Lions (10-6) vs Eagles (10-6) December 30, 1995 Play by Play - Al Michaels Color Commentators - Dan Dierdorf, Frank Gifford Sideline Reporter - Lynn Swann
For Wikipedia : The December 30 Wild Card game between the Lions and Eagles was the highest-scoring playoff game in league history until it was surpassed by a 51-45 overtime win for the Arizona Cardinals over the Green Bay Packers on January 10, 2010.
Watching this, it's interesting how rarely the score is shown compared to broadcasts today. I think FOX had the score-always-displayed-in-the-corner added by this point, but the ABC/MNF crew hadn't updated to that yet.
As a Lions fan this was probably the most disappointing of all their playoff losses. They started 3-7, ran off seven straight wins and were on a roll and then Scott Mitchell went and pulled a Scott Mitchell. I was sitting at half-time all dejected and angry and my best friend was like "Come on, man! It's going to be ok! There's still time..." and I just kept saying, "No, it's over. I'm so stupid to ever believe they will ever be good."
Man as a fellow Lions fan, I feel you. They should have went after Warren Moon in 1993 instead of Mitchell. The Lions got uncharacteristically cocky following the 7-game win streak. They ran their mouths leading up to this game, and Fontes should have told them all to shut up and stay humble. The Eagles came in fired up, and rightfully so. They felt disrespected. This might have been a totally different game otherwise.
Was at this game bought tickets off a scalper 3tix for 32bucks......had a 40oz of Budweiser under my hoodies, and we had some blunts rolled, I been to alot of Eagle Games, even a playoff game during the superbowl playoffs, been to 4th and 26, playoff vs GB, but this is still in 2022, the best eagle game i ever attended yeah the last time was Dec 30, 1989, and we lost the LA Rams before they went to St. LOUIS,
If these eagles had a decent QB with that defense they would have won more playoff games. 8 tds and 14 ints for Pete and they made it to divisional round
Kinda sad when you have a HOF RB and the 1st WR duo in NFL History to rack up over 100 catches each (Herman Moore 123 catches, NFL Record at the time, and Brett Perriman 108 catches) and over 1,000 receiving yards each in the same season, and yet your QB stunk up the joint.
@@bretthosmer6770 Moon went to the Vikings via trade. So the Lions could have traded for Moon, but I guess the offer was not good enough to persuade the Oilers. Otherwise, this would be a better team because the Lions at that time also ran the Run & Shoot.
1:15:38 That showing of _Ernest Rides Again_ was the widest exposure that the movie ever got. It flopped when it was theatrically released, and man, it flopped _HARD!_ It only grossed $1.4 million in ticket sales and was the final _Ernest_ film to have a wide theatrical release.
I saw a theatrical trailer, I forget before what movie. The preview was literally just Ernest talking to the camera saying he had a new movie out. No scenes, no plot. Maybe the most half-assed trailer I'd ever seen. And I never actually saw it listed on a marquee anywhere.
@@pronkb000 It was pulled from theaters after its first weekend of release. _Ernest Goes To School_ was filmed in rapid succession after _Ernest Rides Again_ and it only wound up getting a limited theatrical release.
I was at this game With my mom she got us tickets cause I love Barry Sanders was my favorite player we won like 50-10 oddly enough Barry only rushed for like 12 yards whole game but i was still happy Birds won 😊
1:08:28 Some unlikely foresight by Al Michaels. The Florida Panthers did eventually battle the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals a few months later.
Considering both teams were 10-6 and didn’t play H2H in the regular season, what was the tiebreaker that had this game in Philly instead of the Silverdome?
@@franksylva9031 It should be noted that the Lions only home loss that year (7-1 at the Silverdome) was against the Arizona Cardinals, coached by................. Buddy Ryan (Philly swept the Cards) So indirectly, Buddy DID win a playoff game for Philly.
@@jamiejohnson4524 Thanks for getting back. I haven't tried unlisted yet. I usually go with private and then have it go public, usually on a Sunday afternoon. The funny thing is, when I first uploaded this game, it was actually public for about 2 weeks, then one day it showed up as blocked by the NFL. Not sure why they took so long to block it. I will try the unlisted way to see if that works. Thanks
@@jamiejohnson4524 No, they tell you it's not a strike. But it remains blocked. Sometimes if its a commercial that is causing the block (usually for music copyright), you can edit it out, but when the NFL blocks it, it's almost impossible to edit without erasing huge parts of the game. Usually the games they block are Playoff games and Super Bowls. Or if it was just a great game. I have an Eagles at Redskins game from 1989 (Randall signed his new contract and then went out and brought the Eagles back from a huge deficit to win the game) that I can't get unblocked by the NFL. It was a great game. That's why I was surprised this was not blocked. Hopefully it will stay up. This was a fun game to watch.
I’m stoked they are bringing back the REAL green uniforms for alternate games next year but they need to just do it full time. The midnight green was cool the first 10 years but it’s getting old.
Al, Frank and Dan are the greatest trio in history. It’s not close. As great as Randall was he was all about him. He didn’t have the discipline and humility to win a championship. He didn’t rein in Watters or any other star player on the team, and that’s why the Eagles of that era were relegated to division playoff games. Randall didnt eat breath and sleep championships.. The lions had Barry and nothing else. They had no swagger and no defense
Ya know, 2 thoughts come to mind here. 1): I heard some Lions players were saying they wanted this game to be over before halftime. Careful what you wish for, you might just get it. 2): everyone says you don't wanna play the hot team(Detroit in this case). The other side to that is every win streak has to come end at some point. Don't you want your team to be the ones to end their win streak?
@@jamiejohnson4524 yeah I'd forgotten that. I know they crushed the Jaguars 44-0 but I don't know who exactly they beat in their 7 game W streak. Here's a fun little fact that I don't know if a lot a people know about: Philadelphia qualified for the playoffs despite being outscored by their opponents during the regular season.
I had no dog in this fight so I didn't really care who won, but I remember watching his game and feeling horrible for the Lions. They got absolutely annihilated.
The vet turf was a nightmare a house of horrors for opposing teams wreck so many careers injury. Who wants to play on some kind of AstroTurf with concrete beneath 🥴
@2:17:34 Gary Anderson’s missed FG in the 4th quarter was an omen to what will happen 3 years/seasons later. In the 1998 NFC Championship, he missed what would’ve been the game winning FG and his team eventually lost in OT and a chance at making the Super Bowl.
Wouldn't it be funny... If the 2022 Lions made the playoffs (7-8 right now) and had to go up to Philadelphia for a playoff game and got revenge against the big bad Eagles?
@@tonyarceneaux286 listen here Feather-tickle... If I say the Lions would have beat the Eagles then... They would have beat the Eagles. You are just lucky that Detroit didn't make the playoffs. Otherwise.... It would have been Lions 70, Eagles 0 That's right! My crystal ball here just told me! *spins the plastic prize ball again... Yup... 70-0 for dang sure
Absolute worst bet I've ever made. I took the Lions, on the road, outdoors, against a good team in the playoffs. I didn't believe in Philly. They proved me wrong. I truly thought Detroit had a good road game in them. They embarrassed me and I lost. At least it was over in the first half LOL
In your defense Detroit coming into the playoffs was playing lights out football. I wanted the Eagles to win and was pleasantly surprised that they smoked the Lions in this game
@1:18:25....I can hear Tom Jackson yelling "KNOCK IT DOWN" on Primetime lol.....And can we just appreciate how awful of a job ABC did in NOT showing the score in the second quarter? I mean, had they not gone to halftime, they would have never put the score up. This was in 1995. They should have put the clock/score/down&distance box up in the corner, like Fox had been doing for 2 seasons. But even apart from that, the Eagles would score a TD, and no mention of the score would be made, or shown. Terrible production. Great announce crew, though.
Michaels is the best American announcer in sports history, for my money. He wasn't great in Super Bowl 52 but he has a ton of other iconic calls and is one of the most alert, detailed announcers ever. And in multiple sports--it's forgotten now what a great baseball announcer he was, and of course he has the most iconic hockey call of all-time. Wasn't good on the NBA, but oh well.
