In late 80’s built a Vitus 979 with first generation C Record. Certainly the prettiest group set ever made…however the earlier Nuovo Record remains my most nostalgic times!( from my road racing 1970’s). Never seen this gold anodising before now. Stunning. Thank you

I agree. The vintage NR or SR is more iconic. I always considered the C-Record to be a "fashion" group.

Great video and great bike. Gardin was a Italian born, Toronto bike guy, a bit of a recap here if you're interested along with a bike with similar coloured Campy parts. You can see a post about Gardin here at a Toronto bike store, called mariposabicycles, can't direct link so you'll have to google it. My first and only road bike was a Gardin Ultima which is sitting in my basement after I had a derailleur incident bending the hanger. Always wanted to rebuild it but no money or time.

The higher the quality bearing races can be adjusted too tight by the smooth adjustment procedure . I find adjusting them till side play is gone to be better especially in ball bearing headsets. Try it both ways to find the sweet spot. 54 yrs experience racing and multiple years working in high end bike shops I learned many lessons. Some easy some the hard way .

I used to work in an electroplating shop. That coloration could be any number of things. They could have antiqued that part, which doesn't seem likely because it wouldn't be consistent with the rest of the plating. It could be that the gold finish came off, because certain plates, like gold and silver, and incredibly thin. They're only cosmetic, so they only spend a few moments to minutes in the gold bath. The highest content of a gold bath is 23k. It could be as simple as oxidation. You might wonder if it is oxidation, then why not the other plated parts? That could also be a couple things. They might not have adequately activated the base metal when going through the plating process. Almost everything gold or silver plated has first been nickel plated or nickel activated. You have to mess with the atoms in metal to make it more conductive etc, because plating is all about chemistry and electricity. You have to prepare the base metal to be plated. Another possibility is that the base metal might be leeching through the plating, then reacting with the plating and air, turning it black or a different color. The gold plating is so thinly applied that it could have also basically fallen off, and what you're seeing is the nickel, or nickel activation, oxidizing. Really, there isn't too much you can do about it. You can polish it, but be very careful. You can't ruin the base metal, but it would be easy to polish off the microns of gold plate.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 7 месяцев назад
Wow, thanks for all the info. I don't rub any of it hard because it seems that the finish is pretty weak. I cleaned the fork with water and a microfiber. Thanks for watching!
@tappan8808
@tappan8808 7 месяцев назад
@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage Gold, silver, and probably copper these days with the price of metals, are all just cosmetic finishes. They used to lay it on thick with copper, but I doubt it these days. There's barely anything there on your bike parts. Jewelry and heirlooms would get a little more, but still, it wasn't much. When they would deliver the gold salts to replenish the baths, it would come in an armored Brinks truck with guards. Tens of thousands of dollars to bring the gold baths up to content. So yes, a little water and very light rubbing to clean is a good idea. I can remember a story about the mafia stealing gold bath salts (it really does look like table salt) and then refining the gold out of it. Again, all chemistry. It's all done in a factory setting, but electroplating is fascinating stuff.

Used to work for a guy who was a wizard at setting up Delta brakes but it was one of the (few) things he never taught me. Great video and a fabulous bike! In regards to the modolo stem, I believe the issue was with the Professional model. Measure the width of the stem near the underside clamping bolt, use a caliper, the ones that were recalled (IIRC) were narrow maybe 5/8” or 3/4” and the ther should be a ridge or spine running down the underside of the stem. The replacements the width is closer to 1-1/8” and no ridge (they filled in alongside the ridge to increase thickness and strength. I always loved those stems bc they were so good looking, but, they are heavy as hell (at least the replacements were. On the shifter, make sure the synchro gear is properly placed, I don’t remember if those derailleurs had a B screw adjustment, if not that’s what those axle alignment screws are for Finally you did a really nice job setting up the delta brakes! I struggled like hell the first time. At some point (there were several generations of the Deltas) Campagnolo offered a guide hook that fit on the seat binder bolt over the center of the seat tube so that the brake cable entered the top of the brake vertically instead of at a bit of an angle.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 7 месяцев назад
I've done a lot of what you suggest. That's why Im waving the white flag LOL. Im done with it. It's a wall hanger honestly. I think I'll leave the stem alone as well for that reason. If I sell it I'll have to inform them of the stem. Thanks for watching and suggestions!
@shoff535

Hopefully someone will know how to tune the rear derailleur, bc it’s always nice to have everything working well. I agree with you on the stem, I always thought the early professionals were elegant (before they were beefed up)

There were different shifter inserts depending on which freewheel you are using. I had the Croce d'Aune set. I noticed some of the professional riders used that Derailleur with their C Record group. My guess is that the C Record never adapter well to indexing. I used a Shimano freewheel as I figured they were the kings of indexing. You can always run it on friction.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage 7 месяцев назад
That is why I put the challenge out there. Have not been able to get this thing to shift properly. When I work in the shop in the 80s I couldn't get them to work properly either. I'm not that worried about it because it's a wall hanger. If I decide to ride it, I'll just put some friction shifters on it.
@rickjenkins1238
@rickjenkins1238 7 месяцев назад
There might be a friction mode. I think the shifter inserts were color coded to what type of freewheel it worked on.
@armandocastillo4647
@armandocastillo4647 6 месяцев назад
Back in the 80s when these came through the shop I at which I worked (Bud's bike, Claremont California) I found that being careful to use a freewheel with even spacing between the cogs, made specifically for indexing (Shimano) and replacing the upper jockey wheel with a Shimano index shifting does the job. The SIS jockey slides side to side making index work. Shimano had a patent (apparently) and the lack of slide kept SIS well ahead of Campag and Sun Tour.

Hi. I would search out through Google. They have all the old catalogs online. So, it depends on the year. Paramount was always the top of the line. I was going to ask, but then I saw that you glued on Veloflex tubs. I love those C Record hubs. Is there any truth about Campy making their 7 speed, freewheel hubs, with 130mm spacing, instead of 126mm, so that there would keep the rim more central?? I saw something 15 to 20 years ago, that said that. PS. I have a plain C Record rear derailleur, without the indexing adjuster, but with the Campy stamping. I thought that the second generation didn't have the stamping, and just said Campagnolo on it. (but my memory might be failing) PSS. I never worked with Syncro. I have some 8 speed Record shifters (somewhere), that always worked well, but you always had to set them up to fall right into gear, as you went from big cog to small cog, and then you had to overshift and release a little, to get the chain to snap onto the larger cog, from the smaller ones. (a little like friction shifting)
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage

Sometimes with the Voyageur 11.8. The crankset over time begins to collapse. You keep tightening it over the years and the bolt sticks out farther than the crankarm! That means your crankarms are munched. Good luck with that!
