My first car was an 89 just like this. As a stupid young kid (17 yrs,) I beat the crap outta that car, did not change the oil for a year and it still held up extremely good. When the mechanic changed the timing belt he said that it was still in incredible shape. I really regret getting rid of that car.

I had a 1989 Escort Pony, the base version. It was the only brand new car I ever owned. Bought it off the lot at Jack Griffin Ford in Waukesha, WI. That was in the day when new economy cars were $7,000. I used to drive it all over the place joy riding for hundreds of miles because of the excellent gas mileage. Chicago, up north WI, Madison, etc.

OMG my childhood flooding back to me.. lol That ding ding sound... the engine sound.... and the seatbelts are supposed to go along that track.. like they're foisted apon you weather u wanna wear it or not. lol That cracked dashboard was well underway by the mid 90's lol. We had a black 2 door one but everything else is the same. :-) Radio looked different. We had the cassette player! lol *canned audience* ooOOoo So many roadtrips... We drove from Jersey to New Hampshire and back in that friggin thing. Me, my parents, my brother and the dog in the trunk. lol There used to be a big plastic thing that was attached to the hatchback and lowered into place so it'd be like a closed off trunk but we took it out too.

In 98 my mom got a new Beetle. We got a good 110 120 miles out of it and it just stopped starting and we let it sit in the driveway until 2003 when we moved and it got towed away.

I HAD A WHITE 89 ESCORT, PONY. BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN CALIFORNIA FOR 6 GRAND. 4 FUEL PUMPS BURNT OUT. YOU HAVE TO KEEP THE GAS TANK FULL OR THE FUEL PUMP HEATS UP. THE GAS IS USED TO KEEP THE PUMP COOL. CRAPPY CAR. A DRIVE TO WORK AND THE GROCERY STORE CAR. took mine to New York from California and back a few times.

This Escort actually has the LTD Crown Victoria chime instead of the Dodge Omni buzzer.

@crammage Yea hes happy with it, needs new shocks though like I said. I too was surprised how well its been kept up when I put my hand on it it had very little vibration. Should have been able to do a nickel test it was running that smooth.

There's a reason vehicle crash fatalities have substantially decreased in recent years.

@joeldude76 Yea then again this was his grandmas car before his. So that could have something to do with it. Atleast he knew it was taken car of though. She apparently always kept up on the maint.

It’s a shame I was way to young to drive back when those were made. Now they are heard to find in good condition. For some reason I prefer the coupe version. Still an awesome first car though.

hanksranger I knew it wasn't your car, but ya get what I mean lol. Nice car though for him! Gets like 19MPG City, 25MPG Combined and 29MPG Highway. Also I think these Escorts were 110HP. I love the old fashion air filter on the top of the motor. The one I am getting needs a fuel pump is what I am told, but the junk yard is a place I can get one cheap.

If I remember right it rides ok, these escorts were pretty well built. I currently drive a 95 tercel and I think his escort rides better

I had one of these, only mine was silver. I bought it off an old lady in 1996 for $1700. It had 72K miles on it when I got it and I drove that bitch for five years until she had 168K on it. The only thing I EVER had to replace on it was a headlight bulb and the fuel pump, and I had a brake job done about a year before I sold it to a Mexican for $700 in 2001. I got 96,000 miles out of it and got back more than half of what I paid for it when I sold it. Best car I ever owned.

My parents had an 88 LX Wagon they got brand new with a 5 speed. Ours had just shy of 200,000 mi when the head gasket went. My dad decided to junk it rather then get it fixed. Years later they got an old beater 91 LX (Mazda based 2nd gen) two door. Not that the 91 wasn't a good car, it just felt more flimsy then the 88 as far as the build quality goes.
