Several years ago I was rebuilding the engine for my 94 RM250. The bike was at my buddies place. We split the cases and removed all but the bearings. Put the two halves on a baking sheet and put it in the oven. The intent was to warm up the cases to easily pull the bearings out. What happened was, we went in the living room and proceeded to smoke a bunch of weed. About 45 minutes later we hear "CLUNK... CLUNK CLUNK." And we bust out laughing because we realize that we forgot about the engine. The CLUNK was the bearings just falling out. Easiest bearing removal ever. 😁

Lol, I have heated cases to install bearings , and remove them.. but not for 45min. Lol. Glad it went well for you.. I was worried you were going to say you warped the cases and had to use JB weld to seal them…. Lol Thanks for the comment and for watching

That's quite a surprise. Inside the engine it looks in very good condition. Not what you expect looking at the outside. That's a great win, and money saving. 👌

I think it will be an easy fix to clean up the cases. We have an upcoming video showing the clean up and repairs.

You never know what actually needs to be repaired, replaced or restored until you've taken the bike ALL apart...it's ALWAYS way more than you think when you buy a project. 😮 But the feeling you get when its all finished and it starts... Undescribable...until you have taken a POS and turned it into a polished gem...you don't know the feeling. I'm jus say'n, Flodaddy ❤

Silicone and JB Weld are great products for their intended purposes. Not so much in this case🤔 looking forward to seeing the progress on this build.

great video. I might have tried a small wood chisel to see if I could get the jbweld to pop off that case. Also for removing the case bearings, if you heat the case in the oven to about 200F or 93C, the bearings will pretty much just fall out. It is just so much gentler on the case. A crank puller/pusher is also a really great tool to have.

A wood chisel probably would have worked really good.. I was scared of what was actually hidden under it personally. If it was welded or who knows.. I actually had a few viewers leave comments saying you can heat jb weld and then remove it like nothing.. I will give that a try at some point if I ever have to do that again. I have heated cases in the past and it works pretty good. I was worried what that jb weld stuff was and if it caught fire in the oven my Girlfriend might have killed me lol.. Thanks a lot for watching by the video and the comment. Hopefully you will like the rest of the project 93 series.

You can get plastic pry bars that work well for getting cases the last bit apart without marring the surface with metal. Use heat when removing the crank like that if you don't have a press. If you do any welding on cases or anything else definitely check for flatness before assembly because the welding will warp most things.
@Dirtbikerepair
@Dirtbikerepair 4 месяца назад
Thanks a lot for the comment and for watching. Honestly I have not seen plastic pry bars. I will keep my eye out for some. I would like to check them out and see how they feel and how they work

I Cringe and Jump up and down in my chair when i see peeps prying cases with Screwdrivers. They are for screws!! Use wedges and case splitters/removers. That little edge is a small sealing surface. My 2 pennies. Keep up the great job.

Like your videos , next time you have any Jb weld and you want to remove it heat it up with a little propane torch or map gas torch. Once you heat it up and it browns it comes off easy.
@Dirtbikerepair

That’s actually really good info to know, I honestly haven’t ran into a lot of situations where people would have used the amount that was on this poor bike. I will definitely try that next time for sure. Honestly though I hope I never have to lol Thanks a lot for the comment and for watching the video

HEAT up everything when removing bearings and seals. They come out easily. I use a little propane torch, heat gun to install if painted. Heat is your Friend! No Wacking!!!

I have baked them in an oven in the past.. but the cases were covered in what I’m assuming is jb weld. I didn’t know how it would make my house smell. Lol. And how well it would go over with my girlfriend…. Lol Thanks for the comment and for watching

If it is JB weld. Just heat it up until it is soft with a heat gun. Peels right off after.

I actually have never heard that.. I already have it all removed or I would have loved to try it. Thanks for the tip, hopefully I never need to use it though… lol. Thanks for watching and hope you like the rest of the project 93 build series.

This motor has likely been butchered by several different owners or "mechanics". The problem with this motor as with most amateur built motors is flatness (among a hundred other things, lol). Most backyard types don't know or don't want to spend the money or time to make sure the cases/cylinder surfaces are flat hence the rtv goop or in worst case situations like this, epoxy. Properly done, the case haves and all other mating parts need to be checked for flatness and if out of spec from warpage or other things they need to be lightly machined or use a flat plate with sandpaper. In some cases you cant go to far or then you will run into tolerance issues with gears and such. There are people out there that are constantly using sealant on gaskets (2vintage) where it isn't required unless the service manual specifically calls for it. If your surfaces are flat you should run your gaskets dry. In cases like a clutch cover or other parts that will likely be pulled apart frequently, I use a thin coat of grease on the gasket.
@Dirtbikerepair
@Dirtbikerepair 4 месяца назад
I totally agree that some people don’t fully understand about having a flat mating surface. In the engine assembly video I will take time to cover preparing cases or simply do a full video on the topic. I also am a big fan of using a small amount of grease on gaskets Thanks again for the comment and for watching the video. I cover flatness briefly on the 2001 CR125 video I have on the channel

Hey any advice for a piston ring getting caught on the cylinder during install? I’m having a hard time getting the cylinder to slide on the piston, past the ring, keeping it top dead center sliding it on, the ring is in the way
@Dirtbikerepair
@Dirtbikerepair 4 месяца назад
You need to collapse the ring in the right spot on the piston... its tricky and they do make a tool to help although i have never used one. There is a small little indent where the ring ends need to meet on the piston it sounds like maybe in your situation it might have moved a little bit and is not fully in the right spot. I Think I show this in the cr125 video i posted not long ago i will find a link so you can check it out... might help
