The 80's was the greatest decade ever. I used to race back in 78-82 and had a RM and a YZ 80. Loved the smell of the Castrol oil that mixed with the fuel. Lets not forget the music that came out of the 80's either. What a blessing it was to be a kid in the US during the 80's. Now I look at the world and it seems as if I am on a completely different planet.

My dream is the 77, 78 RM 125 and the ice on top of the cake THIS ONE , all world champs with Watanabe, Rahier and Lackey. I'd fit some DG exhaust on it and wear my old Arai helmet with 5 buttons, yellow shirt, blue Yoko trousers and old bleu Fox boots. It was the best era ever of Motocross, Lackey, Sun and Laporte were the US outsiders, the solid contenders named Vromans, Malherbe, Noyce, Carlqvist, Bruno, Kinigardner, Wolsink and so many in the list...Wow, missed the smell out of a hot muffler !

In my opinion most of the major changes took place in the 80's. Anybody remember the 1981 Suzuki RM 125? You either had that bike or wished you had one.I remember people jumping ship in the middle of the year and halfway through the season you would roll up to the start and 90% of the riders were on the Suzuki. Honda couldn't give their 125 away that year and the Kawasaki was still air cooled.

Yea he is! He definitely cool! And he knows what he is talking about! Out of all the video makers out there, I actually like this guy. The rest of them, say they know, think they know, but when they open their mouth someone who actually does know thinks " what an Idiot" , another one, telling old wives tales and giving bad advise thinking they are educating the world but they are not doing anything but feeding into and spreading narrative driven techniques that are designed to sell products whether you need them or not, will ever need them or not, or if you will ever even need to use them or no. That does not matter, because all that matters to them is that they convince people to buy their product. Like never seize and loc-tite. There is a time and place for them, but these people use one or the other on everything and some use both at the same time. Someone who recommends that you loctite every nut and bolt, has an issue with properly tightening, or pretention Ing the big spring that a bolt or stud actually is. And they have had a problem with things loosening and falling apart after they assemble them, which is why they have to use a thread glue to hold their junk together. And never seize, their are different types with different metals in them for different purposes. Not to them, there is one kind, and that is the kind they have, and it is never seize, it says it is right on the can! Yes they are right, it says never seize, but not anti-corrosion compound, and that is what they are using it for.

My first woody for dirt bikes started around 77-78. I can’t remember exactly which year but I remember it was an RM80 the kid on the street behind our house had. I was 9 and we had just moved to Connecticut from the Bronx and I heard this noise from off in the distance curious I went to go see what it was. Then I saw it. I’ll never forget that as long as I live. I’m 53 and I can still remember the sound it made, and that 500 brought me right back. there.

I had the same bike but 1 year older, I had the 1982 RM 465Z. Bought it brand new in 1982 for $2,495. I also added the same air box, I got it from White Brothers in Cali. Also sent the rear shock to White Brothers and put a terry fork kit on the front. It was a beast, but so fun to ride. I had it for 8 years and sold it in 1990. Ran like a top, started first or second kick every time, and I never had one engine problem with it. Best bike I ever had.

A friend of mine rebuilt one of these sometime in the late 90’s. It was missing the rear shock, but we were twenty (and by that I mean we were stupid), so we decided to try it out anyway. I held the back end up to guesstimate the seat height, while he took measurements for the new “shock”. Cut a piece of steel, couple of mounting bolt holes and we were ready to roll. As far as I know, it was the only hard tail rm 500 in the neighborhood. We took it for a few rips up and down the road and that was enough for both of us. That thing was an absolute beast! Just terrifying. The lack of rear suspension didn’t do much to allay the fears either.

I had a 1984 RM500, tallest bike i ever owned. I think rear suspension travel was like 14.2", one of the best through whoops. These are 4 speeds, torquey.
@mikekopmanis2099
@mikekopmanis2099 Год назад
@@davidcarper5411 No, it was a 4 speed, pretty crazy. But with all that torque it worked. Later had '86 & '91 KX500's and my belief on the '91 is that it would have been faster with a 4 speed.
