Not long after Brendan Byrne the Dead played Chrysler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan and that was the main topic of conversation. People were shocked that that could happen. And yes, 35 years later I seek justice. You are not forgotten Adam Katz, and one day. One day.
I hope he didn't really think the box office would even know what he was talking about "MO tickets" lol. But he didn't seemed a bit concerned about not getting in..I lost a ticket in Starlake Amp in PA in 92, and lost my mind, until I was able to secure a ticket to the show. Most of my friends were like him, though. went out with no tickets, and don't seem to care if they get in, or not. I was there for one reason, and that was the show..I delivered pizzas and bought all my tickets for the tour in advance. Then they were cool, and let me off for whenever the tour was. So I knew I was getting in ever night. Every day felt like xmas, at the time, for me. Nothing will ever come remotely close, to the pure joy, and will prove to have been the best time of my life. No question. I miss you Jerry! Also Brent, Vince, and Pigpen. RIP to you all. RH and JPB as well! Wow, that really makes it all seem so long ago, and it was, I guess. But it feels so recent to me. I was just a kid back then..I'm damn near 50 now, and still feel like that kid. Crazy...There is nothing like a Grateful Dead show!! Nor will there ever be.
My friend and I took our mountain bikes for a ride around the inside of the arena's fenced perimeter and back out during the show. I had a few interactions w/ security at these shows. I was there for 2 nights. Worst security ever to roam a parking lot.
RIP Adam Katz. I remember these shows for the wrong reason. Brendan Byrne was the concrete jungle of venues and the security was off the charts cruel. If I remember correctly the Sunday show was extra crazy due to the Giants game across the lot at the stadium. I’d seen great shows there but ‘89 was s bad vibe IMO.
there were so many fake tix for this show and i got one.i ended up hangin out with other heads that didnt get in .we sang dead tunes wonderin what we were missin....i did get in for weir's bday show!....Thanks for sharing ....where am i .....Peace and Jerry on!
NYC? It's in JERSEY!!! I remember the Adam Katz situation. There was a period there where parkinglot security seemed like they were hopped up on steroids. They would go after people for no reason at all. They were the ones starting trouble. What sux about that is I knew a bunch of the security guys - they would come in the restaurant I worked at for dinner and they were super nice. It was a small bunch that were problem people. I was on tour a LOT during the late 80s - Giantland and Brendan Byrne had a lot of problems as far as security abusing people. Worse than any other place i went. They tried to start something with the bunch i was with one evening - all the guys were younger than i was so i kinda jumped in the middle of it. Basically i scolded them. I remember looking at one overly muscled, angry for no reason, guy and i just said what do you think you're going to do? Hit a girl? Seriously I'm 5'3" and maybe 105 lbs. I guess they figured that would look REALLY bad because they left. Many stories of people being harrassed or beat up by those idiots. To this day i believe they were responsible for what happened to Adam. They know who they are. Karma's a bitch. It will come back on them.
@@donflatt - Sounds reasonable. I guess we can forgive you that little booboo, being you're from a different country. Thank you for remembering Adam - he didn't deserve to go to what should have been a happy, safe place and run into a horror show. As I said i knew some of the security - one of them I had known for years. Ironically they had told me one time that they loved working Dead shows because "The Deadheads never give you any trouble and they're so polite. Only show you can work and have some poor guy puking on your shoes while apologizing in between heaves". It should be noted my guys worked indoor security and were rarely, if ever, in the parking lot. I knew them well enough to say if they had ever seen anything nasty go down they definitely would have done something. They told me they had heard things and were aware there was some funny business going on but had no concrete proof as yet to back it up. There were problems with other band's fans in the parking lot. Not all music fans were as peaceful and kind as Deadheads. The steroid head idiots were relatively new. After Adam's death it seems to me they were more closely monitored. Obviously they didn't want the bad publicity or a possible lawsuit. Terribly sad and I can't imagine how his parents could bear losing their son. We were all very shocked and saddened that this happened at a Dead show. At least he is never forgotten.
@@valarianne2284 man, ma’am, thank you for reminding me of Adam Katz. That changed the whole feeling of the shows for a long while. It seemed more subdued-sad. Then the NoCamping and NoVendors crap came out of its cage and really dampened the lot. And we got a bunch of young stupid kids on their new drug- Crack! They were at the wrong party!
@@wedjr97 - Yeah, for a while. But then people started to remember - it's YOUR show. You make your own experience. After going to one show with some idiot who spent practically the entire show in the bathroom smoking stupid shit I just was careful who I went with! Even balloons - my husband used to call them hippie crack - can keep you in the parking lot away from the music. Which just got stupid. It's incredibly illogical to go completely across the country to Cali to sit in a parking lot with balloons when all this incredible music is going on just yards away. SMH So - who's fault was it? The idiots or us for getting on their bus? It's NEVER good to get on the wrong bus. Adam Katz I will never forget - and my husband and I probably started in the early 70s. Seems pretty sad that out of all the good memories we have that one period to look back on and shudder. On the other hand more than 50 years of awesome shows and only one bad thing - it's all perspective. We are STILL everywhere! Just not so noticeable as in the past. I hope the younger generation finds their space - the music never really stops, you know? Lately I've been seeing some amazing things The music project where they have musicians all over the world re-interpreting some killer songs. Famous people like Ringo Starr playing with people I never even imagined from every country you can think of. They did The Band's "The Weight" and it was mind blowing. Always Further my friend ;-) And BTW - Adam is always remembered by Deadheads everywhere. There's something to be said for that. We do remember our own.
big mail order dilemma being Canadian 🇨🇦 all to often postmark for summer tour tix fell on Victoria Day Monday and post office was closed for the long weekend ⚡️ meant road tripping to Calais, Maine in order to catch the date stamp on the envelope 🏴☠️ GDTS always came through not only on every single show request but usually seats in the sweet spot under the shed 🎟
Darkest lot id ever seen, aside from the shit show 95 became. Got straight up Mugged by a van full of yellow coats burns.security. Feel lucky they didn’t kill me
whod a think the 80s would have been the good ole days? The last shakedown lot I was in was full of pill and meth heads literally robbing each other. Seemingly just there for the drugs and easy cash. GDTRFB
I was there. Had a ticket one night and got shut out the Dark Star night. Tough ticket and an even tougher lot. The stories of the yellow shirts randomly beating the crap out of Heads was underreported. It was not a good scene by a long stretch.
I was able to catch GD the last 3 yrs when Jerry was with us. Although I was fresh out of high school- those 3 years I went pretty hard following the GD. If I was roaming the lot and came across these folks in this video I would have put them as either narcs or custy's.. ...
There was a bit of folklore - hope it is true - that people "close" to the band did hire someone to look into what happened to that young man, or rather, who did it. Either way, there's a killer (s) out there.
