Memories... my first bike. Bought new in 84’ paid $1500.00 since it was last years model. I loved that bike.... had many Honda’s and Harley’s since. Still miss your first though.

A near perfect bike indeed power is where you need it when ya need it. Yamaha was right on with this mid size cruiser.

I totally agree. The engine is very smooth from 2000/2500 rpm onwards, with an extra kick above 6000 rpm. My first bike, more than 30 years ago, which I rode for 15 years, was a 920, which was nice as well, but not nearly as smooth and cultivated as the 500. In fact, the 500 is both more sporty, and more cruisery, if that's even a word, then the 920, in my opinion. You can easily chuck along happily in 5th gear from 45 klms onwards. You can open the throttle completely at such low rpms, and it will smoothly and unhesitatingly climb to 8500 rpm. Vibrations are also very low, as is fuel consumption. I get about 23 kms to the litre in mountainous inland Portugal. On the 920 I could barely get 17 kms to the litre, with a very moderate riding style. I absolutely love this bike. The sound, the handling, just the sheer fun of riding it!

Bought one of these new in 84. It was my first "real" bike. Great college bike, and made a great sound.

Hazwaste63 - me too! Do you remember how much you paid back then? I got mine new was $1500.00 I believe- bought it at dealership in Astoria Oregon.

@@flipdifilippo9923 Yes, I got it "on sale" for $1300. I recall that the Honda Shadow 500 was in the low $2000 range, and the Virago seemed too good to be true at the sale price. Turns out that it ended up being a really good bike. BTW, my dad's from Astoria. Beautiful town.

I have one myself, but I'm in the process of redoing alot of it, including repainting, metal flake Orange with Black frame. I like this 500. Not too heavy, and just the right amount of power for me. Nice video Alex. 👍

Adjust idle by removing that YICS chamber that chrome box that says YICS with a 10MM socket. Then underneath that metal bracket you will see a crown shaped screw head that's the adjustment. Adjust to 1200RPM with engine HOT not cold!

Could you use this bike for trips?
@Hazwaste63

I took a lot of trips on mine back in the day. Mostly Austin TX to DFW and back. Did it once during a winter storm. Don't recommend doing that.

I rode mine on two and three day trips… but this isn’t a cruising bike - more of a commuter. If you had to drive it across the country you probably could but not sure how comfortable it would be .
