1983 Saddleback AMA 125 250 500 National Motocross 

Magoo is my favorite racer from that era. Not because he was the fastest, or the most talented, or the champion, but because he was the Pete Rose of MX. I used to watch him practice at Argyll Park in Dixon CA, and he put in 100% effort into every session that he rode. Even in between the beers. He broke lots and lots of bikes for a reason- they weren’t built, nor were they ready for, his pace. He literally rode the wheels off his bikes. The man was a savage. When everything clicked, you couldn’t touch him. Remember the MX and Trophy Des Nations? He was on another level. I loved the man. I met him dozens of times, before and after his ‘incident.’ He was always gracious and humble, and he always gave something back to the community. RIP Mr Magoo.

Real racing

I raced bikes, 125, 250 and sometimes my dads 495 from 79-83. I was 13 yrs old in 81. I would read my Dirt Bike, Motocross Action and Cycle News mags all winter long just waiting for my new dirt bike and spring time to arrive and the racing season to start. Loved those days. In 81 I attended the Suzuki School of Motocross and practiced at Carlsbad. Met Chuck Sun and Marty Moates at the track practicing.

Wow, I raced there in 1970, watched Decoster and Roberts and all those guys over the years, I really remember those long up hill starts they were so much fun.

If I had to pick one year of American pro motocross, 1983 was IT! I was 16 and had two YZ125’s that year….it is THE year I think of when I remember my racing hero’s and my personal experiences in the sport. While I raced from 1977 to 1988, I think 1983 was the year that is most special for me. I wish there was more video of the nationals from that time!

These were the guys i grew watching thanks to living clise to a Pantry its kinda like a 7 11 wee would go look at the Dirt Rider and MOTOCROSS MAGAZINES FOR FREE. THEN ID WATCH THESE GUYS IN ESPN. MY FAVORITE WAS WHEN THEY RACED IN LA at the Coliseum and make thst huge jump down the stadium

It would be great to have full coverage of that national with sound. I was actually there.

I was there ! If I remember right that was the "Wheelie Prince" on a TS185 Suzuki doing the Wheelie's. Not Domokos.

Man the bikes look ancient to me a 14 year old

Videos just don't do that track and the pace those guys rode at back then justice, you just can't understand the level those guys rode at unless you were there
