I might have to check out Drive-In, sounds fun! I have some great drive-in memories, saw the very first Friday the 13th at a drive-in. Everybody go buy one of Michael's books!

😁😁That seems like the perfect movie for a drive-in!

As someone who rarely reads horror, 1988 was the year the 2 non-Stephen King adult horror novels I read were published: 'The Master' by Guy N. Smith (fantastic book cover) and 'Mirror' by Graham Masterton.

I almost put it in the montage, but figured: what if someone''s eating. I don't know, that pimply hand would have me lose my appetite

That Seed of Evil cover concept art was reused a few times. I have another book with just a slightly different cover. ooh, I had planned to read the drive-in this summer! (seemed like a summer kind of read). Bugle boy jeans 😂 Congrats on the new book release!

Thanks😀Yeah, I think the drive-in would make for a good summer read. (It's super short, under 200 pages)

Awesome video as usual Michael! Loved the montage of covers, read about six of those. Cabal is entertaining, but you are correct, not his best novel. The Drive-In is so much dark, twisted fun. Love Lansdale! Have the second book on my kindle and might save it for Halloween. John Saul has been a miss for me. Do you want a chat on Sunday about our future plans? My next guest bailed.

Child's Play is very special to me because it's the first horror movie I ever watched even though I was born one year after its release!

Joe R. Lansdale is terrific, especially his short fiction. He wrote "The Night They Missed the Horror Show," which is really powerful. You might want to look at the "Year's Best Horror" anthology series from DAW, which in the Eighties was edited by Karl Edward Wagner.

@@Michael_Wertenberg Well, I've enjoyed the following so far: Cold in July, Bubba Ho-Tep, Freezer Burn, and quite a few of the Hap & Leonard mysteries. But you'll probably not go far wrong with any Lansdale title.

@@Michael_WertenbergLansdale's Sanctified and Chicken-Friend is a collection of his shorter works. I'm currently enjoying it. It may be a good entry point -- it's something of a smorgasbord of his varied output.

what horror books from 1988 I read: Prime Evil anthology(like two stories , Night flier by Stephen King and Coming to Grief by Clive Barker). Stinger by Robert Mcammon loved this one Cabal by Clive Barker(love this one and I have the same UK edition paperback as yours bought it in a Hong Kong book shop back in 88), the movie was meh. The Drive In by Joe Landsdale(love this one) Necroscope Vampyri by Brian Lumley(this was OK, body horror vampires)

I've heard good things about Prime Evil. Great roaster of writers. I should probably check it out. I review Necroscope in the 1986 instalment of this retrospective. Thanks for the feedback!😀

The Unloved is not my favorite Saul book for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. I think the appeal of him to me is that his ideas are often weird or off in kind of a genre outsider way. His books are schlocky, formulaic, and often have the same ending, but some of the premises are just bonkers. If you do decide to read another one, I recommend Creature.
@Michael_Wertenberg

Thanks for the recommendation. The weird and off outside way was what appealed to me initially with Suffer the Children.

@@Michael_Wertenberg I mean, it could probably go on your next Horror Books for dumb people compilation, but it's such a singular take on the "evil science lab" trope that I love it. Nathaniel is also notable for having one of the hardest third act left turns that kind of makes the whole thing fall apart in an interesting way. I know these are weird recommendations. I kind of simultaneously love his books and think they're trash.

and for gaming, 1988 played a bunch of horror rpgs such as: Beyond the supernatural by palladium , was OK, I was playing Recon and Robotech a lot more at the time. Chill RPG by pace setter love this one, played this a few times Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium yah played a bunch of these, love it, da best horror rpg before Vampire 2nd ed. came about.

YT is messing with me again. Anyway. I read Saul when I was a teen. When i was older I picked up Creature and it was garbage. Never read anything by him since. Ithink he's more of a YA author. Much love❤️hope this comment goes through.

What have you been doing to upset YT so? She can be quite petty and moody, can't she? Lately, she's been saying that she appreciates my feedback. But she keeps asking me the SAME question over and over again. I don't think she's even listening to me.😔

I agree that Cabal is weak (such a great opening, though), but I must say that I’ve known damaged people in relationships because they felt like they should or needed to. I’d assume Barker has, too, including (probably) some clients from his prostitute days who wanted him to be that for them. The Drive-In is a great little book, and such a distinctively Lansdale book. Try his Hap & Leonard series next, maybe. Someday I’ll read a Saul book. They do sound fascinating in their oddness. Checking out the 1989 Stoker nominees… Silence of the Lambs won for best novel. It’s worthy. David Morrell won best novelette for “Orange is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity”. It’s *really* worthy. So are King’s “The Night Flier” and Straub’s “The Juniper Tree”.
