NASCAR Goes Hollywood The Making Days of Thunder
Days of Thunder was released to the box office on June 27, 1990. Tommy Ellis, Bobby Hamilton, Greg Sacks and Hut Stricklin drove cars in actual NASCAR Winston Cup Series races to provide real racing footage for the movie and offered technical advice while stunt drivers and Tom Cruise drove cars in staged scenes. In the movie Michael Rooker plays the part of fictional character Rowdy Burns who drives the #51 Exxon Chevrolet Lumina and Cary Elwes plays the part of fictional character Russ Wheeler who drives the #18 Hardee's Chevrolet Lumina. Cruise plays the part of fictional character Cole Trickle who drives the #46 'City Chevrolet,' #46 Superflo Motor Oil and the #51 Mello Yello Chevrolet Luminas. Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motorsports provided cars for the movie. City Chevrolet is Hendrick's actual car dealership in Charlotte, NC.

The scene where Robert Duvall is building the car is still one of the best (yet never talked about) scenes in all of car movie history.

Dale Jr talked about this movie in his podcast, many of the story lines are based on real events, some involving Dale Sr. The barn where Harry built the car is still standing on Morrison Plantation Rd in Mooresville, NC and the Piece of property on Lake Norman with the gazebo where Rowdy talks bout building his $10M lake house still has not had a home built on it.

it sucks now. NASCAR forgot about the blue collar fans that made them rich after Earnhardt Sr. died. Brian France took over from his dad too, I don't think he comes from the same back ground as his daddy and granddaddy. most likely a silver spoon fed, spoiled little shit who wants the sport to appeal more to the wine drinking do gooders than the blue collar, beer drinking working man that helped make this sport what it is. plus the rules have changed drastically, the race car duels of the past will never be that way again...

Matt Beeman and Tom cruise met Richmond prior to his death and has mentioned that he based his acting off of Richmond. Cruise is even quoted to have said on set that he was there to play Richmond. Some scenes were based off other drivers. The scene with the rental cars was based off of an incident with Earnhardt Sr and bill Elliot. The meeting with Nascar about them beating and banging was based off a real meeting with rusty Wallace and Dale Sr and Bill France.

JAY IRVING Why would they interview Tom Cruze? You must be thinking of a different movie.

@@jonmartin28 Because Tom Cruise was in fact interviewed for the BTS documentary.....and appears in it multiple times. The real documentary is more than an hour long.

Come to think of it...no CGI in this movie? Also another Hans Zimmer movie that people forget about.

one of the most EARLY 90s things ive ever scene.... . just before the "wave plastic cups" were invented..... just before everyone wore nylon jackets..... that where purple, pink, and green..... . i was born in 94..... but grew up poor.... in NE montana so we were 5 to 10 years behind everything (and still are 5 to 10 years behind the "fad" of today) . so that purple pink green nylon jacket was MY THING back in 4th or 5th grade!!!!!

I’m surprised no one was killed filming this movie. “The hoods going to come off at 200 mph…and told the stunt guys to wear full face helmets.” Cuts to scene of a car with the roof torn open….

What is the name of the song? It starts at ≈1:06, I know it was in the Days of Thunder video game. I can't find any information.

I know what drag racing's like... I can only imagine 200 mph for 10 laps at Daytona, good movie.👍
