1990 Mazda RX-7 - The Lightweight Rotary you NEED to Drive (POV Binaural Audio)

Driving the 1990 Mazda RX-7 (FC Generation) in some beautifully tight canyons. It took a little while during the drive to trust the car and its limits but once I settled it it was incredible to chuck into corners. Power is low but momentum can be carried due to the lightweight design.

Hey Tedward! This is Erik, the owner. Really good take on the car and exactly how I feel about it. I plan to further refine it in the future with shorter gearing and a little more weight loss. Thinking those two things combined will make a huge difference, especially on a tight canyon like that.
@TedwardDrives
@TedwardDrives Год назад
short gearing would make a world of difference! I was so impressed with the level of grip and eagerness to swap direction. I'd have been much more brave on a track with some run off, and no risk of rocks/cyclists, but you could really just bury your foot, point and shoot. Incredible car you've got here

Hey out of curiosity, what all have you done to it so far as far as mods go? I picked up an ‘86 gxl last year that had been been sitting since the 90s, and haven’t had a chance to get it running yet. I know he mentioned the coil overs, but I’d love to hear what else you’d suggest based off your experience with it

@@kirkeverett295 Just the very basics actually. Decent brake pads, feal coilovers, racing beat cat back exhaust / high flow cat and a few aesthetic items. My goal is to lose another 70 lbs or so, and add an LSD & shorter final drive and I think it'll be much more fun. Its not bad as is. I love cruising around in it. Good luck with your build!

Man, it's too bad the rotary engine never got the time to mature and progress the way piston engines did. Such a unique powertrain.
@Oborowatabinostk
@Oborowatabinostk Год назад
Right!? Ppl forget only 1 company really stuck with them long term, but literally billions have been invested into piston engine design and manufacturing.
@K03sport
@K03sport Год назад
how mature was it supposed to get? it might be "simple" in assembly w/few moving parts, but the engine was at maturity in the Renesis line. longevity (apex seals), fuel economy, and ever increasing emissions regulations all had a hand in its demise. could the 3-rotor have saved the engine in the US (debatable)? no doubts the RX-7 was a great car, but it's temperament wasn't for everyone. BTW, a non-turbo Renesis is a dog at altitude (Denver), smooth, but gutless....
@kevinandrew_
@kevinandrew_ Год назад
@@K03sport? The first combustion engine was in the 1800s and Mazda's first rotary was in the 1960's, yet we're still seeing new tech with piston engines to this day. Obviously with any technology, you get more refinement and improvement over time. Maybe they could've kept making them more reliable, or made them more energy efficient and emissions compliant. But with higher emissions standards, EV mandates coming, and the cost of developing a niche product these days, we'll never know.
@K03sport
@K03sport Год назад
@@kevinandrew_...yes, we are seeing new tech w/piston engines. A lot of that new tech is in cam phasing/timing w/the valves; something the rotary does not have. Other tech involving variable connecting rod length is another area the rotary can't benefit from. Mazda did great things w/the Rotary engine (essentially a 1.3L 6 cyl). The Renesis engine was about as far as a rotary engine was going to go (tech wise w/3 moving parts). If Mazda increased the combustion chamber 0.1L or 0.2L (x6) , what would be the resulting performance/fuel economy/emissions of the now 1.9L and 2.4L 2-rotor engines? How big would the rotors, apex seals, and engine housing have to be to contain the extra energy? The 3-rotor Cosmos engine (20b) was 1.9L-2.0L wasn't it? It made great power, but fuel economy was abysmal. The Cosmos still has a nice (cult) following outside of the US. I saw a program/video where ppl were experimenting w/ultra tiny displacement, single-rotor engines for drone/ hobby aircraft platforms. They reversed the combustion chamber location to the outer wall vs on the rotor. In the reverse rotor, there were 3 spark plugs (60* apart) and the center rotor looked like a peanut 🥜 or solid '8'. Only 2 moving parts. Again we are talking tiny engines, maybe 10"x10 in size. Mazda did experiment w/a small displacement (1.6L) V6 in the MX-3, but it didn't catch on. Making improvements in the wankle/rotory engine is difficult because there are few moving parts. The amount of research necessary compared to incremental gains wasn't worth Mazda's R&D time. good news is you can pick up relatively cheap 80k - 90k mile RX-8s that only need a seal change.
@CrimsonEclipse5
@CrimsonEclipse5 Год назад
It ain't dead yet. Mazda still chasing the rotary dream even as the sun is starting to set on mass production ICEs. If they can get SCCI working properly and reliably in a rotary, and take advantage of all the other emissions tech that has become commonplace since the RX-8 was discontinued, we might see one last rotary sports car. Or maybe a biofuel-optimised one which can carry the torch into the EV future.

Weren't the rotaries prone to lots of maintenance though in general?
@PartikleVT
@PartikleVT Год назад
@@RoxusRemo sports car levels of maintenance, nothing extraordinary. Compared to other cars from their time, less than most cars. They have less moving parts which helps in comparison to bmw's and mercedes that have all sorts of parts breaking all the time. The only "bad" rotary is the renesis and its down to mostly 1. emissions regulations 2. Negligence and 3. Higher standards. In the 80s every car had to be warmed up properly, you couldnt start the car to change the parking spot or you'd ruin your battery etc. things that you need to take in consideration when driving a rotary, but that used to be common practices with cars in general. Today other cars dont need that, so rotaries look "worse". These issues are resolvable though, which is why mazda is launching a rotary engine again and why there are some rotary enthusiasts with a bit of engineering experience driving reliable rotaries.

I don't know if the US specifications are different from the European ones, but this type RX7 delivers 200 HP in Europe. As to the relationship between horsepower and displacement, compared to that of a normal engine: you need to multiply the displacement of a Wankel engine by a factor of 2, to have a good comparison. So 200 HP from 2.6 liters is not that crazy.

I think I know which car Ted will buy next! My father had a 1982 RX-7 that I learned to drive in, which was not a good idea: I didn’t realize how great it was until drove other cars and invariably made comparisons. It was the perfect mix of around town commuter car that was never temperamental, and an absolute blast as a sports car. “Chuckable” is the best way I’d describe the handling. I later bought a 1991 RX-7 convertible, which was even more impressive. The endless smooth responses of the rotary engine were impressive in both RX-7’s. The only downside was not all mechanics understood rotary engines, so I stuck to the dealer for anything more than basic maintenance. Luckily there weren’t any problems with the engine, then again, I kept on top of the maintenance. I never did find the limits of the handling, and I drove it pretty fast. If you can find an RX-7 that’s in good condition, buy it. One thing that used to be a problem on mountain roads when I lived in Southern California was the skateboarders! Numerous times I had to come to a screeching stop to avoid hitting one, and sometimes there were lots of them in a group. You would wind around a blind corner and there they would be, coming right at you.

I can barely get through half of 3rd without things getting sketchy or coming up to traffic. Yet in my FB i would have to shift through every gear just to catch up to freeway speed. NA rotary is really the way to go for a reliable fun daily if you can get a low mile block or rebuild. First engine went at 192k miles 5 years in, picked up a 40k mile block from an auto for $400, mechanic did the swap for free since he wanted to learn about the rotary so i let him keep the blown block. After that i replaced a bad dizzy and never had a problem till the day i sold it to a friend. 2 problems in 5 years, but i also dont beat on my cars. 93k mile FD, block is built for 600+, tuned for 350hp. You dont need anything more than 400 in such a light car on the street imo.

I have an 88 gxl that needs a rebuild but when it ran it was slightly street ported and the suspension was stock. It was extremely fun and reliable non the less it lasted me 3 years as a daily driver and i beat on it a few times motor lasted 160,000 miles

I love RX7s so much, I really do. I desperately wanted one as my first car, and I actually did go see a couple FCs. One was an S4 Turbo and the other an S5 N/A like this but in black. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. Still haven't been able to make it happen yet. Even though I wasn't able to get an RX7, what I *did* manage to get as my first was an MX6; 5MT M-Edition with the KL V6. If you've never driven one and ever get the chance, do it! From the little experience I have driving RX7s, the MX6 felt quite similar despite being FWD. The KL V6 is just as rev-happy as a rotary, but has a lot more mid-range to it. I really miss that car, despite having a "superior" (on paper) Mazdaspeed3 now. I badly want another.

FDs get all the love. And for good reason. But, I've always had a soft spot for these FCs. My Stepfather had a 1990 Mazda MX6 Turbo w/ all the bells and whistles (Adjustable Dampers, etc.) and when I was a kid he goosed it one time, and it blew my mind lol. A few years later, GT came out, and while there were no MX6s in the game, there was something similar (in appearance anyway) in the FC RX7s. The FC was always my starter car in GT. A few more years later, I got my first car, a 1991 Mazda 626. Just always liked the dimensions of these cars. Always had a soft spot for Mazda in general from my upbringing. They've done so well for such a small company in a grueling market. FCs, 2nd gen MR2s, and 4th gen Preludes, Ill always have a thing for.

My dad had 2 FC’s in the 90’s and 2000’s. He wishes he kept them. I never got to see them and there is only 1 or 2 pictures of the cars. He got them as his second and third cars he owned and drove the heck out of them apparently and rebuilt the engines himself since they are so lightweight and simple

My aunt had a 1988 Turbo II that she bought brand new. One of my favorite cars of all time. Almost bought one years ago and probably should have. Now they are almost impossible to find in good condition.

I had a 90 GTUS basically the stripped down version, the lightest rawest version. Manual steering no AC no sun roof manual windows cloth interior, I liked the car a lot but I also had an AE86 at the time I found myself gravitating towards it more. The FC felt heavy and large in comparison also the cabin would get so hot it would become unbearable, then there was the MPG it was horrendous. Honestly you would really have to be giving the car the beans to enjoy it even more so then the AE86. I sold the FC after a couple of years with bad Apex seals(I did disclose in the sale) and I still have the AE86 after 23 years. I also had a couple FDs and the FD is on a whole different level to the FC. I do like the way an NA rotatory revs and was looking forward to the RX8 but they really never fixed my gripes with the 13b in the RX8 so I never bought one. On a side note GTUS are almost impossible to come by anymore since they didn't sell a lot to begin with maybe I should have kept it...
