How To Fix A Car CD Player That Won't Load Or Eject Discs

First, apologies for the video quality; this was done off-the-cuff without much preparation.
Although I mention in the video that the problem is with a Mazda3 single disc CD player, and show some assembly / disassembly that is specific to these cars, the problem and solution themselves will apply to the majority of cars with an in-dash CD player.
The unit I show was manufactured by Sanyo Automedia, but the mechanism this unit uses for loading and ejecting CD's is fairly universal, and will apply to most other vehicles / stereo manufacturers.
These units use a rubber roller to load and eject the CD's. Over time, the roller can become dirty and lose its gripping power. If this is the only issue, it can be cleaned, and I would recommend denatured alcohol.
In my case, the roller was dirty, but this was not the only problem. The rubber roller rides on a metal axle, and over time, the rubber became loose, allowing the metal axle to spin independently of the rubber- when the CD was inserted or an attempt was made to eject it, the metal axle spun, but did not move the rubber, which is what makes contact with the CD.
The solution was to re-bond the rubber roller to the axle. To do this, I found success with contact cement. Other bonding agents may work, but contact cement does a very good job of bonding the rubber to the very non-porous metal axle. It will also not harm or deform the rubber, so I recommend using it.
In order to apply an adequate amount of contact cement to the rubber and axle, I used a hypodermic needle. Two reasons for this- first, it allows you to inject a very small, controlled amount of the cement. As you are injecting a bonding agent near areas that are required to spin freely, less is definitely more- you do not want to use too much and accidentally seize the axle up. Second, using a syringe allows you to inject the cement into the first half inch of the axle, not just the outside area.
To make the injection, I pushed back the rubber on each end with a jeweler's screwdriver. With the screwdriver still in place, I injected the cement slowly while drawing the needle out. Placing the syringe needle between the rubber and the axle without something like a screwdriver in place creates the risk of either puncturing the rubber, or breaking the needle off.
Also, I used a syringe with a screw-on needle- I found this was necessary as the cement was too viscous to draw in through the needle itself. I was able to inject it fine, but in order to fill the syringe, I did have to remove the needle and fill the "body" of the syringe without it.
If using contact cement, it is necessary to wait several hours for the bond to set. I waited 12, but it might be advisable to wait even longer.
I did not discuss removing the head unit from the dashboard; for Mazda3 owners, this process is documented in the factory service manual for the vehicle, which is available for download for free (a Google search should yield a source.) There are also, I'm sure, videos on RU-vid demonstrating this, however I'd strongly recommend following the service manual and only using RU-vid video's as supplements. When not done right, you run the risk of damaging or distorting your dashboard components. With modern cars especially, it is often obvious when a dash has been taken apart incorrectly, as they often will not look right when reassembled.
A note on the ribbon cable that connects the CD mechanism to the head unit- I did not show it's removal, but it is fairly simple. Using a small pair of pliers or a flat blade screwdriver, push the plastic clips on either end of the cable TOWARD the side of the harness that the cable plugs into. These are wedge type clips, and will, at least on mine, not come out completely.
If you have any questions regarding this fix, please feel free to post them in the comments. I do hope that this will be found helpful for anyone experiencing this issue.

Finally someone addressing the REAL problem instead of just cleaning it lol. (Still a bit intimidating without any guide for disassembling it, but the temptation of having a working CD player again is strong enough to push me to try this… also not sure how you got the glue under the rubber… didn’t really show how you did anything, sorry for the criticism… overall I still appreciated the video, gives me confidence that it can be done.

I guess you talk about it at the end, so that’s pretty much good enough. Cheers!

I Have a 2010 Mazda 3. the stereo wouldn't read the CD. I knew it should be a dirty lens but the repair guy said it's the motor and you need to change it. today I got some spare time and took it out, disassembled some parts and cleaned the lens. it was really dirty. it is working just fine now. for the assembly you just need to be very careful. I have to do it twice to make everything work properly. I'm happy I didn't have to pay for the motor change.

As it turns out this is the exact disk player I was looking to fix and the video couldn't have been more helpful... Reinstalled the CD player this morning and it works perfectly thanks to your video.

Thank you for your patient and exacting reply to a question I have right now. But this lets me know.....way beyond my capabilities. And requires a syringe. I guess they might be available for diabetics at the pharmacy, not sure. Quite confident I would be a fail at even removing the thing in the first place, I have looked at the thing, I presume its doable, but looking at it I would not know how. Break out the wallet time. But thank you for real.

Julio - I implemented your fix for CD "non-ejection" in my Mazda6 - thanks so much for that video. HOWEVER, when I was reassembling the entire unit, I inadvertently pulled the ribbon cable out of the radio end, and do not know EXACTLY where to reconnect the CD ribbon cable to the radio "motherboard".Might you have taken any photos of the inside of the radio when you had the unit disassembled,, that shows the ribbon cable. My Mazda dealer has been no help in securing this information. Gary McCormick Carlisle, PA

Thanks for the video. My player in a 2005 Chevy Enduramax has the slipping rubber roller on a metal shaft. I also noticed that the plastic gear on one end of the metal drive rod was spinning....lost adhesion. Glad your contact cement / syringe procedure worked. Has it held up over the recent years ?

I have a 2002 Lincoln ls. Just started getting the cd error message. It won’t eject cds or do anything. I’m afraid the CD player is shot or locked up and it has the 6 disc changer so it will be a nightmare to get my cds out

I'm a retired electronics engineer but I cannot fix this Roberts MP Sound 43 Radio/CD drive. SOMETIMES the eject roller fails to run. It seems to sense the disc as it is presented and the radio, (if playing ), switches off. However it fails to take the disc in. Conversely it will sometimes fail to eject. There is no discernible way to get it back to working correctly even dismantling to clean. Tapping around yields nothing loose. At first I suspected the motor. brushes. However it reads consistently even when the fault is present. (10R dc). You can't provoke any action by turning the mechanism by hand. Looked for maker. Looked for schematic. Cannot find or ID it beyond Roberts. Sometimes a complete power down restores the operation but not consistently. Its really hard to get apart and reassemble and I want some inspiration before I do that again. Can you help at all? {BTW it came in with no power. Replaced o/c SMPSU 620K start up resistor and power is now correct at 10.5V} Sincerely BerryG

My Ford CD player looks the same - the problem with mine was it wouldn't read discs and just ejected them. Turns out that white plastic disc that gets pressed down on the cd was worn and wasn't spinning freely. It had worn through on the sharp pressed metal sheets that it bears against. Hope i can get a replacement...

Awesome video, was very helpful for me! I fixed what was wrong with my 6 CD changing stero but after putting it back together it looks some parts are out of sync as if some motors need to be in a certain starting position when it's first powered on. Was careful dissembling my 6 CD changer but it's still not happy. Any suggestions?

I have never put a CD into my CD player so far Volvo S40, I have a little device, I bought for €20 it goes into your cigarette lighter it's about 4 inches in length, it has a port for charging your phone at the side of it , on the top it has a button saying answer or hang up phone calls, but it also has a display and you can put it to any digit you want in reference like radio station saying 87.26 then go to your stereo pick a button you don't usually press, copy the numbers to your radio you might have to go to fine tune then when this is done , go to your phone press Bluetooth it will pop up and then you will see pairing with car device , when it's done and you can play any song that you can find in the world from RU-vid or iTunes, or stuff that you have stored on it SD card, and you can answer phone calls you can use the phone to push except the call or you can use the little device the Bolton I said talked about earlier €20 instead of all this parts, Wires going all over the place taking your car all apart with this you just stick in your cigarette lighter end of story, boom.lol.

Nice story bro, but this topic is about how to fix a broken cd player. The fm transmitter you are talking about is not rocket science and not something from the future. Thats a very old stuff. And you never ever can get high quality sound from a fm transmitter.

I took it apart and observed the action when plugged back in with the top off and the device internals reject it even without trying to read it. All the small capacitors look good.

Cancel19 I have 2011 Toyota Corolla, don't know if this advice will help, but my CD player kept flashing CD IN,but there was no CD in player, it wouldn't let me incert another CD thou, I tried holding eject button for about 40 seconds, but that didn't help,so I had a small thin piece of plastic,I inserted it into CD player a few inches, very light pressed down, and for some reason, that turned off the stuck CD in light, and now it's working great.

How is that a "real simple fix" I'd rather hire 3 guys that sing, play the guitar and the play drums in order to make new music than to do what this video asks.
