I bought this album in the late '80s in Manhattan at, I believe, Tower Records. It was partly responsible for starting me on my Elvis journey & began my love of "Kentucky Rain." My favorite Elvis song to this day. As far as "If You Talk In Your Sleep" goes, I'm just glad Felton used horns instead of his usual string section. TCB ⚡
Awesome video! I just pick up this album. I had the CD many years ago. I really like the album. It is my top chill songs of Elvis. I really like to go for a ride in the car and listen to Kentucky Rain, In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds. Those joints right there hit home. Take me to a peace of mind. Dig it Great stuff brother. Have a wonderful night TCB
Great video Ed! I remember when that album came out and it was in the shops, But I didn’t buy it because I already had all the songs, But I loved those songs! I didn’t know it was released on CD, Great video!
Hi Ed, I bought this album today in an antiquarian for 250 CZK, (about 11 $) very good condition. I'm so excited, Elvis is my big passion. I wish I had a collection of Elvis albums like you, Ed. I look forward to your next videos, you do a great. Have a wonderful time, Merry Christmas to you and Your familly. Sorry for my bad English.
The 16 track expanded edition released in 1997 is great, and can now be found in the Classic Albums Gold Records Box set that contains the other four volumes in expanded variants. But for me, even though the sound is excellent, there is still room for improvement on Vol 5 regarding track selection.
Hi Ed I love this album I have on cd:) Great tunes been an Elvis fan long time. Your videos are terrific and enjoying them. Thanks for your posts. Bill
Hey Ed whats up like the video i do have this on Audio Tape & enjoy the selection of Songs but have not seen it on Vinyl lately or cd but your Record like in really good shape , i thought that this series of Elvis Golden Records went on for several more volumes after this but i had mistaken the Elvis Golden Records with Elvis Legendary Performer , the Elvis Legendary Performer actually continued on longer & was later put out thru the Bear Family Music , Elvis Presley Legendary Performer went up in the series at least last i checked to Volume 18 with alternate cuts & all kinds of Goodies on it , really cool Elvis Golden Records Vol. 5 lp can not complain about the songs enjoyed your review take care Rock on Peace
I thought I was the only one that thought that if they had would have used a studio cover with the gold records in the back like the other four it would have been perfect. Surely they could have made one up or they could have called me I would have been glad to help
Wow Ed! I have heard about that album! It has such great songs on it! I love all of them! Great picture on the front! Didn’t know it was released on CD, Great Video Ed! I always love your videos!
I wish they would have put PROMISED LAND on instead of "If You Talk in Your Sleep" :) +++ I also wish they put "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" on this ALbum +++ I have the LP and the CD also :) +++ " The WONDER of YOU" +++ "RAISED ON ROCK" +++ they should of had at least 20 plus songs on this album +++
Thanks for the video Ed and I must say I haven't played this release in quite awhile so this has encouraged me to get it out and give it a spin. The song I most remember being a little different was Burning Love, the drums had a lot of power. Now to the turntable!
Take off Talk in your sleep and for the heart. Add Dont cry daddy, my boy, promised land. Would have been so much better. But I do listen to it and enjoy it.
I have the original album and the Friday Music on blue vinyl. As for the remix, this album contains the full true stereo, "Suspicious Minds", the original single mix of "Kentucky Rain" and possibly the best sounding version of "If I Can Dream". That said, the remixes on Side B are extremely evident and do not exceed their standards, in terms of the original recordings. I will add that the remix of "If You Talk In Your Sleep" is really great.
Nice one ED i have the original pressing cd pressing and the Friday Music pressing on gold vinyl so i love this version a lot now there is another one that has bonus tracks and that version isnt the same has this one has the one you got this time they use the original single mix's but thats ok but i like the original pressing much better cause i am use to it lol great video my friend...
This is an interesting one. All things considered, a Vol 5 should've probably been released around 73. I think that would've been a good release following the Aloha buzz. As far as the song selections go, it's decent, although it could use 2 or 3 more tracks. Promised Land is a glaring omission. The reason to buy this disc IMO is the mix of Kentucky Rain. My favorite version other than the On Stage legacy edition/EAP box set version. Some of the other mixes are good, but some suffer from digital 80s reverb. The Jungle Room tracks boost the vocals but the drums suffer.
I believe that by having more than 10 tracks in the album that RCA would have had to pay more in royalties/fees that’s one of why his albums started to only have 10 tracks on them in the 70s, the other being the lack of material that Elvis was recording.
I always have found the release of this album puzzling. Coming some 16 years after volume 4, it seems like just another superfluous Elvis compilation. If it had been better executed I would probably consider it 'essential' to own like the original four Golden Records albums that preceded it. There are several tracks not here which should have been included as well as some that are and shouldn't have been. The artwork should have borne at least some resemblance to the other LPs in the series. RCA has issued so many unecessary Elvis compilations; this is one of them, although it really shouldn't be.
the words of "IF YOU TALK IN YOUR SLEEP" ruin that song for me , I Like the Horns & violins , strings - in that song :) ... they should have had -T-R-O-U-B-L-E and PROMISED LAND :) +++
Ed funny you mentioned the Horns in if you're talking to sleep I have a funny story to say I played it to a girlfriend back in the day and as soon as it started she said that sounds like 70s porn* music hahaha
Ed I thought this was a great release in fact it's a brilliant release but I was just unhappy with the photo it would have been nice if they could have got a photo from say 69 or like the rehearsal photos from the 68 comeback but not a leather clad Elvis from the 68 comeback these photos have been used too much just like 70s s catsuit so that's why I thought the rehearsal from the 68 comeback where he's wearing that blue type denim suit or whatever or like the British release of Almost in Love I don't know if you know that cover but that's got a brilliant photo that would have been great on this
Cover art should have kept a golden record image. And Elvis in the centre. Dislike the graphic text back then and today. Just got a Japan pressing of Girl Happy. Image was like taken yesterday, it so fantastic.
Yes you are so right. The artwork chosen for GR5 was poor and in my opinion, they should have used studio photos like those used on the singles such as If I Can Dream or In The Ghetto or a photo like the one used on the German Elvis `Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas from The Trouble with Girls.
Overall, good album. If I Can Dream on this release sounded terrible, in my opinion. Horns were overpowering, a lot of the background instrumentals got louder which drowned out his voice, and for some reason it sounded 'tinny' and 'sharp'. I couldn't listen to it with the volume up because it hurt. It sounded like this on the Friday Music version as well.
Why would they? Apart from being a shelf filler, it would be a somewhat pointless release with all the other releases that FTD have made available covering these songs especially with the Hits of the 70s and the fact that Vol 5 is available in a mini box set of GR’s. I doubt FTD will ever go back to the 7" Classic series now.
@@emjel-yi9eg Why not. We got the disappointing Vol 4 with the 12 mono masters on disc 2. That truly was a shelf filler. Makes sense to bring out Vol 5.
@@jonburrows9816 - FTD`s idea at the outset with the Classic album series was to cover albums that had been released during Elvis’ lifetime and GR Vol 4 was one of them, whereas GR5 was not. Including the mono variants on Vol 4 was a great idea as it was one of the last Elvis vinyls to be released in mono and commands a high price amongst collectors. Many collectors would have liked FTD put out the mono variants on the other albums too, and they did so on a few releases including within a couple of their books. RCA should have released GR5 in the summer of 1973 after the Aloha show, or certainly in time for the Christmas market. It may have helped stimulate more sales for the Raised on Rock and Fool albums which were both flops. The market is diminishing each year and Ernst appears to have called it a day on the 7" series, preferring to concentrate on Session releases. Many fans have now drawn a line in the sand over releases that offer just duplication of material preferring to go for releases that at least offer historical context within Elvis’ recording career. With lower numbers buying duplicated material can make it less viable for FTD to put out releases such as the one you favour.
