In this episode of PREMIX we give you the first look at our 1995 Honda CR500 project. It was a little rough around the edges but with some elbow grease and a lot of patience it all worked in the end. This CR500 build is one of those that in the beginning is only supposed to take a month and then turns into six month plus life mission. Thanks to the companies like Cryoheat, Faster USA, Boyesen, Tm Designworks, Decal Works, UFO, FMF, Supersprox, Clarke gas tanks, TBT, Dunlop and All Balls for the help along with understanding how long these things sometimes take.The left hand main case needed to be repaired and we were lucky enough to find a dealer that had the right case in stock. We added Boyesen ignition and clutch covers for some bling factor. An MSV oversized water pump impeller and billet exhaust manifold was also used on his build along with other bolt-on items from FMF, IMS and UFO.The Engine was sent over to CryoHeat Metal Treatment. They performed their proprietary CryoHeat “stress relieving Cryogenic” process that makes the steel and aluminum parts much stronger and with over a 200% longer service life. The process also helps dissipate thermal temperatures and this engine should be running approximately 25°F cooler making more power. They also micropolished all of the moving internal steal parts, this makes the parts extremely shinny like chrome and slippery when wet!
The exterior of the engine was Vapor-Honed by CryoHeat for that “bling bling factory look” Then CryoHeat had their mechanic Scott a.k.a. “skid Plate” do the full assembly of the engine.When the dust settles and we have the project in the studio it’s all worth it. This build has tons of man hours into it and about a pallet of parts but man will it be fun to ride for years to come. Austin Perkins just happens to manage Perris Raceway in SoCal so track time is a given. Stay tuned for more on this build!

All they'd had to do is add counterbalancing shafts to smooth out those bike cubes. If KTM can make a nearly 700cc 4-stroke thumper smooth, a 500 two-stroke could be made smooth.

I would like to see someone publish material on how to update older dirt bikes to newer or late model parts for various models and displacements. This would help kindle the desire to keep these classic bikes alive as well as help those on budgets who can't afford the latest bikes. I would buy everything you published. Keep up the great work Dirt Bike Magazine, we appreciate it and love it!

In fact, any decent 450 can not only keep up with a 25 years old design CR500 but is actually faster on any race track.
@vetb882
@vetb882 4 года назад
@@Wide000 I don't think so bro. 20lbs. lighter, more torque AND horsepower and revs up twice as fast. This rider is a good B rider hence the yellow plates. Put someone like Musquin or Tomac on a 500cc 2 Stroke and you're really see the size balls you need to ride a 500 the way the ironmen rode them back in the day. 4 strokes claw at the ground and refuse to let go, for a slower non Pro, less agile, less coordinated rider, they will go faster on a 4 stroke. I've asked many Pro riders which they prefer. To a man they say they'd rather be riding 2 Strokes. "We are Pros, we race what we are PAID to race," was the comment from John Dowd who was factory at the time and asked that I don't print that in my interview. I honored his request. 4 strokes are also dangerous BECAUSE they claw at the ground so well. The level of serious injuries and paralyzed riders has increased since the 4 stroke craziness. Which would you prefer, a bike that goes at Warp factor 7 but only FEELS like it's going Warp factor 2...or a bike that at Warp factor 2 feels like it's going Warp factor 7? See, 4 stroke don't FEEL fast until you're about to bust your ass cos you can't manage the speeds it's going. And that goes even for the Pros, none of whom grew up racing 4 T. They bounce funny and then gram traction when you least expect it. There's A REASON they moved from 4T to 2T back in the day, the 2 T engine is MOTOCROSS perfection. The 4T craze is because the factories want you to pay 3000 bucks to fix your bike at the dealer instead of 300 at home in your garage. That's what happened when politics and greed took over. But have fun in whatever bike you're riding bro. Look up Marvin Musquin riding a KTM 150cc video, you WILL SHIT yourself. It's looks animated and sped up. Imagine him on a modern framed 500cc 2T. It'd be JAW DROPPING.
@Wide000
@Wide000 4 года назад
@@vetb882 What is your personal experience with 2t and 4t? I still own and like both, including a CR500 back then. They both have their pros and cons. 2T are best on technical trails. They are light and won't stall, thanks to an explodion at each turn of the crank. The 4t are easier and faster on a track. Broader powerband, more tractable, less downtime playing with the clutch and waiting for the power to come alive ... and so faster, laptime wise.
@vetb882
@vetb882 4 года назад
@@Wide000 you summed it up. I remember when Jonathan Beasley the owner of Budds Creek invited me and some of my friends down for a weekend. In the morning in mid-afternoon when their ground was very tractioning me and the other guy on a modified CR250 and me and my 03 KTM 250sx will whooping up on your other guys on the four strokes, but as soon as the sun started baking the track dry we couldn't realize why the same as whooping. the reason was that the many off-camber corners and you turds at the bottoms of heels the two strokes lit up the tires were the four strokes were on the inside and just tractioning the way up the hill while we were struggling and fighting taking the outside berms. In a same teach I believe a 2T is better, heavy kiss and good traction 2T is better. All of conditions especially hard packed and mud, the 4T will make life MUCH easier. I've only ridden a modern 4T 3 times and each time I was distracted by how the bike refused to hop over the little things the 2T just naturally dances over and skips over. It's kind of weird, but you need a slightly slower throttle haha to ride the 4T, big hands and she's doing all kind of weird stuff. The 2T because it's so responsive needs a quick throttle hand... AND better they're control. They're try completely different styles. 2T you gotta real a turn to clear a big jump, 4T same just is no sweat. I think that it's hurts Amateur riders, gives a false sense of improved abilities. We are the same level we were before hopping in a 4T, the bike is showing us to do more.. but that can a double edged sword. I'm impressed that you have to bikes to be able to choose from. Stay Well my man. Find me in FedBook ( haha) they here sending me to jail so I'm only just back s couple days. facebook.com/michael.james.9275

I haven't been into dirt bikes (or motocross) for, well ... a long time. Last year I was watching motocross while visiting my parents, haven't watched a race in well over a decade. I had the sound off, when I turned it on I heard the most horrible, sacrilegious sound I could hear on a motocross track: 4 stroke!! You can't beat the brutal, raw power of a 2 stroke. It's a shame their gone.

Is this the bike that has the antivibration inserts ? In the vid you said it still vibrates like a 500 :/ .... 25degrees cooler because of the cyro process, were you able to verify this ? Very interesting....what were the polished gear sets like ? That was an old factory trick , i never got to ride a bike with polished gear sets was wondering what that was like. Any porting and head decking ? What carb ? Dyno ?
@125Yamirider5
@125Yamirider5 5 лет назад
Joe Nobody those are all great questions. Most of the answers you can find on the website. The head is decked and the cylinder just has cleaned up ports nothing major. With the cryoheat and Micropolishing along with some high end coolant, it actually ran even colder then 25 degrees. These 500’s dont get very hot because of the low RPM speed on the motor. The carb is a 38mm Keihn PWK “non air striker” The gears polished made for unreal shifting. Buttery smooth. The vibration is never something you can get away from but the anti vibration inserts definitely helped in the idle and off throttle vibration. But once you hammer on that throttle, nothing is going to stop the vibration
