I loved the way they used to do gymnastics back than.... so matter of fact. Like we say in the ballet world: everything happened "Out of a breath" Both Silivas and Shushunova were spectacular.... too bad there can be only one winner. Being romanian myself of course I like Silivas better :-)
i don't care what anybody says, for me Shushunova's floor exercise is the most beautiful performance on that apparatus there will ever be. no question about it.

i have gym the Olimpic games 88 recorded..i used to watched everyday between 1988-1990. That was the most beautiful olimpic gym i have seen in my life. I was 11 in 88, unfortunately i was not born when Nadia Comaneci won Montreal. Seoul was unforgatable because had the duel Silivas-Shushunova, like Comaneci-Kim. I never get tired to watch seoul 88 olimpic gymnastics.
Thank you so much for posting these gymnastics vids. It's so interesting to see that in 1988 some gymnasts were so far ahead of their time. The Double Layout one of the romanians did on the floor was amazing, and the double double that silivas did is still a super e element today. Thank you again for taking the time to load these up, I can't wait to see what other ones you have :)
This was no holds barred. These teens came out and performed like it was nothing. Best Oly gymnastics battle ever. Im partial to the 96 tf, because of the great Mag 7 perf, but here, u got to see how amazing all of the dominant teams were...
Truth be told, BULGARIA was the team that deserved the bronze medal. They were in the opening rotation of compulsories (when scores tend to be lower), then were a rotation before GDR and USA (again subject to lower scores) for optionals. The BULGARIANS were fascinating and distinct in floor exercises. They also produced some original work on bars and beam. USA was in the very last rotation to for both compulsories and optionals. They reaped the benefits of generous judging. All things considered, a solid team who had a favorable draw. By no means did they deserve a medal. GDR had to forge ahead with 5 team members. Dagmar Kersten and Dorte Thummler were magnificent, but the other team members were not captivating in the least. Politics in sports assured them a bronze medal that belonged to Bulgaria.
As soviéticas vieram com tudo depois da derrota em 1987 para as romenas! Shoushounova e Boguinskaia foram ótimas e mereceram suas medalhas. As romenas estavam apaixonantes! Más como beleza não conta pontos, no conjunto a prata foi justa! Silivas e Potorac são lindas!!
The US got a penalty of .50 for the team's alternate not leaving the podium during a bar routine- as mentioned and it was harsh- what's not mentioned is the history behind it- the East German judge who did it had been in a multi year feud with US Coach Bela Karolyi...she tried to penalize him in 1984 (the East German judges were there as part of the IGF, while their athletes were not) for running on to the podium and hugging Mary Lou Retton between her 2 vaults- that too was a 0.50 deduction- Bela dared her to do it- in front of 40,000 screaming American fans, then reported called her a cow. She chose not to do it- because it would have led to pandemonium...she remembered and took revenge on 6 girls 4 years later.
A Bulgária deveria ter ficado na 4ª colocação, no conjunto foram muito superiores às norte-americanas. Seul foi uma Olimpíada que Bela Karoli quis esquecer!!!!!
