I remember watching this at junior school (on our lunch). We were staggered to have them 5 down so early! Then Dujon and Logie took it away from us. One of the rare times in the 1980s we had them in the trouble. Briefly!
Right background and connections? I think they were always looking for the next Botham, so several all rounders were tried. At the time, I could never understand why Pringle played so many tests though.
Portcullis always thought he was clueless but changed my mind that Saturday at Headingley (1991?) when he battled in support of Gooch vs Ambrose on the rampage. You forget how fearsome these bowlers are until you watch from square if the wicket at ground level.
The Test immediately after the 'Gatting/barmaid' debacle.....and the start of another series of defeats against the then mighty West Iindies [NOT Windies].....Note no Botham in the side - injured this summer after just a handful of county appearances in early season. Moxon for Gatting was not 'like for like' in any other way but the place in the batting order
West Indies had Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh and Patterson. England had Derek Pringle. Greenidge, Haynes, Richards and company must have been bricking themselves! The phrase "peashooter against tanks" springs to mind!
23.38 mins Chris Broad given out with ball clearing pitching outside leg stump. No wonder Broad was upset and the dissent he showed cost him his place in the team and he never played for England again!
