1992-2000 Volvo P80 (850, S70, V70, C70): Factory stereo displays "OFF" or "CODE"

In this video, I discuss how to unlock the factory stereo. If the battery is unplugged (or power is otherwise disrupted from the stereo), the stereo will require a code before you can use it again. If you input the wrong code 3 times in a row, you will be locked out and the display will say "OFF" whenever you try to power up the stereo. If this happens, you will need to keep the stereo powered up (displaying "OFF") with the ignition switch in position II (sometimes position I will work) for 3 hours. I like to keep a battery charger hooked up to prevent the battery from draining down, since the vehicle's electronics will be powered up for several hours. After the timeout period has passed (typically 2.5 to 3 hours), the stereo display will switch to "CODE" and you will then be able to input the code. If you do not have the code, you will need to contact a Volvo dealer to get this code. My local dealer was happy to supply me with the code for free, and I was on the phone for only a few minutes.

If you do not know your Volvo's radio code, go to this link and provide the VIN for your car. This will work unless the stereo has been replaced w/ a different unit on your car. volvo.custhelp.com/app/webforms/RadioCode

It took about 2 hours then the CODE came up. Thanks for the video and it worked 👍. I am from Sweden and thanksful that videos like you do works and help many with this problem.

Excellent video and you win the Nobel prize for your contribution to my daughter's addiction to her Arctic Monkey's cd. This worked. And I left it with the key in position 1 (NOT TWO) for approximately 1 hour and 'bam' the readout changed from 'off' to 'code' allowing me to re-enter the correct code. Thanks again.

Glad that the video helped! On some cars it works in position I, but on others you have to leave it in position II. Haven't figured out a rhyme or reason as to why that is. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!

Do you need to have a battery charger into the vehicle for this or does it work without? How much volts does it take from the battery for this process? And do I need to have it on for several hours straight? Or can I continue with the process tomorrow for example? Thank you.

The CD Changer was an option on these cars, the stereo had the capability regardless of whether the car had the changer or not.

But the manual said turn it to position 1 is there any different? My is 2002 Volvo c70

NobleGhost NS it is hit and miss. You can try in position 1 but it doesn’t always work. If that fails try leaving it in position 2. I’ve had it go either way and I haven’t found a rhyme or reason why this is the case.

I left my car on the number 2 for 2 hours and sure enough l got the word code to show but now what happens is what ever code l do put in l get nothing but the word code it doesn't even blink?

I'm having an issue with unlocking my factory radio I've called the dealership and they will not give me the code because we bought it and cannot get it registered without it to pass smog but then the radio locked up said off and now I can't afford to let it sit there for 2 hours is there another way to get it done without a battery charger or a house to do it at

You can jump the battery with another vehicle, but unfortunately the wait time is built into the radio - which is what they considered a security feature. You can get the radio code online, provided the radio is the one that came with the vehicle when it was new. If I change out the head unit while it’s in off will it show off on the new one ?

Anytime the head unit displays “off” it will stay locked out until you go through the timeout period and enter the passcode. A different unit plugged into the same car may or may not say off - it all depends on if the head unit had gotten locked out prior to being removed from the donor vehicle. Anytime the battery power is interrupted the head unit will request a passcode.

You only need to keep it on 2 hours if you got message "off" Message "code" means that you can type the code 3 times before you get the off message

I've had some go from "off" to "code" in two hours, and others where it took closer to 3 hours. And also, as I put down in the video description (not sure if you can see this on a mobile device?), it also varies between having the ignition switch in position I or position II. I haven't found a rhyme or reason why this varies.

I've never seen a Volvo stereo say "clear". What model Volvo do you have, and is there a model number on the radio (like SC-816)? Also, are you in the US?

I talked about what you need to do in the event the radio says 'off' at the beginning of the video. The ignition switch needs to stay in the 1 or 2 position for several hours (2.5 to 3hrs). Do not touch the stereo or cycle the ignition in this time period. I recommend plugging a battery charger on to the battery to prevent the battery from draining down during this period. Once you have passed the 3hr time period, the radio should go from saying "off" to "code". From here you can input the code for your stereo, and it should turn on.

I’ve had it take up to 3hrs to unlock in some cases. Pretty ridiculous measures for making a factory head unit theft resistant. Important to keep a battery charger on for the duration!

@@anaitullahazizi3123 If you’re looking at a factory head unit, get one from a wrecking yard or source one out from someone on a Volvo forum. Be sure to get the VIN from the vehicle it came from so you could use the link in the video description to retrieve the PIN code to activate it.

If the radio says "off", you will need to go through the process of resetting your radio by following these steps: Turn the key to the accessory mode (usually the 1st position in the ignition, just one click of the key) Turn the exterior and interior lights,as well as heat or air conditioning offMake sure the radio has power, so it will read "OFF"Leave the car in this state for approximately 2-3 hours and the radio will go from "OFF" to "code" (you cannot drive the car)Enter the code
