The Orange Bowl is a great example of how sometimes what you lose can't be measured in dollars and cents. The Dolphins were such a great team at home during their run there...and have been patently mediocre in whatever you call Joe Robbie Stadium today. I'm sure they'd love to replicate the atmosphere that existed in that madhouse. Same for teams like Washington with RFK.
Was the Orange Bowl in the same location of the current Marlins Ballpark? I never cared much for Joe Robbie until they renovated it a few years ago. Much nicer now sitting in the shade as opposed to baking in the Miami sun.
I agree,I can remember when they used to have to stop play on the field cuz it was too loud for the visiting offense, ever since the move for whatever reason its just not as loud,EVER!!even when they had good seasons, just never the same level, really weird!!
I was at this game with my dad and when Marino threw that td to Duper I have to say I've never heard the Orange Bowl louder than that ever before and we went to many games back then. It was a really fun time in Miami to be a Dolphins fan in the 80s. I truly miss those times I'm glad I at least experienced as a kid. Great memories 🤔
Not a Dolphins fan but I remember watching this game as a kid. Great times. Looking back on it I wonder how much coke Duper was on- regardless- he was awesome.
I was there with my dad, too. We were visiting FL from the NY area so I was rooting for the Jets. I remember we parked our car in someone's driveway near the Orange Bowl. My dad and I were shocked that the woman was unable to speak English lol. Different country then
I remember the cutaways to this game as I was watching my Raiders lose in San Diego in another of their classic shootouts. 1985 was the year I first remember watching football and it was awesome. The colors, the speed, the presentation...it's totally nostalgia, but the game felt more fun back then. But that's a function of my childhood and imagination.
Nah,ur right,I firmly believe the NFL is just scripted entertainment today, back then it seemed more real to me,today it is RIDICULOUS what they do in the NFL,its like the F'N WWE now!!
Just better times and real goofball it seemed lol. I mean honestly I remember names of alot of the players on teams I didn't care to much for back then and now I could only name a few of my favorite teams today, uncanny and unexplainable lol
I would say that last TD throw to Duper is one of the top 5 plays in Dolphins history at least. Off the top of my head I can't think of 4 plays that were bigger or more important. I'm not talking games, but single plays.
His throw to FRYAR against NE in his comeback gm in 94 was very similar to this one, except that one was a 4th and 5!!Lamar Smith TD run against colts in WC gm in 00,Mark Clayton TD catch against KC in 90 WC gm Marino fake spike against jets in 94 and honestly thats right off the top,I dont think this one is above any of those, but it was awesome!!
I love those Dolphins old uniform with the number on the selves when I was a little kid but the Dolphins shouldn't have never change those uniform during the 1987 NFL season
Thank you so much for these games my friend. Was starting to watch the Monday night game with the Patriots and ran into this one and " touchdown Mark Duper!!" " Duper has returned, and he is super!!" Thank you sir, you have no idea what the 80s Dolphins mean to me lol. I'm from Chattanooga TN and the Dolphins were my market back then on NBC. Fell in love with the fins in Superbowl 17 then Dan the man Marino and the Marks brothers hit the scene! Wow, just wow.
Only MARINO!!goin deep needing a FG to tie,GETS IT ALL!!reminiscent of his famous comeback 94 opener 4th and 6 goes deep phins win, this isnt quite as dramatic but similar results!!jets had to be thinking marino is only gonna get in FG range,NOPE,LETS GO DEEP and WIN IT!!
Cowboy fan here...growing up in San Diego, watched a lot of Dolphins, Broncos, Raiders and Chargers. Didn't get a lot of Cowboy games. However, as a football fan, I loved watching those teams to include Steelers and Browns. Dick Enberg and Merlen Olson were just as good as Madden and Summerall. Watching this brings back such good memories of the NFL in the 80's. LOVE THE COMMERCIALS!!!!!
This was the start of my hatred towards the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS by beating the N.Y. JETS in the AFC WILD CARD game it became a domino effect didn't get a potential DOLPHINS-RAIDERS or JETS-DOLPHINS AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME or a better SUPER BOWL XX in BEARS-RAIDERS BEARS-DOLPHINS or BEARS-JETS which would've been better games the 1985 PATRIOTS did it with smoke & mirrors while RAIDERS JETS & DOLPHINS were all better teams in 1985
@@johnhaganjr7693 Yeah I remember that year. The Patriots came out of now where and won 3 games in a row only to get blasted in the SuperBowl. I remember looking forward to a Dolphins/Jets or Dolphins/Raiders playoff game. I think that was the year the Jets started the season off hot going 10-1 and losing the remaining 5 to make it as a wild card. I don't know how I remember that, I was 9 years old then.
@@johnhaganjr7693 I was living in Miami at the time and was a Dolphins fan but what difference does it make to say such-and-such team was better. The Patriots won. The Dolphins blew the AFC title game.
I remember watching this game, in fact, I recorded it as well but lost the tape. I would rather rewatch a game like this had the stuff played for football today.
Later in the 1985 NFL season the Chicago Bears would go on the road and meet the Jets. The Bears defense would absolutely crush this same super powerful New York Jets offense that had exploded all over the Miami Dolphins defense not once but twice. The Jets offense would experience this crushing by the Bear defense right in front of their own fans. I wish Miami's defense could have played like that. Too bad.
As A die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan I like the old New York Jets uniforms then today's I think the current ones suck. Same thing with the Miami Dolphins I like the old uniforms with the dark aqua color and the old dolphin logo then today's uniform
These Green ones particularly are awesome. They wore these specific uni’s from 1978-89. From 1990-97 they tweaked the shade of green slightly and added a little bit of black. Then in 1998-present they went back to the Joe Namath era jerseys/colors.
@@fjr70ify I wondered for a second why you would single out that season and then I remembered the Bengals uniform change. You're absolutely right BTW. I also preferred the Bills unis with the white helmet and blue pants from this time.
The Dolphins haven;t been the same since they made their first significant uniform switch before the '86 season. Those didn't look bad mind you, but it was at that point that they went from Super Bowl contenders to mediocre and haven't gotten back to their early '80s level since, not to mention each successive uniform change after that just looked worse and worse.
Yes I totally agree I would go to the old Orange Bowl with my Dad back then, we were at this game as well. Great memories growing up in those days miss them so much.
I was 7 years old, watching this game with my Grandparents. My Nana lived and died for the Dolphins. She woulda absolutely voted for Shula for president. Lol. When the Jets scored with a minute left i started crying and ran as fast as my little legs could carry me into the laundry room. Nana followed me in there , hugged me and told me, " Quit your crying boy. It ain't over. And we got Marino." She then called it. " He'll hit one of the Marks to win it". We all jumped and screamed for joy when Duper scored. Nana jumped out of the chair and exclaimed , " What did I tell you ?! The Jets ain't been shit since Namath was wearing pantyhose. " Good times. The Dolphins were once one of the marquee franchises in the NFL. Poor ownership is the primary cause of this decline.
Here we Go again the Continued Blood boiling Jets and Dolphins rivalry 😊 1980's style . Bobby Humphrey on the Jets man on punt returns 😊 The late great Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen on the call for this game on NBC at 4pm.
Thank you for your post:) Do you have the 85 MNF matchup between them in New York? Id love to see it,I don't like the score but it was a sentimental game for me.
I vividly remember watching this game and noticing that the helmet stripe for the Fins was a rainbow! Was hoping it was not a permanent change. I would do anything for these old uniforms again EVEN with the rainbow! 😆
Dolphins defense blasted by the Jets again! Earlier in the year on Monday Night Football the Jets rolled up 476 yards of total offense on Miami. In this game they rolled up 491 yards. Staggering!! But, so what? Miami still won anyway. Miami won in heroic fashion too. Miami refused to let the Jets sweep them and leave them for dead. Instead, Miami fought their way back into the thick of the AFC East division race of 1985.
Believe it or not at this point in time it was only the 3rd ever win in NFL history by a team that was outgained by at least 90 yards AND had a turnover margin of -3 or more. The Jets just kept finding new and creative ways to not score for nearly 3 quarters.
Miami's defense was a disaster most of Dan Marino's prime. This is why it's so moronic when people act like it's Marino's fault he didn't win a super bowl. That crap defense was embarrassing. A major stain on Shula's otherwise great career was keeping clueless DC Olivadotti as coach, and the front office not improving the defense for years.
Pat Leahy with three critical missed field goals for the Jets …smh. However, by the same token, Duper cost the Dolphins 7 points when he bobbled and dropped a certain touchdown pass from Marino that was right on target. He made up for that though. Boy did he.
@@DolFan316 Excellent observation, DolFan316. How interesting. So it sounds like at the end of the 1985 season, Leahy had hit 25 of his last 29 field goal attempts. That is absolutely outstanding. Just this one bad day in Miami.
NFL WEEK 10 1985 my my my the early games were meh but those three late games JETS-DOLPHINS RAIDERS-CHARGERS & COWBOYS-REDSKINS couldn't find three more entertaining late games thankfully JETS-DOLPHINS & RAIDERS-CHARGERS were uploaded I wish that COWBOYS-REDSKINS game was uploaded
1984 Jets start out 6-2... go 1-7 the rest of the way. 1985 Jets start out 7-2... go 4-3 the rest of the way. 1986 Jets start out 10-1... go 0-5 the rest of the way. 1987 Jets start out 6-5... go 0-4 the rest of the way. Walton's teams were known to collapse down the stretch.
As a Dolphin fan living in Jersey during the '80's, I got to see O'Brien suck week after week, but somehow Miami's defense made him look like a HOFer 2 times a season.
At 203:40 that ball went off claytons hands, that shoulda been a catch, thats the thing with both MARKS bros, neither had great hands and were more of body catchers, then with their hands as they say good job knocking it down??if both his hands were on it,shoulda been a catch, but it was all hands and thats not where they were at their best or high pointing it!!
1:19:47 Switch to highlights of the Raiders-Chargers game. Odis McKinney hammers Charlie Joiner to the ground with a forearm and then Rod Martin kicks Joiner in the face. Really? Wow. Is this part of the Raiders mystique? Perhaps. In any case, the Raiders would eventually lose the game in a shootout. This left me unhappy. I rarely rooted for the Dan Fouts led San Diego Chargers and always pulled for the Raiders to beat them whenever the two teams met.
I couldn't root for the Raiders back then under any circumstances, except for when they faced the Redskins in The Super Bowl. I just couldn't stand to see the Skins win back to back and was glad they got thrashed. But literally no other time did I ever root for the Raiders in any game for about 20 years.
@@DolFan316 That's all right DolFan316. At least you rooted for the Dolphins in their games. That's what counts. Although I often pulled for the Raiders against most NFL teams, I never was for them any time they played the Dolphins. In 1984 I so wanted Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins to win the Super Bowl. The 34-45 loss to the Raiders at the Orange Bowl that season was a bitter pill to swallow. The destruction by the 49ers in the Super Bowl was much worse, of course. So depressing.
