Moon was good but not awesome. He wasn't a championship calibre QB. That first series when his knee touched the ground was indicative how Moon responds. He should have hurried up to the line and had the ball snapped before a timeout could have been called for a review. He just lollygagged up to the line and waited.
You miss the Oilers (I do also), buit I miss the Redskins - and I'm a Raiders fan, and my sister was a Redskins fan before the name change - I mean die hard Skins fan- sad to see society made the name change. I'm boycotting this year, I can't deal with the politics I WANT FOOTBALL.
@@jeremiahrose4681 - me too man. I’m a die hard skins fan. It’s hard to swallow honestly. And now, I’ve gotten attached to the “Washington Football Team”, I love the organic simplicity of it. But of course, that will be changed next year to something probably dumb. But I’ll still root for them, always, and they’ll always be the Redskins to me.
Wilber Marshall was an absolute beast for both the Bears and the Redskins. Won two Superbowls, was a 3-time pro bowler and got snubbed for 3 more. Also came in the top 6 in the DPOY award 3 times. He is basically forgotten these days, and travesty that he hasn't been elected to the HOF.
I'm not a Redskins fan but I remember this team. I was like 12 y.o. and I remember just how dominant they were that year. I mean just demolished teams. And I remember how awesome rypien was that mvp season. Definitely one of the best teams ever. They had the number one offense and defense that year .
As a huge Washington fan, I’m not shocked we struggled this game. Houston obviously had a very good squad that year, but we came off an emotional win against the Giants the week before who had beaten us the previous 6 games. This game had let down written all over it and they’re kinda lucky to pull this out.
@@cbod14 - nah. Deion was the man, for sure. He even played for my skins for a bit! But he was mostly flash. He had amazing speed and ball skills. But was not a great tackler. Why I give the edge to Green is he too had amazing speed and ball skills, but he was a missile too, looking for contact.
If I could like this quadruple I would! I am a Cowboys fan and Cowboys and Redskins was a *natural* rivalry. But who can get that worked up over facing “The Commanders!”
KMC Especially since it didn’t cost them the game: if Byner scores on that play...it’s tied, and Elway gets the ball back with enough time on the clock that it would’ve been a surprise if he DIDN’T put the Broncos in position to win.
I used to debate that Byner was the best all around running back in the game at the time, sure Thurman Thomas was more explosive but Byner was a game controlling runner, an excellent receiver and a dominant blocker who could play the H back as well as any tight end, niether Thomas or Craig in their prime could do that
Skins held the Oilers to 267 total yards in this game, Houston's 2nd lowest total of the season; only the great '91 Eagles defense held them to fewer yards (247)
1991 Redskins had all-time greatness all over the place, so complete, efficient, and explosive. 1991 Eagles D was truly legendary, and playing more disciplined made all the difference. But the O? When Jim McMahon was in there the team could pass, but there was nothing to fall back on in regards to the run game. The Oilers could've won this game, but the Eagles pummeled the Oilers in the dome.
I can remember watching this game on tv. Was rooting for the oilers. The Atmosphere in the DMV was crazy when this team played this season. You have no idea.
After Howfield missed the would-be game winning kick, the camera pans to Pardee and you can read his lips " I want him fired". I remember watching this game live and noticed it when it happened. Sure enough, Howfield was shown the door the next day.
I remember him crying. I felt bad for the guy, but I was 11 at the time and was so crushed they lost this game. The Oilers brought Al Del Greco in as their new kicker who was with them for a long time after.
Imagine having a multiple pro bowl Tackle limping off the field and his replacement,,, a hall of famer . Jacoby and Grimm. The Redskins had even more depth on that team, Ray Brown, future pro bowler was on the bench, and also Ed Simmons who I doubt went to a pro bowl but was one hell of a great lineman. What a solid team with solid depth not just on the O-Line but in all phases of the game.
My brother and I were at this game, he’s a lifelong Oilers fan, when DG picked Moon off in OT I swear my brother almost cried hanahahaha memories HTTR4LIFE
Well deserved. If Howfield makes that kick, the Oilers host Denver in the divisional (they had beaten them 42-14 in the regular season at home) and likely get Buffalo in the AFC title game.
This is classic Oilers. Their M.O. Outplayed Washington, but couldn't do the little things. Like make clutch FG's. Or run for key first downs. I remember distinctly flipping between this game and the 49ers/Falcons game that ended with Michael Haynes catching the Hail Mary that basically kept the 49ers out of the playoffs. Two low scoring, but intense games. Used to be that was okay. Now you hardly ever see them anymore.
The Oilers did NOT outplay the Redskins. The Redskins rushed 35 times for 154 yards (4.4 avg) while the Oilers rushed 16 times for only 25 yards (1.5 avg) Not even close! The Redskins also dominated time of possession and 3rd down conversations. The only reason Washington didn't blow the Oilers out was because of self destructive turnovers.
I love the intro! I'm pretty sure the song is from the Civil War movie "Glory"!?!? The 1991 Redskins were so damn good! Amazing the Oilers of that era never so much made it to a conference title game.....
I watched this season it was one of are best season ever man i wish we would of went 16 and 0 and won but I'll take 14 @ 2 to win the championship this was a good year the bulls one and so did the skins my two favorite teams
Q grandes equipos soy Vaquero y deportivamente no los quería pero reconocer a los grandes rivales y q lástima q la mierda acabo con estás grandes franquicias 😔🏉
I was at this game. A 14 year old version of me is somewhere in that goal line crowd watching the Oilers kicker miss that gimme field goal. I remember going ape**** when he missed. Incredible game.
My first football game was New England at Buffalo this same day. I've never seen this game before and didn't know anything about it. The Oilers were a chip shot FG away from toppling the mighty 91 Redskins. WOW.
What about Rob? It looks like you’re pointing to your own name. Houston always choked. Never got passed the second round with the most talented team in football. Even their punter was the league leader that year. I loved that team but they always let you down. Capers, Kubiak and O’Brian are still letting us down. The last game the Texans played was a franchise worst blowout rout loss to Kansas City.
@@jamesroberts1810 I agree but, he's suppose to finish adleast one or two those games himself, with or without the defense holding leads. And Oilers did have Huge leads....too.
The Texans name is just so...bland and the uniforms are as well, but ultimately the blame is, of course, the ownership of the Titans. For example, back in 2018, the Texans threw that idea out there of using the uniforms as a throwback and the Titans organization said, "That's a hard no." At least the Browns got to use their name again after the Ravens were formed.
I think almost any NFL fan in those days knew that: 1. Howfield would miss that field goal and 2. Moon would probably throw an interception in OT. Whenever there was a big play to be made, whether it was a score or a first down on offense, a big stop on defense, or a big kick, those Oilers teams never got it done. They had no clutch gene at all.
2:16:30 Oilers miss a chip shot FG like that, you knew it was destiny in the making. And look at the fans going wild in the stands Dan Snyder, this how it used to be and why u need to go...
And good luck blending in in Europe, if u don't have the social skills/sophistication to be accepted in America despite ur wealth then you definitely will be ostracized in the UK who culturally are on a whole nother level. Lame ass can't even bag a side chick without a lawsuit but you got big cash big cars and yachts and still the answer is no....
Gibbs did a great job coaching around his short comings and putting him in situations where he could thrive... its why he wasn't good with other coaches. It actually took Gibbs a few seasons to be able to create the ideal situation for Rypien to thrive in. Mark had the best deep ball I have ever seen but he was crappy in the redzone. Gibbs would run a lot and force 8 or 9 into the box then unleash the deep ball to avoid the redzone.

And some idiot named Ian Howfield ruined it for the Oilers by missing a field goal that could have won it for them that day. Oh and btw, the Oilers waived him the next day as a result of that botched FG and was immediately replaced by highly accurate PK Al Del Greco. If only the Oilers had signed Big Al at the beginning of that season. Hmmmm......
