Seve was such a gentleman when he put the jacket on Ben and Ben was such a gentlemen receiving it. I'm one of your biggest fans that's the best thing I ever heard from a recipient of the jacket.
It’s an awful pit didn’t win more majors. He came close and the masters seemed to suit him. He really had the ability and the short game. He was a true global player winning all around the world. His tendency to go wayward off the tee cost him a lot. I once followed him around the west course at Wentworth and he was 7 under after 12 holes. Nobody could come close in his prime. It just makes what Nicklaus did in his era all the more impressive. His major wins and the number of second places in the majors is just insane. I doubt we will see the like again.
I live in S.C. and I started going to Augusta the next Spring and did so for most of 30 years. It is an amazing place. I got to see Ben play often and it was a blessing to me to get to see years of golf there. He was a great addition. I did not remember that he had such a big lead. It is also interesting to see Nick Faldo's swing then. He did not like it and rebuilt it soon so it would hold up better under pressure. Less timing and more control. He got away from that 1970s swing. Brave move.
It's interesting that, in 1984, we got to see front nine coverage starting on the 5th hole, but two years later in 1986 there was no footage of Kite and Ballesteros making eagle on #8.
No one was more dangerous with the flat stick than Ben Crenshaw. Always surprised he only won two majors. He was one of the best during the prime of his career. Also, very strange to see Nick Faldo's old swing. He hit it longer, but with less control. With his new swing, he gave up distance for much more control and accuracy. It was a wise decision and he won a lot more after the change.
When I was a junior golfer I had the pleasure standing right behind him on the practice range at the Texas State Junior at Brakenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio. Even then I knew I was watching a kid, who would go on to greatness. Sweetest swing I ever witnessed!!
Bob Murphy reckoned that Crenshaw’s putt on the 10th was one of the greatest putts he’s ever seen. I believe it was 90% luck, no way was he expecting to make that, he even admitted it afterwards. Seve showed a superb touch of class and dignity in the Butler cabin when congratulating Ben and putting on the green jacket. What a great and charismatic man, RIP LEGEND.........
Frank Glieber with a "Yes Sir" as Crenshaw birdies 8. Glieber was at 17 for years thru '85 when he died shortly after the Masters that year. Verne took over 17 the next year and gave his famous "Yes Sir" when Jack birdied....a call Glieber would have had except for his untimely death. A wow moment watching this.
I was in my 30's when I got bit by the golf bug right after I saw this Masters tournament. 35 years later and Im still smitten by that four letter word.
Great stuff. Somehow all action from Crenshaw's play from his approach at 11 to his 2nd at 13 is edited out. Along with it, action such as Kite's watery approach to 12.
Chuck Booker I was wondering the same thing! Just watched this and was scratching my head when Crenshaw went from 11 to 13... If I remember correctly Crenshaw hit 6-iron to 12 and made the putt.
If there were ever anyone who OWNED one hole in the world, it would be Phil Mickelson owning #13 at Augusta, and Jack Nicklaus owning #16 at Augusta. Even when he's not in contention he ALWAYS birdies that hole.
I remember when I first watched this I watched it al least 10 times. Such a smooth swing. The flag was in a different spot in 84 then it was in 86. The two shots were similar.
Yes, the 83 and 84 masters were instrumental in that decision, as his swing didn’t hold up under pressure. More or less disappeared from leaderboards from 1985 to early 87 whilst he rebuilt his swing.
I know, wish we all had to go back to blades and woods, especially the pros..... You knew who were the great ball strikers back then... Golf has lost alot of its soul and tradition
Lengthening courses was the worst response to improving tech. Tech will always develop, but you can’t keep lengthening courses. The masters is pretty dull nowadays because of it. The answer should have been, and still is, regulations on tech that pros can use in tournaments.
@@jodie4609 yes, he played. Missed the cut after the second round despite being only 6 shots behind the leader as defending champion. Hence the 10 shot rule being brought in.
Certainly love the old commentators Ken ventrui Steve mylnek Tom weiskopf Jimmy Nantz Henry longhurst there are many more pat summerall memory not that great
If you were any kind of true golf fan, you would already know the winner. I know all the winners starting with Horton Smith, and Sarazen To Scheffler and Rahm. Surely you could manage some knowledge of the victors in arguably the biggest prize in golf.
Jhn 3:16?? Christian Race Mtt 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood *they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,* until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
The Masters should not be a major. It is a club invitational tournament. Also with 3 of the 4 majors on US soil it gives players from the US a massive advantage. Majors should be all in different countries as they are in tennis.
Notice how "manly" every man was. And every player had a unique style. Nowadays, the players have no masculinity, and they all play and dress like matching robots.
Where is phil michealson? I like his fake thumbs ups, deer in headlight goofy eyes, ready to choke. Oh, always running towards the gambling table no matter what. He warned his figjam. What a comic relief !
