Great video! It did fix my “dirty” CD player. I would like to add that cd cleaning disk DO NOT FIX THE PROBLEM! You have to clean the laser with a Qtip and alcohol like the video states. I did exactly what the video and it producer said and it fix my problem. Make sure you disconnect the battery of the truck before you do any removal or disconnects to prevent electrical damage to components. Overall great video!
Hmm I'll try that, my Sonoma is doing this and that was my first like theory why it wasn't working. I don't have many cds actually just would like it to work I'm strange like that. I'll probably do the Bluetooth aux mod thing if I can figure that out. Oh he did put a snippet of info there that I forgot... These can code lock with no power or something that does worry me, 26 year old truck radio wonder if anyone would even have that code.
I just fixed this on my 2000 GMC. However I used and recommend canned air (The kind of thing you use on a computer), because you don't want any moisture or oil or dirt in the air blast, and you can direct it via the red straw to the center area (The laser always starts on the inside of the CD or DVD.
Thank you great video!. My power button stuck in the off postion went to the local yard and got another unit but had the err so I swapped the cd from my old unit still err so now I will try cleaning like you did and see. Thanks again
You were fortunate that the laser lens was just dirty. Typically, you need to replace the laser or spindle motor, or both. They work in tandem through the microprocessor. I used to repair home CD players and CD boom boxes back in the 90s for a large company. The Sonys were especially notorious for bad lasers. We used to just replace both motor/laser to get the unit back to the customer without unnecessary delay. Sony said that if you needed to adjust the laser power to get it to work, then just replace the laser. There's also an laser eye pattern you need to check on a scope. Sometimes with a slightly dirty laser, the songs will just skip a bit and still play, even with a spotless disc. Anyway, good job on the repair.
Thanks, yeah but after two plus decades component level repair isn't as practical an option anymore as the parts were discontinued long long ago. Theres also no schematics published by Delco so determining a failed IC chip is out of the cards. Had the spring clean approach I videoed not worked out, my next one would have been to adjust the laser power output. Failing that, toss it in the recycle bin and try with another CD assembly from a salvage yard vehicle with the same part numbered radio.
@@DrShock hi I have a question my radio cd show me the error ( no cd ) obviously the cd being inside so I need to clean also the same things that you show in the video ? Thanks 👍
My 2004 version says, T I then :00 then err. The 5 thumbs down people figured you would fix theirs for them! 5:30 This is when I would have ripped it off and thrown the thing in the dumpster. You've convinced me. I'm getting an aftermarket one! Can I have that time back?
Terrific video. Very clear, concise, thorough, and easy to follow. I needed to know how to get the player out of the housing. My plugins were slightly different, but I figured that out. Tomorrow I try to put it all back together. Will sleep with my fingers crossed.
Thanks, this was helpful! Unfortunately cleaning didn’t help, and the gears all looked good, but this video showed how to replace the CD mechanism, and with a new mechanism it’s working great now! That antenna cable is a lot harder to pull off than you made it look!
Friend, could you make a video of how to repair the REMOTE CD player delco 16231055 that comes separately from the radio since mine comes with the integrated tape player with problem ERR
DrShock, another great video !!! And I know my limitations when it comes to electronics too, sir. So, someone else will be earning their pay when it comes to the radio and/or the CD player. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and videos sir. Looking forward to seeing the next video
Yep, there's a link in the video description if you are not comfortable, or successful, doing the repair and just want to buy a replacement Delco radio for your 90s truck.
The more you use the CD player, the less likely you have problems occur. Isopropyl alcohol will remove lubrication from moving parts and should not be used. But it will not harm the laser lens when done infrequently. Cotton is more abrasive than preferable, but it is not practical to get a lens cleaning microfiber cloth in such a confined area.
I haven't run into that problem yet, but if I had this issue I would still _partially_ disassemble it to see if I saw anything that might be binding up the gears (could be an easy fix). You can try lubricating the points I went over, and giving the drive motor a nudge at the main gear with a plastic tool. If no joy then yeah, the options are either a replacement CD drive assembly or a replacement radio. A part like the drive assembly would have to come from a radio shop, GM never sold them.
Did this service and cleaned the eye and all the gears looked good. It accepts the cd then spits it back out and i get the ERR code. I tried two different cd players from one from my old unit and one from the junk yard. Any suggestions? May be the main part of the radio?
If the error persists across two different CD drive units, that have been cleaned and lubricated on their mechanisms, then yes I would begin to suspect an issue with the main circuit board, or the wiring harness between them.
I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 series original CD player it keeps rejecting the CDs when I put them in it says era is this the problem video very helpful
I did all that and it didn't do any good for mine. I was planning on using an after factory head unit in the future anyway. I would just like to play some CDs now.
I got a 1996 GMC Yukon and delco stereo has power but won’t play any sound lil different from that one cd Separated from the stereo. Rare some times when I start the truck stereo random starts playing music but as soon as I touch sound gone and won’t do it again after
Several possibilities for root cause. I'd check the speaker wiring harness first. If that checks out it's very likely a defect on the radio circuit board itself. You might try cleaning the pins on the connectors in back before going for a replacement.
Maybe, but I would check the speakers first. You can work the F--R and L--R fader knobs to zero in on whether its all of the L side (Drivers) or just the F or R speakers that have cut out. After over 20 years the paper in these speakers is going bad, I've seen quite a few go in the last couple of years.
I do have a jeep wrangler that looks like the one you just clean and so on and the cd player don't work .Maybe I should take it out and do what you did.thanks ex video
I have a 2001 silverado. The CD player stopped working. I bought this truck 2nd handed and have no idea what the code is. I'm guessing it needs the same kind of service. What do I do without the code ? Thanks
Without the "ERR" message, it could be something more serious such as a dead controller circuit board for the CD drive. There are no replacement parts sold anymore for these, so my advice would be to hit up your local pull your own parts salvage yard, like an LKQ, and get the _exact_ same year and radio part number out of a donor truck. Then swap over the CD drive mechanism.
Typically this kind of behavior is traced to a failure of the rubber roller that rolls in, and rolls out, the CD at the front of the CD drive assembly. It can also be the drive gears for the roller, such as shown at 9:48. Either way it's not repairable if any parts are damaged as there are no separate parts available. So you'll need to locate a better CD drive assembly from a salvage yard donor to repair this sort of problem.
I have a 2005 CD/ radio with single slot. On mine, I found that the rubber sleeve covering the drive rod has expanded just enough to make the rubber sleeve slip. I am going to try adhesives on the rod and see if it regains enough friction to grip a disc If anyone else has fixed this issue, please share your remedy. .@@DrShock
I kinda remember these proprietary Delco radios of the 90s being 1.5 DIN high but wider than 2 DIN because of the heat sinks they have. Not 100% sure, but it's definitely not single and different than double.
Before letting it go, try some blasts from one of those canned air computer keyboard dusters. You might get lucky. Just don't let the red tube come off inside. ;-)
In the 1990s and early they program CDs and DVDs to delete the program after so many plays I think that's the same thing that they did with some of these electronic items they delete the reading or the program that the instrument won't work
Well I must say I like the video but I also have to add that I would agree to working smarter not harder now within the year of 2020 they make cleaning disc with Solutions to clean those lasers as long as your CD player motor is still willing to turn.
Replaced the battery on my 2008 Honda CRV today. CD player worked perfectly before. But now, after resetting the code, the CD player reads Bad Disc and won't feed or eject a CD. Radio is fine. @#$&
A CD cleaning disc can help in some situations but not where you need to lubricate the slide rails for the laser lens. - لن يؤدي هذا إلى تزييت الشرائح ؛-)
