6th seed, beat 60 win Utah team, came back from 3-1 to beat Phoenix, beat 60 win (then MVP David Robinson) Spurs in WCF, & Swept the Orlando magic (the team that beat Jordan) in the Finals....95 Houston Rockets most underrated champions in history...#NeverGiveUp
@M No it's not because our best athletes don't play soccer they either play football basketball baseball or hockey some choose mma and or boxing and boxing been dying for years but it's still more popular than soccer
Hakeem was just on another plane of existence during that playoff run and that trade for Clyde Drexler was a gutsy move by Leslie Alexander. Those two meshed so well in the postseason that year.
@M as an European I will take basketball over football all Day. Football players are just a bunch of mourners that goes to the ground when they are touched
The 1995 Rockets are also one of the worst NBA champions ever. 47-35 does not lie. Yes the playoff run was incredible and true Cinderella and admirable and storybook but 47-35 does not lie. They were ordinary Joe becoming rich. They weren’t the Empire.
I'll never forget game one. When Nick Anderson missed those last few free throws. It was unbelievable. Probably the biggest choke in NBA playoff history. The guy was never the same after this series. Kenny Smith then followed with one of the most clutch 3 point shots ever. Amazing championship for Houston and a great game.
I don't think them beating the Magic was as surprising as the other 3 teams, they were the least experienced. Orlando obviously would've won G1 if not for the 4 straight misses at the line but Houston more than likely would've still won the series their championship experience would've shown as the series progressed.
Chris M True but the Magic were big favorites in that Finals despite their youth because they knocked off MJ and the Bulls as well as Reggie Miller and the Pacers in the playoffs.
Yeah they were definitely favored. I don't think they should've been though they were pretty vulnerable on the road which usually goes under the radar in the reasons they lost the way they did.
Hakeem may have been the best performer throughout the whole playoffs but Drexler was the x-factor. He wanted this championship more than anyone else. I don't think the Rockets would gone all the way without him.
Kok Yee Huei David Yup I think Clyde Drexler was the key to the Rockets winning the championship in 95 as a 6th seed without him they probably lose in the first round..just my opinion
Greatest playoff run in NBA history, bar none. No team really comes close. The four teams they beat won a combined 238 games or 59.5 games on average. The next closest team is the 2016 Cavs, whose four opponents won a combined 221 games...the Warriors making up more than 1/3 of that by themselves. The Rockets beat four teams who AVERAGED 59 1/2 wins between them. That's insane.
The Cavaliers had the luxury of having 3 superstars on one team plus they had solid role players in JR Smith, Tristan Thompson, Richard Jefferson, and Iman Shumpert. Also they went 12-2 in the first three rounds of the playoffs with homecourt advantage. What the Rockets did is more impressive no homecourt and had to come from behind in most series.
It's hard to imagine that he was almost traded by the Rockets for Sean Elliott. If the trade wasn't voided it's likely that Big Shot Bob doesn't win 7 rings.
@@pakstaNo. Sean Elliott is a "pushy". Robert Horry was traded for Sean Elliott bc he wouldn't shoot the ball. Elliott failed his physical. After that Horry said Fuk It and started shooting without thinking. Shooting at any moment. That's when Big Shot Bob was born
Robert "Big Shot Bob" Horry. Dude always managed to be on the right team at the right time lol... not taking anything away from him tho. Dude earned those 7 Championship rings. Dude had a knack for knocking down the big ass important shots.
The 2002 shot against the Sacramento Kings and the 2005 shot against the Detroit Pistons were arguably two of the greatest clutch shots in NBA history.
Clyde Drexler got his long awaited payback against Horace Grant by sweeping him and the Magic four straight. as for Horace, the next year, 1996, it was MJ and the Bulls turn to blank him 4 straight in their ECF duel. how ironic is that.
He also got payback against Dennis Rodman, in that respect..in the conference finals vs the Spurs (was beat by Rodman and the Pistons in the 1990 Finals)
hakeem is the best center of all time his foot work and shooting touch made him an offensive phenomenon. He lead an mediocre team to back to back finals and coach rudy got into the HOF because of him. Hakeem had no weakness.
Olajuwon made people around him better, but Rudy T got in the Hall of Fame for his own success as well. He also coached the US Olympic Basketball Team to Gold as well. He's a well known scout and back-office personnel that made franchises more successful. Case in point: Houston and LA.
I always thought clyde had a great team in Portland also, I mean Terry porter, Duckworth, kersey, buck Williams, even Danny young, cliff Robinson, man that's a great team, but I'm glad he went to Houston and helped them get it done
as of the 2017 NBA Finals, still the only team (95 Houston Rockets) in the history of the NBA to beat all 4 playoff opponents with at least 50 regular season victories to win it all: Get this; Utah Jazz (60-22), Phoenix Suns (59-23), San Antonio Spurs (62-20) and Orlando Magic (57-25); a combined record of (238-90), incredible.
KROCKOHOLICSHTOWN The Utah Jazz Team the Lakers player in the 1st round in 2009 only won 48 games that year. They did however achieve the feat beating 4 opponents with 50 or more wins in 2001, Blazers(50-32), Kings(55-27), Spurs(58-24), And 76ers(56-26).
And the Rockets beat the best teams in the records in both conferences. As under the current playoff format, it is almost impossible to have such repeat again.
Teams don't win 60 anymore unless they are the top two seeds. Think about that shit. On top of that, The East only has 1 or 2 teams in the modern era who've done it or come close to doing it. A lot's changed since the flopping Europeans arrived.
Oh time has gone by so fast . I remember these back to backs like it was yesterday. I was a Mad Max / Mario Elie fan .Does anyone remember Marvin Zindler leading that parade TWIRLING his baton ??
def the best center of all-time. Not as dominant but much more complete than Shaq and Wilt, much better defense and handling than Kareem, clearly better than David Robinson, and definitely miles ahead of Russell, just imagine the stats Dream would've had playing on the 60's Boston Celtics...
yoe91 I don't know about all time. Bill Russell has to be up there along with The Admiral David Robinson. Hakeem was nasty though and I'm taking nothing away from him. Its just a tough call for best center. Oh and Wilt Chamberlain.
You're freaking delusional. You're just saying that cause you're on this video. Kareem and Wilt are way better than haakem. You guys like to overrated players out of their order. Wilt by far the most dominating followed by Kareem. Stats don't lie, Wilt dominated like no other.
Respect to Clyde the Glide for coming into a difficult situation where half the team didn't want him and he had all the pressure on his shoulders to win because he would have been crucified had the Rockets lost that year. Clyde went in and played like a boss. He showed he was not only a winner but a leader as well.
The Houston rockets had finished the second half of the season with an record 16-17 and 47-35 overall with Clyde the glide drexler arrival, the champs rockets entered the playoffs as the slump lower sixth seeded in the west
They were the defending champions when they traded for him. They weren't struggling that bad prior to the trade they were considered a top 10 team I guess the Rockets GM felt for a defending champion they should've had a better record than they did. The ironic thing is the Rockets struggled a lot more after the trade, the actually didn't catch fire until Maxwell quit on the team during the Utah series. I wonder if Houston would've still gotten out the 1st round if Maxwell didn't do what he did?
It was tough for Maxwell dropping the role from a starter for years to a role player (not even a 6-man) of the team in the middle of the season. He was simply denied of it the role. As the starting lineup cannot able to fit both Maxwell and Drexler together.
I was born the year they won this one and I rewatch this all the time when I feel weak Let’s go rox hopefully we get back to the playoffs soon and I can see the championship won here
The Sixers in '68 The Suns in '70 The Sixers in '81 The Suns in '95 The Knicks in '97 The Lakers in '06 All these teams gagged away 3-1 leads before the Warriors did..yet, no one ever mentions it..fucking idiots lol. And I get that they did it in the world championship round, which magnifies it a little, but Christ, at least they won the title 3 out of 4 times to avenge that hiccup in 2016.
Great story for the rockets in 94-95, they beat Karl Malone & John Stockton in round 1, Barkley and the suns in the semi finals after being down 3 to 1, took out the MVP David Robinson and the Spurs in the Conference finals, and the swept shaq and the magic in the finals
The Rockets with Thorpe/Maxwell were a nightmare for teams on defense that's why they were considered the Bulls kryptonite. The Rockets with Drexler had a miracle playoff run but their frontcourt became more vulnerable against teams like the Supersonics compared to Houston with Thorpe/Maxwell who matched up a lot better with them. I think Sam Perkins was the real difference maker for Seattle against them because he was a big who could shoot from outside.
In fact, Drexler and Maxwell did not work well together. This reflected on the regular season record, and it ended up Maxwell quitting the team after losing game 1 in the playoff against Jazz (and Herrera hurt). Then, the Rockets lift off.
You're right Chris. Clyde deal doesn't happen, Barkley deal doesn't happen. Dream NBA Championship of Jordan versus Olajuwon a reality. Olajuwon less happy(and probably even more dominant) because of not trading for his friend. We couldn't matchup in 96' without Thorpe against Kemp, so in essence, Drexler was traded for Barkley on the same team.
Also wanna mention Carl Herrera who was another athletic big foward they had in their 2nd unit. The Rockets with that lineup had a top 3 defense they simply weren't the same on the defensive end again when those 3 were gone.
1994-95 Was A Very Very Beautiful Special Year For Me... My HOUSTON ROCKETS Won Their First NBA Title Back To Back, And My SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS Won Their 5th Super Bowl....
We Got AWFULLY close in 2018, in WCF We took the Warriors to 7 Games (who swept Cavs in Finals) and Only Lost in Game 7 Due to Chris Paul Getting injured, 2021 Now we suck (Due to our TERRIBLE Coach Silas.. he can’t facilitate Jack, he don’t even try!) but we have Young Rookies that are improving with Jalen Green, sengun, KPJ, And Christian Wood.
In the 1995 NBA playoffs, the rockets we're the lower sixth seeded in the west, and knocked off all top four teams in the west to win the NBA title, eliminate the 60-win Utah jazz,59-win phoenix suns,62-win San Antonio Spurs and 57-win Orlando magic, down 2-1 to the jazz and down 3-1 to the suns and beat the Spurs in six games before sweeping the young Orlando magic team, Hakeem olajuwon dominant the big men's like David Robinson and Shaquille O'Neal
This was the definition of Team Ball and trusting random ppl in your crew to step up to the plate... Redefined the word Clutch city, Can't name a more dominant unexpecting cast of champions, with Kareem magic, Jordan Scottie, with Rockets it was Hakeem and whoever was hot that night...
6th ranked Houston Rockets 47-35 eliminate all top 4 teams like 60 win Utah Jazz, comeback from an 3-1 deficit 59 win Phoenix Suns,62-20 record San Antonio Spurs and 57-25 Orlando Magic to win their second straight nba title?🏀🏆🏆
These Rockets championship teams were the polar opposite of 90's playoffs teams, whereas Rockets were consistently clutch and the Knicks wasted numerous chances when they mattered most.
When I think about the ultimate underdogs across all sports, the 1995 Houston Rockets and the 2012 San Francisco Giants come to my mind. People, including myself, were so wrong on them. I always remember Stephen A. Smith from ESPN said “Tigers in THREE” predicting the 2012 World Series btw Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. The 1995 NBA Finals is pretty much the same scenario where the team everyone picked to win the series end up being swept.
I can't stand it when people would say, that the only reason why we won those championships is cause MJ wasn't playing. The Rockets deserved both championships. They fought hard for what they wanted to pursue, to be among the greats. Magic, Bird, Wilt, M.J. That's what made these teams so great
Watching this in 2021. Was a kid in Houston during this time. Basketball was awesome then. It was real. Now, it's just flopping, theatrics and political. I am glad I got to at least witness this great time.
The most impressive thing to me about the 95 Rockets is how they got so hot that they were able to win it all without a true power forward. The next year against Seattle, you could easily see how not having that Otis Thorpe type really hurt them. All they needed to do was pick up a Kevin Willis type Power forward, and they would've been right back in the finals in 97, but instead, they destroyed a championship team by trading key components for a washed up out of shape, lazy, Charles Barkley. The Rockets had the Jazz knocked them out of the playoffs in 94 and 95 by playing tough defense on Karl Malone with Thorpe in 94 and then Horry in 95, but in 97, it was Barkley's job to gaurd him and Malone was scoring basically at will unless Olajuwon was guarding him. The pick and roll was Stockton and Malone's bread, and butter and Thorpe and Horry were quick enough to switch out when they used it, but Barkley was just too slow and lazy to play any real defense and Utah was basically scoring at will.
Nope, Leslie Alexander the owner of the Rockets wanted to trade for Clyde but the coach Rudy T was initially against the move. He finally relented and the organization pulled the trigger on the trade.
How packed was the Western Conference in the 1990s? So packed that you literally had a Western Conference Finals quality match up... in the first round between the Rockets and Jazz. Four Hall of Famers... Hakeem/Clyde vs. Stockton/Malone.
Houston rockets became the lowest sixth ranked team is to win the NBA title (back to back), knocked out the top four teams, who won 50 or more games:60-utah jazz,59-phoenix suns,62-san antonio spurs and 57-orlando magic 🏆🏆
It almost happened in 1995 but what do you'll think had it been Indiana Pacers vs Houston Rockets in 1995 NBA Finals. ? I don't think it would had been a sweep. Two veteran teams and more evenly matched.
