The wires on the starter and alternator are NOT grounds, calling them grounds is a fire hazard.

You can do this without removing the intake manifold and completely disassembling the top. If you're replacing the head gaskets this method is fine because you have to do it anyway but if you're replacing a clutch it's just added time and money for new gaskets.

Great details - thank you! Just one note about the throttle/cruise lines. You mentioned not touching the rear nuts to maintain the calibration, but in the video you unscrewed both front and rear. I had to unscrew front nuts first to allow enough slack to remove the line from the throttle, then screw them back together to set the placement before unscrewing the rear nut to remove the line from the clip. The reason is the clip on my '00 Legacy only allows the thinner rear side of the line to pass through. ; )

Subaru's service manual says to support the transmission with a floor jack, is that needed?
@PaycoTsunami
@PaycoTsunami 4 года назад
If that is stated in the manual, do it for sure! People have the pitch stop (transmission mount on top) sufficient enough to hold it up if you're worried. Personally it's been sitting on my frame for almost a year now and I've moved it around quite abit

i just bought a clean 98 outback 5 speed that need head gaskets. what else should i replace while im in there. it already had the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner done literally a week before the gaskets went. im thing on doing the rear main seal and the plastic thing you showed. the clutch seems alright. but ill replace if its in bad shape. of course im gonna do the valve cover gaskets and everything you already take off when you do head gaskets. but what do you think i should replace while the engine is out that wouldnt come in a head gasket kit s i only gotta order stuff once.
@PaycoTsunami
@PaycoTsunami 5 лет назад
well since you're replacing the gaskets already, planning on replacing the rear main, the Oil separator (plastic gasket) to an aluminum one and previously done the majority of the timing belt. I would suggest the other gasket next to the one I mentioned. Its a smaller gasket that also goes out. Its like a plug If I remember correctly, like a circle plate with two screws. Another would be the throw out bearings for your clutch, its just one of those things that go out and since you're about to take out the engine, its already there for you to easily replace! The last one would be the front crank seal, also look into checking your shims when you open it up to replace the heads. That's really all I have on the top of my head right now, when you have the engine out its definitely an open playground! Another thing is using lapping compound to re-seat your valve's too! I believe it helps out compression, there's some pretty good videos on how to do that on this site you could look into as well! Hope this helped out in some way, I've done some research but I feel it might be lacking in some cases. It really depends on what kit you decide on and whats missing. Another spot you can ask is a forum on Facebook, its fantastic with tons on mech's helping each other out with subaru's and I get some pretty good advice whenever I need it! @TheSamplebridge
@TheSamplebridge 5 лет назад
@@PaycoTsunami ok what shims are you talking about. Im probably not gonna be taking the heads apart, considering this a a cheap buy that im gonna daily for a while. Only think i could see needing to take apart is valve springs to replace valve seals. Also what are the shims your talking about?
@PaycoTsunami
@PaycoTsunami 5 лет назад
@@TheSamplebridge ah if the car is in need of a head gasket change, I would totally jump on it, it's not going to last long sadly. When I reference heads I mean the solid piece of metal you remove that has all the valves seated. Its what you take off to replace the headgaskets, also double check on your thermostat since its a huge factor of over heating which causes the headgasket failure. But just a word of advice with these beasts, once it's overheated, the heads are T.O.A.S.T. Super sad truth but its Dey wey Of the Subaru Boxer engine lol To answer your questions, they're the buckets your cams hit. They keep your valve lash adjusted, you need to have a specific clearance between the cam and shim. Since I previously thought you were going to take your heads out, it wouldn't been a bad Idea to see if they're still up to spec! You use a "feeler gauge" to make sure they're still good, just look up "EJ25D Valve Shim", give you a picture to know what I mean. They literally look like Mini buckets funny enough!

@PaycoTsunami 11 месяцев назад
Honestly the intake & other major things like alternator can stay but I was taking it all off initially for a rebuild so it was easier to man handle everything off in the engine bay since its tied down with the mounts instead of hugging the motor to ratchet the basics off on an engine stand

@@PaycoTsunami sorry didn’t mean to make a harsh comment if it seemed like that but I have 99 outback that has the same engine and all of the knowledge that I can get rebuilding my motor is great! since it will be my first and I would like to build it right especially since I will turbo the motor na/t. Did you use the same graphite head gasket or did you go with a multi layer steel mls. Or a Sti spec head gasket?
@PaycoTsunami
@PaycoTsunami 3 года назад
@@brenttonbmx oh no dude don't sweat it! Just wanted to let you know everything is still in full swing, after finishing it up. I fell back in love with it and grabbed more goodies to toss on the channel 💫 i wanted to do the same personally but after hours of research, it's not worth doing to the EJ25D since the cylinder walls aren't strong enough for the boost. Better to swap for a single cam or if you do end up going for it run around 5psi. I used oem updated MLS for the rebuild and it's pushing strong right now with no issues other than stripped threads on the valve cover 🥳
@brenttonbmx
@brenttonbmx 3 года назад
@@PaycoTsunami thank you for the reply I appreciate it and yeah I wouldn’t do more than 5 pounds I just wanna build something that I’ve been wanting a long time and since I’ll have the turbo parts hopefully eventually I could swap out for a single cam to lower the compression to a more acceptable ratio. I don’t care if it’s 3 pounds of boost just a little bit of boost goes a long ways especially when you’re coming from naturally aspirated. You could get on the Facebook forum “na/t subarus” and they have a bunch of great info if you ever decide to go that route. Would you have the business or part number. name you got the head gasket from? By chance

@@PaycoTsunami was it a MLS head gasket for a newer Ej motor? I haven’t went to the Subaru dealership yet to ask them a bunch of questions about connecting rods pistons head gaskets etc. that I could swap in from newer cars
