut into the already good USA market at the time. By the way you can still order from Panasonic frames today using the pos system of the old days easy you just have to use a Japanese shop online. I ordered a cx frame in Panasonic team paint scheme a few years back. Not expensive at all really. Had it in like three months. Considering the only frame maker of the era in Japan with tube making abilities was Miyata it could be them but they were in bed with koga at the time. I doubt they could have handled all that work. All I can tell you is tange is on some of the fork steer tubes no idea on the rest of the tube set. Whoever it was they built tons of bikes for Raleigh USA

That's a great question! When did Superbe first come out???? I did a lot of repairs and bike builds backin the 80s.. I don't think it came out earlier than 80? Im not sure. I may have to take to google to find out. You wouldn't recognize downtown Arlington Hts. Check out google maps. Alot of high rise condos downtown. My friend John purchased Winklemens Schwinn that was in town there.. That was 40 years ago..

The Schwinn Paramount was made by Schwinn. In the late 80s they started to market some bikes under the Paramount name called PDG. Paramount Design group. the hierchy? Meaning best down to the least? Depends on the year. You can google old catalogs and that will spell it out. They added and subtracted so many bikes that it would be hard to tell ya..

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage it is indexed. i am pretty sure it is a shimano 600 sl-6208 6 speed shifter. I now already bought a sl-6400 and hope its gonna work. Its my first bike restoration. Fingers crossed :D

Yes. My intention was to take this video further into the rhelm of why all these Asian bikes existed and how companies were not making their own bicycles anymore. When I was done I felt it was too negative so I edited it all out. Coming soon I'll do a video about why imports became a huge part of the bike industry.
