This was such a wonderful bars final. The quality of the routines was just so high - near perfect. I love event finals like this, where every gymnast puts in their all and it's so close.
1992 finals are so amazing, it's so intense and all of them got so high scores! Dunno why I touched and in tears. Hope this year also a fantastic game! See this year Olympic finally starts it makes me cry. Good luck to all and to the world!
If you were to take Miller and Gutsu's routine into the next quad's code of points, Miller gets more bonus. And even from a coaching perspective, it IS a harder routine. The combinations make it harder - it does take more precision.
No question about it - Miller was so precise in all of her skills- probably her best quality. That being said - I bet that kim Gwang Suks routine would have a higher value than both Miller & gutsu for the next quads code and beyond. She was robbed of a medal here - all because of one step
@@crystalt1033 That was 10 scoring for you. It was all about deductions if you started out of 10. How Gogean won beam at the 97 worlds with that ridiculously easy routine since it was still out of 10.
Gutsu got over-scored. Both Li Lu and Shannon Miller had higher difficulty and both nailed their dismounts. Tatiana’s routine felt extremely short compared to everyone else’s and while her dismount was clean, it wasn’t nearly as spot on as the other two. I would’ve given gold to Li Lu, solved to Shannon, and then bronze to Gutsu. I think Shannon got robbed here since Gutsu was so blatantly over-scored. Glad she at least wasn’t unfairly handed a gold and that Li Lu deservedly won.
I see a lot of people here comparing Gutsu's routine with Miller and arguing over who should have won the silver. Here's the way I see it: Both of their routines had the same start value (10.0), and they both kept excellent form throughout. Gutsu had a more difficult dismount (double layout compared to Miller's full in), however Miller's routine was overall "slightly" more difficult (she did a two release combination, and a pirouette into her dismount). However, Gutsu had more amplitude in all of her skills. Both of her release moves were higher than Miller, she came closer to handstand on her transition to low bar, and she flew higher on her dismount. From that perspective, I would rate Gutsu's routine as slightly superior in terms of execution, even though Shannon had more difficulty. And neither of their routines were as amazing as Lu Li. The scoring was fair!
I think there is a good case Gwang Suk should have been over both even with the small step. Her routine was insane. Without the step I would have given it to her over Lu Li or atleast given both 10s, even with the form issues on a few of the hard things.
At this meet she was 15, 1989 she came to worlds when she was 12. Her teeth were broken because if you’ve ever seen some of her other competitions her jaeger has been scary close, nearly hitting her face. I think her coaches should have waited until this year then had her come to the olympics and surprise everyone but 🤷🏾♂️ almost 30 years ago now
@lanpingpug The FIG began investigating Hong after she entered the 2010 worlds using the third different birth date of her career. She listed her birth year as 1989, but the FIG said it found documents showing she had competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 worlds using a birth year of 1985. She won the silver medal on vault at the 2007 worlds listing 1986 as her birth year. If Hong was born in 1989, she would have been ineligible to compete in Athens.
"few whistles from the crowd" story of this olympics... the fans knew when they watched more difficult routines and the score didnt reflect it... re gutsu i prefer watching miller but i aways got why she was all around champion
Lets be real. Kim was underscored and they were happy she took the step and they had an excuse to drop her off the medals with the absurdly high scoring then, since everyone knew she was underaged and like 10 years old. It was a political thing, and I kind of get it.
@raichmaneuvers I'm beginning to agree with your argument about Kim because she upgraded her dismount to a double layout. That should have gotten more credit than a 9.912. I wonder, though, if Kim had scored a 10, would they have given Lu Li a 10 also? It was certainly worth it, but part of the reason she got it is because her performance was so clearly better than everyone else's. If she goes toe-to-toe against Kim, maybe the judges don't put her on equal footing. Just a thought.
@raichmaneuvers Well, the problem with Kim is that step cannot be ignored. The judges showed here and in Indianapolis that the difficulty of her routine outweighs the slight form breaks, but it's harder to make that case with such an obvious error on the landing. In that sense, it left the door open for Gutsu and Miller who had no visible errors. Pasca got cheated most of all--beautiful releases, flawless form and perfect landing. She should have been no worse than 3rd.
Perhaps, but Kim left the door open with that dismount. Had it not been for that step, I'm sure the judges would have thrown out 10, or at least a 9.975.
the commentator atraight up says that Kim Gwang Suk was listed as 17 at a previous competition and listed 16 at these games. i guess because she did not win a medal the IFC did not investigate. north korea is under a ban right now anyway
@conradbinky It doesn't surprise me about the age. She could be 10 for all they know. Tiny children do remarkable musical and gymnastics in North Korea, not so much because they have a natural talent but because they HAVE to be talented at whatever they do. Hours of practice and beatings and threats make sure of that. I didn't know they were under a ban now, how did that come about?
@raichmaneuvers Okay, I'll buy that argument. I like putting Pasca in second because of the three huge releases and flawless form. I also like putting Kim in third. I can deal with that. Gutsu and Miller benefitted from others' mistakes to get higher than normal scores because both routines look quite ordinary next to the other finalists. Let me ask you this: if Kim had stuck her dismount, would you be okay giving her and Lu Li a 10 and tying for the gold?
Pasca wasn't a big name in the sport, even in Romania she was overshadowed by Milo, Bontas, young Gina Gogean, maybe Hadarean. It is why she even lost the world bars title to Milo at the event worlds which is kind of ridiculous as Pasca clearly has the better bars set, even though she is weaker on all other 3 events. So combine that with going 1st which was super unlucky in this really deep field, she was never going to realistically medal, unless there were some falls or something. I agree on merit she could have deserved it but it was just never happening. Good that she atleast managed to tie for 4th. And some others already mentioned that but they were happy to find an excuse to dump Kim since the age controversy had really blew up by then, much beyond the 91 worlds. If she had stuck her dismount they would have no choice to score her 9.975-10 and give her a medal, possibly even a gold/tie for gold, but when she gave them an out they were always going to hammer her for that reason. To avoid the whole controversy around her.
Kim was probably underscored since the judges knew she was like 11 and shouldn't have even been there. That is my theory anyway. Still without the step they have to give her atleast silver probably but the step was a good excuse to drop her.
@@timothygruber2587she couldn’t have been 11- she competed at a world championships 3 years prior , and she could not have possibly been 8 there. She was speculated to be 14 here, but it was never authorised. No reason to judge unfairly due to age, anyhow.
I disagree. Miller had a more conservative swing on her giants, her release moves had less air time and were caught with bent arms, and her dismount hugged the high bar. Gutsu didn't have the polish that Miller did but she had a more aggressive swing, greater amplitude on her release moves (notice the air she gets on her Tkatchev), and her dismount went way above the bar. I don't even like Gutsu very much but she definitely should've outscored Miller here and deservedly did so, IMO of course.
@QPHashSS77 I actually agree Gutsu was overscored. But so was Miller when you consider her deductions like her low release moves that were caught with bent arms and performing a dismount with little amplitude.
Exactly what you got from a games controlled by the Soviet Union. That’s the reason the judges started being watched closely- and several (Nellie Kim for one) were sanctioned and suspended for bias.
Whatever the discussion about the rest of the medals, can I just say that thank goodness Lu Li showed up when she did. Because as beautiful as Gutsu was, it really would have been a shame if she'd won this title.
@@Namastephie yes I know plus how does a 14 yr old look like Arnold? The 90s was the best era for women's gymnastics, every country was competitive. Those days ended in 2002 sadly. Shannon Miller is one of my favourites with the Romanians. Lol they look like wrestlers, shit good one. A friend in Canada
Doug Raddi yup, the days of Svetlana boginskaya, Tatiana Gutsu and Lavinia Miloşovici (I think Chusovitina was there, isn’t she always? 😂) and lu li. 92 was the best. And 96 a close 2nd!
@MeanestCoachEver Under the current code Gwang Suk would have easily beaten both Miller and Gutsu since her A score would have been light years higher than everyone other than maybe Lu Li, and probably higher than Lu Li too. Lu Li may still have won with very high A and B scores, but Gwang Suk would have for sure gotten atleast silver under the current code of points.
Tatiana should never have won nor been in the all around. They cheated by saying Rosalia was injured. Therefore she would not have been in all around cause Rosalia would have been in her spot
Ah, the Gutsu TROLLS are out in full force here. Sorry, boobs: Miller's routine was and is HARDER and was done with far better form. Gutsu, as usual, being handed medals she did not deserve--one of the worst Soviet productions ever. Careless, negligent in form, robotic, and graceless. Miller's routine has infinitely more difficult connections here. As for the other medals, Pasca was robbed as usual. Kim was gifted as usual because of her big trick. Lu Li was a beautiful bar worker.
Tatiana Gutsu wasn't even supposed to compete in all around. Gutsu fell from beam during qualifications. Rosa Galyeva was supposed to compete in all around but they pulled her out saying she had an injury that she did not have. That being said...Gutsu did what was expected of her. Always felt so bad that Galyeva had to suffer because of it!
@@annapavfan4680 it’s a spot on description. Gutsu was a prime example of exactly how corrupted the games had been with the Soviet Union. She did what was expected when they lied her into the AA final then set it up for her to be given the win. I don’t blame her for that part, but her selfish attempt to “sympathize with Rosa” was the act of a spoiled brat. To this day those games carry the putrid stink of taint.
