This isn't the same operation. You are thinking of Operation Praying Mantis when the US Navy destroyed half of Iran's operational naval forces in 8 hours. This operation happened almost a full year before Praying Mantis.
I just bought the WW2 asset pack and the P-47D and the Wolfpack map. I had a blast with it today. Took about an hour to figure out what key binds I needed the startup procedure, takeoff, flying. Thanks Cap. Your tutorials have saved so many people from uninstalling the game.
So good! I love these missions based on real history. I do this kind of thing a lot. There's a channel called The Operations Room where he shows military battles with awesome graphics and narration. That will inspire a mission in DCS, especially when we have the exact assets in-game to recreate it perfectly. I just did the Operation Praying Mantis when the US retaliated against Iran for mining a US warship. We had La Combattante II in game that was exactly what was sunk by Intruders, which we don't have in-game, but I substituted with Hornets which was almost the same capabilities. They used LGB's and cluster munitions which we also have. That would be a great GR recreation if you haven't already done it (you've done so many I can't remember) Anyways, well done. Made my night!
Thanks! Really enjoy watching the history videos and your star wars type too! Retired AF crew dog working F-4's, F-16's, MQ-1&9's, and some F-1 Mirage and A-4 skyhawks. Keep up the great work and if I may make a suggestion would like to see and alert scene where China would do a surprise attack onto our west coast and Russia surprise attack on our east coast. You can pick the scenario on to what targets are hit but show the take of scramble of our current technology alerting Seymour Johnson, Langley and any Navy Marines you like. I have been told since I was a kid, and I am 57, that this would happen no nukes is my only attack not to do, as it would not make any sense. Thank you.
I read an account of the mock dogfights that the Navy conducted at Miramar NAS between the Phantom and the new at that time Tomcat. The Phantom pilots had dogfighting experience in Vietnam and figured that the Tomcat wouldn't do well against the Phantom just due to the F-14's size and weight. Their figuring was wrong. The Tomcat completely overwhelmed and overmatched the Phantom.
@reapertalon Until February 2001. And he wasn't just pretty good, he was one of the best. Still tied for the most championships, 7btw, and 8th for all time race wins.
He has also confirmed he has a moustache and has a wife called Meg. Which is probably a Meg Ryan Topgun reference. And I am pretty sure there is another Dale Earnhardt reference but I cannot remember. Not sure why everyone hates him, I find him funny and mostly useful.
This is also around the time when the USS Vincennes shot down an Iranian airliner over the Strait of Hormuz, having mistaken it for an Iranian F-14, killing all aboard.
That was awesome... The saying "everyone has a plan until 1st contact with the enemy" was proved again here and the chaos into Victory was fantastic! A+ 10 out of 10 stars... will watch again.
That day, I went from Massachusetts to Yankee Stadium, to see a baseball game with many friends and family members. Maybe 8 or 10 of us from New England, meeting another 10 or 12 from New Jersey where I grew up. I was 30, and it must have been just a few weeks after finding out my wife was pregnant, so before we found out it was going to be twins. They're 36 now, and turned out well. Our next trip to a ballgame will include a grandkid. Who knows what military aviation event will happen on that random future day. Hopefully just training missions or the first flight of a new type. Pretty cool to find out what else happened that day, all these decades later. When we were young, we couldn't past history through the lens of what we were doing on that day. The older I get, the more history falls into a category like "I was working on this project, living in that place, driving a certain car, and do/don't remember hearing the news of that day."
Cap...been watching these for a while. They are extremely entertaining. The premise of weather as a factor in this scenario makes me wonder if/how weather might impact any or all of the scenarios...for instsnce flying in or around a thunderstorm. Afternoon thunderstorms are extremely common anywhere around the South Pacific.
Great vid GRs!! 👌 Have you guys done a video on how to access the training server and how to use it for new players. That may be a good idea to navigate some traffic overthere. Maybe you could offer recorded payed lessons for people wanting to improve. Just some thoughts.
FYI the Iranians had a P-3 as well. We could always tell when it was down for maintenance because they would send out a C-130. Both used for targeting tankers.
Robert Clement. A few years back in the NHL, there was a defenseman (I believe) -- and later to become an announcer. Bill Clement i.e, Clement, Clement, hands of Cement!) My vote for LCdr Robert Clements' call sign? CEMENT!
Guess the top brass didn’t wanna start a war led by an international incident which was started by Iran, gotta love the back room meetings. Plausible Deniability is the word for that day!
My heart sank a bit when I saw you brought B's; article says it was F-14A's from VF-21. Gotta say, I think this scenario would have been completely different with period-accurate TF30's. But please don't take this as a major complaint; I love to see the Tomcat get any screen time from GR.
That one wire is the least of the LSOs (and the Air Bosses) worries. First priority is trying to explain why they lost three Tomcats on the flight deck. 😂😂
24:57 What is an e-bracket? Is it like what e-mail is but for brackets? I've always use the perfectly serviceable AoA indicator to the left of the big red e-mergency jettison guard.
@@grimreapers I suggest: who can perform the fastest landing, land a F-14 with wings in full back sweep, landing whist low level AI straif, approach the ball inverted🤣.... a few interesting little kinks to keep it interesting.....
Almost certainly political cover, to avoid escalating conflict with Iran. Admitting that Iran launched an unprovoked attack on US forces would have been difficult to do without responding.
When did they find out that they truly hit the plane? It happened in 1987 hopefullly it didnt take till 2024 to know the pilot did his job well. Im guessing they were pissed about the perfromance of the missile and pilot error was the easiest excuse.
Hey Grim reapers its me again and theres more bots in your comments. various usernames. just search for them iin your 38. well now 39 comments with mine.
So the biggest thing I got out of the briefing is that in spite of missiles being quite expensive they tend to suck and fail often in real life. Wish my job let me get rich making crappy products and never be held accountable.
The difference is the parameters you need to operate in. Designing a small rocket that is flown by a computer which takes instructions on where to fly from another computer that is beaming microwaves at an object moving at 1000 miles an hour in 3d space, and that object has systems built to try and counter it is a bit more difficult than making coat hangers or whatever.
