Great video buddy! I just bought a 97 outback and none of the temp controls worked. I got in there thanks to this video and found the previous owner spilled a sticky drink down in there and gummed up everything. I cleaned it out really good and its working fine. I didn't even break anything. Thanks again. Saved me hundreds $$$$
Yikes! Thanks for posting this, it was exactly what I was looking for. I had the dash apart on my son's '98 Legacy last night trying to figure out where the bulbs were for this. After watching how much disassembly you had to do to that HVAC module, I'm thinking he can just live with a dark panel!
If you still have a radio shack, go an purchase the mini bulbs two to a pack, only a few dollars, then you can use those to replace the bulbs. buy extras as these go out quite often. then you don't have to grind or break anything. have had to replace mine several times. subaru wants about 30 bucks each as they sell you the holder also. Clean the buttons as they get crud on them from spillage in the cup holders, things go back much easier with everything clean.
If yours is really busted like mine you can just get a replacement unit on eBay for $40, ripped from a junk vehicle. Buy it from someone who accepts returns, swap it out and see if it works again. I figured the electronics on mine were burned out from drink spills so it wasn't worth the trouble of disassembling it(keep in mind that a cleaned out one will be have a shortened life even if it does work again). I'll keep this procedure in mind in case I have this issue again though.
hey this is great! thanks for the info. There need to be more info out there about these old wagons. Owned one years ago and just picked one up again! 1996 legacy outback :D
Not sure if you or anybody else will ever see this comment, but what are all of the little square green/orange bulb things underneath every button? I’ve never seen that kind of bulb before. I am pretty sure the T3 bulb does not light up all of the buttons, those little things with the green/orange tips are tiny bulbs that are soldered on. I have no idea how to change those or what kind of bulbs those are.
Thanks great video Now I know how to remove the A/C control.. but I can't seem to find T3 bulbs? do you have a link you could put in the description ? Thanks in advance...
If it is a constant clicking, even when the car is off, it could be the keyless entry system. Mine started clicking after I swapped the battery. There should be a button that you can press to get it to stop.
