Russell Rein and Chris Zurbrugg were pretty much 3rd string types and Michigan were lucky to finish the year 6-6. I remember after this game Bo gave one of his more memorable post game tirades about BYU offensive linemen holding on every play. That interview looked like it was held at a video arcade.
BYU as national champion in 1984 was a joke. At 6-6, this Michigan team was the worst in decades, just barely bowl-eligible. So how did barely beating a 6-6 team make them national champions? BYU would have been middle of the pack at best in the Big Ten.
The Fakest national champion ever... If the WAC and Holliday Bowl allowed BYU to play in Orange Bowl vs Oklahoma then WAC conference would have shown its Glory win or lose and would have help boosted recruiting for the WAC teams in the future...Instead they went the weak way and thats why 8 teams like Washington and Boston College turned down the bowl game cuz everyone wants to play in the big game Orange Sugar Rose...The greed of WAC and Holliday Bowl jinked them forever after that...this why BYU is remembered for being the greatest fake champion ever..and the WAC conference became a bigger joke....and Washington beating hot Oklahoma showed they were the true champion outside of provo utah lol......sorry but truth hurts byu fans....enjoy...😂🎉😂 But just imagine #1 BYU vs #2 Oklahoma...woild have been a magic game like the year before in Orange...sad....😢
Washington didn’t even win their own conference. How can you be #1 in the nation but #2 in the PAC 10? A “true champion” doesn’t lose to a mediocre USC team coached by TED TOLLNER They lost the game that mattered most. Period.
