1993 Sugar Bowl - Alabama Crimson Tide (#2) vs Miami Huricanes (#1)

This was the culmination of a perfect regular season for Alabama. Yet they faced a seemingly insurmountable task in taking on the Miami Hurricanes at the peek of their dynasty run. But looks can be deceiving. Lead by head coach Gene Stallings, protege of the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant, legacy and destiny was on the side of the Crimson Tide. Alabama throttled the Miami Hurricanes from start to finish, taking every punch they threw and throwing back twice as hard. In the end the Alabama Crimson Tide shocked the world and toppled the Hurricanes and claimed yet another National Championship.

I've watched a lot of football in my 61 years, but George Teague running down that Miami receiver and taking the ball away from him. Ive never seen anything like that, either before that game, or since then. The way Teague turned on the after burners and caught up to that guy, and then stole the ball from him ? That was absolutely incredible.

Teague later admitted he was out of position on that play and he knew if he didn't do something he was going to be in big trouble later, so he said he ran the fastest he's ever ran to make up for it 😂

Well, a lot of people disrespected Alabama. For instance, Lee Corso said we were "no better than an average high school team." There was a LOT of trash talking about us that got laid to rest that night. This was one of the best games I have ever attended.

There are some amazing stories in the comments for this game. I encourage anyone that's here for the first time to read some of them. The stories are just as entertaining and meaningful as the game. Just shows that the tradition of Alabama football runs so deep in our community. It's the time we spend with our dads, mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles, cousins and friends at these games that makes these moments so special. That and as we all know here, Alabama has always been and will always be one of the most exciting football programs to be a part of. Thank you all for sharing. RTR

I was there in the late 70's when Bama played PSU two years in a row and had the "Goal line stand" and won them both but was too young to appreciate how truly great it was. I wasn't there for this game but I was old enough to appreciate how well Bama played and was coached, Miama was clearly out coached and out played. Miami made fun of Bama and thought they had it won before they even played the game but game dominated and Gino said " the second half was just a blur to him"! There was one big sportscaster (can't remember his name) who was sure Ala could not withstand the "physical" Miami Team. Let, me tell you, Ala took Miami apart! @@duaneholcomb8408 I think you're being too simplstic I am not saying that "the best Pro should have won the Heisman." As great a pro as he became, Emmitt Smith never was the best player in College during his 3 years... Finished 9th in Heisman voting as a FR (Tim Brown*), wasn't in top 10 as So (Barry Sanders), and 7th as JR (Andre Ware). Smith skipped in Sr year (Ty Detmer won in '90). Smith never lead the nation in rushing, not close really... in '93 Marshal Faulk lead the nation in Rushing and passed the eyeall test, while Torretta wasn't even the best QB his year (Drew Bledsoe) and the eyeball test clearly said Gino was a "good" QB on a loaded team.... Faulk's RB stats were much better than Torretta's QB stats. Many Voters just thought Faulk was the beneficiary of "weak competition" .. I point out Faulk's HOF NFL career to show how wrong it was to make that assuption. There is a reason Gino Torretta makes almost every list of "10 least deserving Heisman Winners" ... Finally * you could make a case that Thurman Thomas was more deserving than Tim Brown in '87 (had better numbers than FR Smith as well), but Brown was an NFL HOFer so you can't knock his talent. Brown benefited from Notre Dame name like Torretta benefited from Miami name and Faulk was punished for San Diego St's low profile. Have a great day.

That penalty call at 51:28 was completely ridiculous. An unsportsmanlike penalty against Bama vs those churlish, uber arrogant Miami hurricanes is the ultimate irony. Miami re-invented poor sportsmanship to the point where they had to change the rules just to hinder their smack talking. That ref should have been punched.

I know this is 4 years too late BUT, here you were rightfully busting Miami's balls over their style of play....correctly calling it poor sportsmanship....and then you took the low road and did a Miami, by declaring the Referee should have been punched lol. Hopefully you decided which side of sportsmanship you were going to stand on since then.

I would have to disagree. Most consider the 92 defense the best of all time in college football. Curry and Copeland had 10 sacks each. And the 92 defense usually had very little help from their offense. No team ever depended on a defense more than the 92 bama squad, and no defense ever delivered so much as the bama 92 squad.

2012 was a great D for bama, but the offense was a hell of a lot better too. And I know this has nothing to do with the post, but I think McCarron should have been the #1 qb picked in the 2014 draft. He won 2 natl titles, played against the top teams in the biggest games and only lost 3 games. He set all kinds of passing records at bama. But I guess he wasn't flashy enough for the owners to pick him higher. There is no way in hell Bridgewater is better than AJ. Teddy did not play against elite competition in college. I just had to get that out of my system.

The '92 Defense never gave up 300 plus yards rushing to any team, but the 2011 Defense did. Georgia Southern run the wishbone Offense and racked up over 350 yards rushing. The '92 Defense faced 2 teams that run the wishbone Offense and shut their running game down.

Jeremy Forczyk For Miami, that Sugar Bowl WAS a (potential) national title game. Oklahoma beat #1 Penn State, and Miami was #2. If Miami had won, they would have had an identical record to Oklahoma, but they had beaten the Sooners soundly in Norman earlier in the season. They were higher ranked AND had won the head to head match-up. So, with everything to play for, they went out and... got beat like they stole something by the Vols, lol.
@jfa-px3mu
@jfa-px3mu 9 лет назад
frzzlfry66 Ok, to be honest with you I'm not old enough to know that, but I'm a huge football fan, so I knew they beat OU and that OU won the title that year, but I didn't make the connection between them being No.2 and a shot at the title. I guess that's what happens when you grow up in the BCS era
@jfa-px3mu
@jfa-px3mu 9 лет назад
frzzlfry66 And of course the 30 for 30 documentaries on Miami skipped the Bama and Tennessee losses, because those losses were too decisive to make any excuses. The only losses they talked about were Penn St. in the Fiesta Bowl and Notre Dame in 1988, because those losses were close enough for them to make excuses. That show acted like Miami was unbeatable

Charlie Foxtrot I respectfully disagree...Miami was never the same after this game. That aura of invincibility was done after this game, particularly after Teague stripped Thomas in the 3rd quarter. Probation did not come until 1995.

Tim Marsh Really Tim? Cause I distinctly remember the Canes dominating the early years of the 21st Century and flooding the NFL with draft picks. The 2001 Canes had more future pro-bowlers on their two deep than any team in NCAA History.
@tmarsh0307
@tmarsh0307 10 лет назад
Charlie Foxtrot From 1993-1999 Miami never came close to playing for a National Championship. They nearly derailed Nebraska in 1994, which was probably their best team during that stretch. 2000-2003, yes Miami had a run that resembled their dominance, but only one National Championship in that stretch. I would not call that a dynasty any more than I would call Gene Stallings' 4-year stretch (1991-94) a dynasty, even though Bama won 45 games and a National Championship. Yes, Miami's run 1983-1992 was a dynasty. They were dominant. The games they lost came with teams playing well above their head, and making unbelievable plays. However, it ended that night, with that game, particularly Teague's incredible play. The dominance was over and teams were no longer afraid of Miami. Ironically enough, that game was missing from ESPN's 30 for 30 series on the Miami dynasty.
@soonerdave01
@soonerdave01 10 лет назад
Tim Marsh Probation ended OU's run in the late 80's as it did Miami's run in the mid 90's. USC's run ended in the latter part of the first decade of this century thanks to sanctions and the mere allegations of wrongdoing have hampered Miami's recruiting up until now. Hell---SMU has never recovered from NCAA probation. You simply cannot go on probation and expect to flourish.

I'll never forget the lead-up to the game as we walked up Canal Street headed to the Superdome for kickoff. The Miami fans were the most obnoxious fans we'd ever been around. I'd been going to Bama games since the late 1970's and we'd been around a lot of college football fans but nothing compared to Miami's trash talking bunch. My brother and I had been there two or three years earlier at the 'Dome when Miami beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl so we knew how bad it'd be if they won again but the Tide walked all over the Hurricanes from start to finish. We crushed 'em that night and Miami's fans had left in droves before the game ended. On the drive back home the next morning to Grand Bay, there were homemade signs hanging from every overpass and one huge sign hangin' from an over the interstate said it all..."Hurricane Season's Over, The Tide Has Come In!" And it had...Alabama rolled the 'Canes that night 34-13 and the Crimson Tide was back on top of the college football world once again. (Mike Graham / Jerry Graham)

Anthony Broaddus I know there the only losses they talked about were the Penn State and Notre Dame losses, cause those games were close. They tried to act like whenever Miami lost in those days it was a fluke, but there was no way they could say this one was a fluke, so they just skipped over it
@broaddusmarines
@broaddusmarines 9 лет назад
Jeremy Forczyk Yeah, they act like they just dominated the Irish. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact once Lou got HIS recruits to South Bend, he was 2-1 against the Canes. They also didn't mention getting mandhandled by Tennessee in 85. The Canes got treated the way pedophiles get treated in prison in that game. Just brutal. But yeah they want to brag about beating an overrated Texas team? Whooptee doo..... Even funnier/sadder is how most of the guys you see in that documentary are also seen in another 30 for 30 called "Broke"......or getting busted for not paying for hookers and choking their girlfriends.....or being accomplices to murders. To be fair, I like the Rock and Ed Reed.
@jfa-px3mu
@jfa-px3mu 9 лет назад
Anthony Broaddus Yea the Tennessee game in '85 was a fascinating one, it basically was a national title shot for Miami, cause they went into it at #2, and they got destroyed. That game seems to have been forgotten by history. Don't get me wrong, I do think Miami had some great teams those years, but I don't see why 30 for 30 couldn't tell the full story, they had to act like the team was just invincible.
@broaddusmarines
@broaddusmarines 9 лет назад
Jeremy Forczyk My point exactly. You would think by watching that 30 for 30 was that the only games they ever lost from 1983-1993 were to Penn State, Notre Dame (only once), and BYU. I agree. I'm an Irish fan, but I give Miami credit where credit is due. They were the team of the 80s, but they talked like they were the 85 Bears every year. None of those 80s or 90s teams were all time greats in my opinion (the 87 team would have been if not for Testevarde having a stinker of a game). He was atrocious that game. The 2001 team is definitely one of the all time greats though. Then the next year they lose to a very average OSU team that they should have run off the field by halftime.

Can’t wait till we meet again in September Roll Tide we are currently 14-3 7-2 in Miami and 6-0 in Tuscaloosa and 1-1 in New Orleans this will be the first matchup in my lifetime as I was born in 1995 and this was the last game to date we’ve played against each other. Would love a home and home like we’re gonna have with FSU where we are 3-1-1 overall and 2-0 in Tuscaloosa the Tallahassee one will be the first game we’ll play there. I’m so glad we are starting to get home and home with power 5 teams and USF where we have a home and home and a game in Tuscaloosa two years from the last home and home. We also have set up home and homes with Texas, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Ohio State, Noter Dame, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech from 2022-2035. In 2026 we are set to play @ West Virginia and host both USF and FSU. 2026 is a good schedule with all power 5 and 1 group of 5 games.

I don’t see another program ever coming close to the level of dominance Bama’s had since 2008. Outside of 2010 they have been in the National Championship conversation every year entering the Iron Bowl. Nine National Championship appearances in a 14 year period is insane. I’ve been an Alabama fan since 1979. At some point, this run will come to an end. In the interim. I’m riding this wave of success as long at it lasts.

To a huge extent, thank our great defensive coordinator, Brother Oliver, for this win. He had their Heisman winning QB totally confused and Our defense wore them out. The Miami players ran their mouths and acted like they wanted to fight in the French Quarter before the game. A group of Alabama players and Miami players were yakking at each other trading insults. Then an Alabama player said this, “I like your colors, aren’t those girl colors?” I visited with Brother this afternoon.

It's the George Teague show from from 1:40:00-1:45:00. But the play starting at 1:42:58 is one of the best defensive plays I've ever seen. And duh!?!? Of course Miami will take the penalty rather than let Alabama have the ball. AND that was the closest Miami's offense came to scoring a TD during this game. I remember watching this game, I had just started renting a room from a guy I knew. And a couple of his friends show up right b4 the game wearing Miami hats. I hadn't seen Bama play all year but being a Bama fan since I was a baby I told them they were in for a bad night. They were like, "Ok then, you want to bet?" Now, I've never been a man to gamble, & my rule was never bet more than $2 on anything. BUT, I was so sure Bama would win I bet each of them $5. But I tried to talk them out of it first. I told 'em "ain't no doubt in my mind Bama is going to win this game. Are ya'll sure you wanna lose the game & some $ at the same time?" And they said "Put your $ where your mouth is." And I said "Just remember it was ya'lls idea & not mine!"
