The Bloomington Kennedy kid -with a lot of help from Harpo- truly bailed out the kid from Highland Park on that 1-3-1 double play. Thanks again for the video, I had entirely forgotten Gald-mans double was all hustle and the perfect bunt from Knobby that moved him over to 3rd. Eugene Larkin from Columbia U will live forever in Minnesota professional athletics infamy!

Best two games I ever attended at the old HHH Metrodome, Game 6 & Game 7 1991 World Series. My ears ring to this day because of this game. I remember high-fiving Kirby when he came out of the stadium, couldn’t believe he signed my baseball, we were all shouting, “YEAH!” Crowd chanting KIR-BY! KIR-BY! Twincredible!

Greatest world series of all time, by far!
@thefrase7884
@thefrase7884 2 года назад
Nah…..1975 by far. This was great but not the greatest. Your argument would be valid if each team would have won one on the other’s field. Whenever it goes 7 and the home team wins all it can’t be anything more than “good”. Although had the Braves won it would be valid. How the hell could Lonnie Smith be fooled by that decoy?
@weaslysnipes
@weaslysnipes 2 года назад
@@thefrase7884 It's not even close. 1975 was a great series and similar to 91 in a lot of ways. Both series had 5 one-run games, including one-run 6th and 7th games. Both had multiple extra-inning games and dramatic walk-off home runs. Both had iconic performances that define HOF careers (Fisk HR, Kirby HR, Morris Game 7). Why 1991 wins: - Two worst to first teams. Two fan bases with no expectations of being where they were revelling in the rapture of World Series baseball. - In 1991, the home team won every game which means the close games are even closer. There were four walk-offs in 1991 (and a fifth game with a winning home run to break a tie in the bottom of the eighth). 1975 had a lot of games decided in the top of the 9th with only two walk-offs. It's not as exciting to have a closer close it out and when they happen on the road, you don't get the fans going insane, you get the quiet stadium. Quiet stadium is nice but a walk-off at home is the loudest a stadium gets. Over half the games ended that way in 1991. - The swings of 1991 were great. The seven games in 1975 went Red Sox, Reds, Reds, Red Sox, Reds, Red Sox, Reds. It is definitely fun to go back and forth like that but consider 1991 for comparison: the Twins went up two games to none and felt like they were dominating. The Braves came back and walked off 3 and 4 before romping in Game 5. It felt inevitable they would win it all. Then the Twins walk off 6 and 7 to win. Can't beat those mood swings for fans. Despair to joy and back again. - 1991 had three-extra inning games (Games 3, 6 and 7) to two in 1975 (Games 3 and 6). Obviously ending with two extra-inning games trumps just Game 6. And Game 3 was way more momentous in 1991. The game went 12 innings with the Twins knowing they were a run away from 3-0 and Atlanta desperate to steal a game. That's got more juice than a series tied 1-1. - Both teams may have had 5 one run games but in 1975, Game 4 was about as lame of a one-run game as you get. All scoring was done by the 4th and the Reds never really mounted a serious rally after. They had a few singles and walks but never got a runner past second base. In 1991, all five one-run games involved ties broken in the home team's last at-bat. Games 3 and 4 involved a play at the plate to end the game (there may be nothing more exciting in baseball than a play at the plate to decide the game). Those are the "sitting on the edge of your seat" games. - The two Game 6s are pretty identical. Fisk's waving and Bernie Carbo hitting a game-tying three run homer off the bench in the bottom of the 8th probably pushes 1975 above 1991 (though Kirby's catch makes a solid argument against) in terms of dramatics. But 91 wins because of what happened in Game 7. A Game 6 that forces a Game 7 that you lose is nice and all but it just postponed the inevitable. A Game 6 nailbiter that leads to a Game 7 win is way more important because losing that Game 6 means you don't get that Championship. - And 1991 has a way better Game 7 - if Game 7 isn't your best game, that's a problem. 1975's Game 7 was fine, with the Reds scoring the winning run in the top of the 9th but 1991 Game 7 is one of the best world series games of all time, an extra-inning walk off to cap off the greatest postseason pitching duel. The only competitors are Mazeroski's home run, the Cardinals-Rangers Game 6, the Cubs-Indians Game 7, and Kirk Gibson's walk off. That's good company. Ridiculous to claim 1975 is the best World Series ever. The only reason people say that is because of the iconic Fisk waving moment and because it involved the Red Sox. In every other way, 1991 is better.

I’d say Top 5 since 1990. You have AZ/NY 01, CLE/FL 95, CHI/CLE 16 and TOR/PHI 93. Is probably put this one 2nd after 2001.
@weaslysnipes
@weaslysnipes Год назад
@@ChrisBrown-vf7mu 2001 is a better argument than 1975. The NY post-9/11 angle is interesting, though it’s kind of in conflict with the Evil Empire narrative of the Yankees dominating the late 90s early 2000s. Very conflicted for non-fan base fans. But it’s at least on a par with two-worst-to-first teams. 2001 also has the better name brands competing. The Braves would become an elite team but were not yet and the Twins had Kirby but few other brand name guys recognizable to all fans. 01 brings star power. The Yankees had Jeter and Clemens and Rivera but the Diamondbacks brought Johnson and Schilling to the picture. That level of starting pitching makes it exciting. The games are interesting. Games 1 and 6 were blowouts. Game 2 ended 4-0 but was a close game for much of it. Game 3 is also close and has some added drama as the Yankees tried to stave off going down 3-0. And of course Games 4, 5 and 7 were blown save games with the home team winning, which is always exciting. It’s actually super close to 1991. 91 has four walk-offs and 01 has three. 91 has one other super close game while 01 has two. So it's 5 close games with a walk-off advantage to 1991. In the end, I prefer 1991 (as a Twins fan I should but I also think that as a trying-to-stay-impartial-person I do too) because of the true excellence and high stakes of Games 6 and 7 and the play-at-the-plate finishes to Games 3 and 4*. That said, thinking 2001 is better is totally excusable, particularly if you’re looking for compelling national narrative as a factor. * Walkoff HRs are great but plays at the plate are even better. That said, I'm not sure I'd feel the same today since you'd have a replay review to dilute the drama. The key to 1991 is that the decision was immediate and the umpires got it right each time. Put that same series in 2021 and it's not as great because of replay.

Couple things- I was a Brewers fan living in northern WI, so I was in the middle of Twins fever in '87 and '91, so now as a grown-up baseball fan I can appreciate what the Twins pulled off for their two World Series titles. Knowing how much of a pest Knoblauch was at the plate, and how great of a 2nd baseman he was then, it's hard to grasp what went wrong in his career getting the Yips. Finally, I've always loved the cool, almost nonchalance of some umps when they were behind the plate through the 80's & 90's.
