This result stunned most of the football world. Not so Albion fans who knew the club were in serious trouble. 4 months later relegation to the 3rd tier duly arrived.
In 88 talbot took over as player manager that same day burrows was sold to Liverpool. By the xmas we were top!!! The training ground was sold, and then when Naylor hodson, goodman and anderson all got injured our glorious board spent nowt!! And sold carlton palmer. We finished 9th in 89. Then in 89/90 we just beat the drop. Then Whyte was sold to leeds for £450 k when leeds offered 800k our board rejected that, so it was settled in the tribunal court. What a joke!!! Talbot took all the flack: when nobody on our board, took any responsibility!. In 10 years we had gone, from being a top 3, first division team to this shambling wreck!
I was there that day and recall it vividly. I've never since seen a team capitulate as we (Albion) did in the second half. There was always a theory that it was deliberate in order to affect certain changes in the club's management. I've often wondered if this was true.
I was there as an 8 year old and I can remember the chants of “sack the board” I had no idea what the board was but I joined in with my dad, up the baggies.
Maybe we should of only sacked Talbot considering Big Sam went on to have a very good managerial career? Well anyway fair play to Woking they deserved the victory in a match where it looked like the Baggies were only fielding 2 defenders god knows where the others got to !!
Strodder Roberts and harbey, were our back ,3 while Bradley played as a makeshift RB. we always lacked pace burgess and raven were played occasionally, but really weren't any improvement ( if any) I used to watch our reserves a lot in those days ( god I must have needed something to do !!😂), we had a great up and coming centre half called Ugo Ehiogu, I met Talbot at the sandwell pub, just before this game and I told him, I actually told him to play Ehiogu, Talbot said he's not quite ready. Talbot got the sack and in the summer ehiogu joined villa for £45k plus sell on clause. ! We missed out again ! RIP MR. Ehiogu he really could/ should have been a albion legend!
