Yes I do miss those early 90s Huskies teams as a Buckeyes fan... Somebody call it lame but my favorite animal is the husky dog So I took a liking to the Washington Huskies and still do like them... but man what the hell happened to the pac-12
He did, he was just on a better team that was so deep and Howard while on a great team with depth just had incredible stats and highlights that got the Wolverines that far. The better team won that game as was the case the following year.
Speaking as a Michigan fan The Hukies are one of the best teams i have seen Better match ups would have been Cal Bears vs Michigan and Miami vs Washington for the title
That would've been the matchup had there been the BCS at that point. Had it been a 4 team playoff it would've been Michigan vs Miami and Washington vs Florida. The Hurricanes & Huskies split the National Championship just like Michigan did in 97 with Nebraska and we'll never know who would've won had they met.
Got to watch that team develop over the years! My dad was a season ticket holder from 1986-2017…that team was loaded! Nipper Kaufman was a freshman and 3rd or 4th string! Washington was going through Cali annually a grabbing the best players….Hobert took money from a booster…the NCAA allowed the PAC-10 to levy basically a death penalty and the rest is history.
Hobert's loan wasn’t even against the rules, they just wanted to railroad Washington because they were buttmad about their dominance. Same reason why they unloaded on USC because everyone was jealous of Pete Carroll's epic run
Lol they did meet a year later too but yeah, and finally it was for the National Title. In all three cases the better team won the game and the team that lost was still a solid squad.
The better team won, such was the case the next season too, and in the 2023 National Championship Game. This is a good sporadic series that should be fun once Washington joins the Big Ten. Several close games in home-and-home seasons and both teams have success against each other in major Bowls.
@@charleswachunas646 Not even close. In 1991 UW gave up an average of 9.5 points per game and had 2 shutouts. In 2002 OSU gave up 13 points per game and didn't have any shutouts.
@@AaronStark1993 well true that Huskies defense was just beast mode all the way I suppose it wasn't their fault that the Huskies defense didn't get the face one of the most balanced and dangerous offenses ever with the 2002 Hurricanes team The 2002 Buckeyes defense did the near impossible and kept Miami Florida from breaking the game wide open plus that amazing play by Maurice Clarett to get the ball back after an interception I do like quantitative analysis but really the best mark of an offense or defense is how many quality teams they are able to beat
@@AaronStark1993 the numbers can get blown the heck out sometimes in college football championships and big bowls... How did Clemson first beat Alabama five years ago? and Ohio State beat Alabama 6 years ago... But Alabama doesn't even win the SEC and I saw it coming before it happened... they're like yeah we'll just win the national championship at a four seed hahaha... Too much reliance on the strong numbers teams post... well you come to January and you're like what happened why do muh favorite team that was supposed to win it all lost by three or more touchdowns
@@andyraphael There is a big difference between the two awards that the titles don't really reflect. The Huskies received the votes of coaches which - I'm sure - meant a lot more to Don James than the AP votes of sports writers who chose Miami. To be recognized by your peers means so much more. The AP poll follows the hype.
Watching how good Defense played at Washington in this game I can see with their Coach Don James instilled in them & why Nick Saban said he was his mentor & now that Coach Saban has retired from Bama .
9:30 You cannot convince me that Washington made that first extra point lol it’s hard to tell with the camera quality from early 90s but I watched it frame-by-frame like 10 times and you can see the ball at the top of the crossbar, then it disappears and seems to change direction landing nearly on the end line in the back of the end zone. I think the ball hit the cross bar and went straight down (under, not over) the cross bar. didn’t matter in the end but that’s a big stage to miss something like that as refs.
@@_________. I’ve paused frame by frame and I promise you the ball never crosses over the back of the bottom crossbar. It hits it and bounces straight down. Look where the ball lands and tell me how physics can explain the ball going through. It lands on the end line. If it went through it would land a few yards behind the end line even if it barely went in. But at the end of the day it was like 30 years ago so who really cares either way 🤷🏻♂️
@@blpanthers00 you can see at least half the ball over the bar and then see that ball land. It would be impossible for it to go under after going that far through and landing where it did.
The announcers question it when it happens.. communication during a football game before the year 2000 was a lot different. There weren’t replays and rules analysts looking at every play under a scope. One ref put his arms up, other one looked at him and followed. The ball would be defying physics if it went in then landed on the back line of the end zone. THE BALL GOES STRAIGHT DOWN. Watch it for yourself lol don’t look at where the ball ends up when the guy picks it up, because it bounces toward the stands, but the first place the ball hits the ground is literally on the back line of the end zone. That wouldn’t be possible if the kick was good lmao
It all ended wit tha HUSKIES @ tha ROSE BOWL wit Mario Bailey hit'N tha hiesman pose...that HUSKIES squad was loaded on both sides...HOWARD was DAT DUDE tho...
This game taught Michigan how to compete on the big stage in a changing college football environment. Speed was what beat them in this game. The very next year they came back with one of the fastest teams in the game and the very same Washington team couldn't keep up.
I was at both those games. The second year the field was a mess. No body had a speed advantage. They wouldn't let us park on the golf course because it had rained earlier that week. Dawgs were running the ball with the fullbacks real well, then started throwing it - not well. Not sure why they changed. Our tail back couldn't get any traction. It was a hard fought game right down to the end. Made for a long drive home. Keep beating the buckeyes !!!
Wasn't the same Washington team. They lost a lot of starters to the NFL including Outland Trophy winner Steve Emtman and their whole defensive line. The 1991 Huskies gave up 108 total points in 12 games (9.2 pts per game). And only 54 pts were scored on their starting defense. The rest of the pts came against their second and third teamers because the 1991 team was blowing teams out so bad that usually midway through the 3rd qtr they would pull most of their starters. The 1991 Huskies scored 42 pts per game while giving up 9.2 pts a game. In fact, Washington was ahead of Michigan 34-7 in the 1992 Rose Bowl when Michigan scored their other touchdown late in the game (garbage time) on a Tyrone Wheatley long run against mostly second teamers on the Huskies defense. The Huskies defense the following year wasn't near as good as the 1991 team.
@@tommurphy2746 Agreed. It wasn’t the same in 92 as it was in 91. In the 91 game Michigan didn’t have there full team and still played Washington to a stand still until damn near halftime. If Michigan has a healthy Derrick Alexander then Washington can’t sit on Des the way they did. I’m not saying Michigan wins that game because the Huskies were special. I’m just saying it would’ve been a bit more competitive and I thought the game was a good lesson for Blue in terms of learning what’s needed to be at the upper echelon of the sport at the time.
Brunnel played like shit in the 4th quarter, and Michigan came from behind to win. Nail biter . I was there. Year before, Michigan had their ass handed to them. Wheatlys td just made the score look less lop sided. Michigan had good teams both years, but the first year they were outclassed. I was there, too. Looks like Michigan's back. Looks like we're not ! Just continue to beat the damn buckeyes !!!! Go DAWGS !
oh that's right. Teams win the national championship 4-5 years in a row.......says no one but Alabama. There's a bunch of teams that don't even have 1 NATTY ........The best example is the costume clad pretenders south of Seattle that PROUDLY display the amount of Nattys they have right on their 50 yard line. And if you asked me now if I would take losing the next 2 seasons bowl games for a Championship, HELL Ya i would.
Doesn’t matter, Michigan thrashed them in the 4th quarter for the win. And beat them years later in Ann Arbor. Michigan al the way. Tyrone Wheatley left cleat marks on your defenders helmets and jerseys,
@@TheConchologist, You’re comparing teams/games between 1992 and 2002 when Michigan “thumped” Washington? 😂 BTW, Huskies defeated Michigan in 2001 at home!
