In this video we complete the assembly of the 77 Colnago Super. We go out and get the rims, we build the wheels and assemble the entire bicycle. It turned out excellent.
It's come to my attention that This is a 1977 or even a 76 model. Mostly due to just a couple characteristics of the frame. One is It doesn't have the recessed brake bolts. Second is possibly color. What say you?

I’ve replaced many spokes and trued up many wheels. Someday I’ll get the nerve/confidence to lace an entire wheel. That was cool watching you do that. Also, the yellow vintage bar tape looks perfect on the Colnago. 😎👍

I miss the days of Cello tape - wish there was a modern alternative. When I worked in a shop '82-'85 Cello tape was $1.50 so you could change colors on a whim. When I built up my first Italian (De Rosa) in 1992 I used white Cello; still readily available then.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 6 месяцев назад
@@ericsande5345 exactly, I worked in the shop from 82 to 89 and then I was a supplier with GT bicycles. The benotto tape was so cheap! Then you would put the Lycra seat cover to match the tape! It would change the whole look of the bike.

20 + years bike service dept experience here and you are always spot on with your builds and tool useage Good job !!! Personally I run the rear brake cable housing on the left side of the stem and the front brake housing on the right side of the stem both on top of the bars . The crisscross I find pleasant to the eye

YOu'll think I'm odd. I run them usually IN FRONT of the bar. I just like them out of the way. It was also the Schwinn Service School way in the 80s. Thats why you saw a bit of humor from me when I showed the routing. Thanks for watching

GEE-PEE-EMMAY - like GPM - Gran Premio Montagna...like King of the Mountain. I was the guy who quoted CAMPAGNOLO's instructions for lever placement - if you don't want to follow 'em, that's on you though you could always do what I do - rotate the bar in the stem just a bit to have the levers in the right place on the bar AND the right place under your hands. Win-win! Otherwise, very nice-looking project - BRAVO!
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the GPM. Yeah. you and one other had mentioned the lever position. I can see if you're talking to a newbie that guidance is warranted. Im sure in the comment section its a good thing for those reading the comments. Having 25 Full campy bikes, most of which have a 64 Cinelli bar you'd have to admit that the right way is the way the rider wants it.. Right?

Lovely Colnago. I always liked the Benotto bar tape in bright pink and wrapped as you do from middle to end. That way it stayed put without needing adhesive tape (which you can add as a finishing touch if you like).

Hi John, I had always wrapped tape from the end of the bar to the middle. So next time, I'll try that reverse method ... seems just as practical wrt to pushing 'down' on the wrap direction, plus it might eliminate the need for tape at the end (the middle). Good stuff! Tony (CR member).

Actually, I don't know if I recommend that. I would say if you're using the plastic tape or cloth tape. You can do that. But if you're using the newest vinyl padded stuff, I would still go from the bottom up.

Looking at the block cassette reminded me of the gearing on my Shogun Samurai from many years ago. It had a seven speed 12-21cassette and was paired with 52-42 chainrings. I think a series on a full restoration how to Including lacing wheels and full set up from an average bike to a good working bike would be cool! I can only imagine how long it would take to put a series like that together however some of us watching and at the stage of life am at where the only affordable vintage bikes can get hands on are a little more beat up than the ones you tend to find, it would be inspirational to see a full transformation of something a bit more beaten.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the suggestion. There are so many channels that do that. I'm not that inspired to paint a bicycle. I wish I was. Those channels do so much better than mine. I am going to do a Schwinn Superior from 1978 in the future. Its not beat, but its just a Mid level Schwinn that was made in Chicago. However I am probably going to get that professionally painted. I'll probably do that in Two videos because it would include a trip to the artist painting and decaling it. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching. Plus, Check out my latest.. Not a big restoration but it is a more (reachable) bicycle. Thanks!

Great video and very nice Colnago! As far as the bar tape, I always like to use a color that matches the decals or secondary color, such as on the head tube or striping. I have a bright pearl green Allegro with red bar tape. Sounds weird, but it works with the fades and pinstriping. Also I use (steal) my wife's hairspray to install brake lever hoods. They slide right on when you're fast enough before it dries, then helps to keep them put. Thanks for the video!
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 6 месяцев назад

Handlebar tape should only ever be black. Wolber 58 Super Champions rims were my favorites. Built dozens and dozens of those up into touring wheels back in the day, like us old guys say. Closest to those now are one of the offerings from Velo Orange. Suntour Superbe Pro gives the Campagnolo Record brakes some competition for being the prettiest brake. Have a set on one of my bikes and they still make me smile.

John, I've been following your journey related to this bike. I have mixed feelings about the frame color, but it is a really nice bike. Nice rims, and it's fortunate decals are still there. Where would you go for replica decals now that VeloCals has ceased operations? Ah yes, square-taper BB, the only BB designed by the angels. For the Raleigh, get a brown suede Selle Italia Turbo saddle and use brown leather bar tape or brown leather sew-on grips.If the seat color is too light, you can darken with a judicious application of whatever suede conditioner you like.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage spoke washer usage is rather rare now. Using them makes the J bend fit tighter in the flange hole if you are building with 15-gauge spokes, or if your flange thickness is undersize.

Those brakes are backwards compared to the side-pull brakes that I have (I have two different models of them made by Dia-Compe). With mine, the brake cable attaches on the left side of the front brake and the right side of the rear brake, which makes sense, at least for the US market (I don't know about other countries), because the de facto standard here is to have the front brake lever on the left and the rear brake lever on the right. Before I saw this video I didn't even know anyone made side-pull brakes that were the other way around. Which configuration is more common?

Interesting! These are Campagnolo brakes. I believe they made them only one way and made teh same way for decades back then. You raise a good question.

Don't you have a Peanut Butter wrench? I like using the nylon washers (Minute 12-14) rather than the steel Campagnolo. That would have been great in the olden days. Oh, well. The Super Record that I had (70s') had cut outs on the chain guide. Looks like a Nuovo Record front. But, they worked as well and just a few grams heavier. I used to build a lot of wheels when I wrenched in Carbondale (70s) 30 minutes or less. Now I take my time 2 hours plus, great for chilling. Support your local shops. You can't learn everything off of videos and the mail order can't help you. My folks (Trek Atlanta) helped me lace hidden cables in my Bianchi, run BB tap, derailleur hangers and everything else that I don't have the tools or eyesight for. 😞Your LBS prices are real close on-line (shipping, handling) and consider that you employ folks and taxes support your communities.

Hi, enlighten me. what is a PB wrench? I can usually get a rim laced in 8 minutes. pulling it up between 20 and 40 minutes depending on the condition of the rim and the accuracy of the spoke length. Thanks for watching.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage A peanut butter wrench is the 15 mm Campagnolo crank spanner, also used on track bike wheel bolts. As far as I remember, the peanut butter wrench term came from Turin Coop. Mechanics would use the end to scoop out Skippy to load on their crackers. It's in the mini and maxi Campagnolo mechanics box. I wish I had one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_butter_wrench

I have a better way to put the hood on, I use plain baby powder and going just a little slower over the sharp edges.

Baby powder?? Interesting. Never tried it. Does it ever lose its slipperiness?

You will be using only a dusting of powder. Have be doing this way for 45 years with no rips or tears and they stay put when on. David
