I had and 84 GLI Silver with the same blue interior. I always liked that interior and dash. Had a lot of fun drives with that car. They are so rare and hard to find any videos on it let alone that actual car. I hope you still have it Matt!
I have an 83 wolfsburg edition.Beautiful vehicles and very cost effective on maintenance.Cannot stand these modern cars nowadays with all the electronics!
Yup, I agree.......95% of the new cars they making now, will be in the "Crusher" in 15 yrs because they will be too expensive to fix. They do not build them, like they use to.
High mounted radio: Good for safety in a car like that. The dashboard: Very blue! It reminds me of Doctor Who for some reason... The engine: Sounds like a rip snorting good time!
1984 Jetta Gli 4 door was the first new car I ever owned, I was 22 and this was the first in a line of many German cars, mostly BMW's, I have owned. My friends called it the "KGB" car. It was the last year of this generation before VW changed the body to the fat and ugly Jetta.
Well, the 1984 Jetta model production started in August 1983 and ended in February 1984, which included the base or GL. The GLI wasn't released till November 1983, making the '84 GLI rare.
I too bought my first new car, and it was a 1984 Jetta Gli. 90hp, no power steering , and it was so fun to drive I daily drove it for 18 years and put 254,000 miles on it. This video I believe is showing the GLI, because of the steering wheel and VDO gages. This car in video was either silver or white based on blue interior . That color combo was rare. I had a Mars Red, purchased in Feb of 1984, and I LOVED it.
I have an LA3A Mars Red GLI 2 Door believe to be one of the earliest with build date Nov 9th 83, Option Code 742 instead of 746. Both 4 door and 2 door were 715 Special sales. Alpine White and Diamond Silver metallic with Blue Leatherette with gray valour centers Code 47. Was the rare two out of the five colors available other were Mars Red Black and Atlas Grey Metallic with Black leatherette and gray valour centers Code 46. No two door GLIs came in Black including the five built for the 1984 US Autoshows circuit, they have 4 door codes, but with two door body's and out of the five two were White, rest were Red, Gray, and Silver.
This was a great body design for visibility, I don't know why friends didn't get this design / thought it looked passé. Quality was brick solid, really too bad VW went away from that totally 'German' approach.
I had a silver 84 GLI. I loved that car. Bought it brand new at age 24 and could barley afford it. I have great memories with that car and the times of my life. It was in fact silver with a blue interior, no power steering and crank windows, sunroof with the Pirelli P wheels. A pure and simple sport sedan of the day. I wish I still had it!
