Teng Yi is the master of shakehand player using short pips in forehand and inverted in backhand. He is good at rally with ball control and touch.

While Teng Yi was ahead of his time, his limitations got exposed by Waldner. Waldner could comfortably loop slow, deep balls to Teng’s backhand without having to worry about Teng replying with a step-back backhand drive (or loop or even punch). These shots by Waldner were left unpunished. All that came back was a block, and a block off of a slow shot is usually not a very effective shot.

As part of a massive overhaul, the Chinese have replaced this kind of passive blocking -- displayed throughout the match by a typical Chinese pimple-rubber fast-attacker Teng Yi in the 1980’s -- with power-added offensive block and aggressive counter-drive. Plus, they fully adopt the smooth rubber for both sides of a peddle to increase their firepower and make the all-out attack style possible to the detriment of European loopers. ☆☆☆☆☆
