The is the last race for the 1987 ATCC championship going down to the wire between Jim Richards and Glenn Seton, action a plenty with some great race cam footage from the Allan Grice VL Commodore, enjoy! Sorry for a few bumps in the tape quality at the start, auto record started a bit late all those years ago, oh well, great to see this race again! :-) All Credit Channel 7 Sport.

The 1987 Australian Touring Car Championship was a motor racing competition which was open to Touring Cars complying with regulations as defined by CAMS and based on FIA Group A rules. The championship, which was the 28th Australian Touring Car Championship, began on 1 March 1987 at Calder Park Raceway and ended on 5 July at Oran Park Raceway after nine rounds. The Calder round saw the world debut of the racing versions of the BMW M3, the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and the Alfa Romeo 75 Turbo.
After years of racing for very little in prize money which brought numerous complaints from the leading competitors (in 1984, Dick Johnson Racing (DJR) had travelled an estmated 20,000 km to races around the country from their Brisbane base, often for as little as A$1,200 in prize money, far less money that was on offer at the time for the lower ranked Group E "Super Series"), CAMS signed a A$200,000 sponsorship package with Shell which brought the championship an overall sponsor for the first time and saw the series promoted as the Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Championship

been racing these cars in assetto corsa on PC. There are some really fun racing leagues to join that are still living the dream virtually

This was the third year of Channel 7's coverage of the ATCC in 1987 & 1987 was also the final year that the Seven Sport commentators wore the red blazer as their uniform.

Thanks heaps for this, awesome stuff. I was there that day as a 13 yo kid with my dad. Love the way all the drivers were congratulating each other too. Quite frankly, I think this is better racing than we have today and how good was Ch7 coverage

Did anyone else notice car 18 at 9m.59s with the left wheels 18''--20'' off the ground?? I did not know until recently, 1981 Allan Grice was in a BMW 635, and i thought 1987 John Bowe was with DJR in car 18, but in this race he is in Nissan Skyline car 60, John Bowe in previous years also raced the Volvo 240. The BMW M3 were only four cylinder N/A so about 300HP but had fantastic handling and braking IF you could keep the engine on the on the boil, they did not like dropping RPM during the race, you needed to keep the RPM up! 30m into the race, i do not believe that passing maneuver on Glenn Seton was fair I think Jim Richards pushed him a bit, hard to say, nowadays that would a stop/go penalty unless re addressed by Jim on track.
