1995 Xmas Catalogue vs. 2017 Catalogue | Nostalgia Nerd

2 Catalogues (or catalogs if you prefer). One from Christmas 1995, the other from Christmas 2017. One from the store formerly known as Index, the other from Argos (they were essentially the same thing). So let's see how Christmas 1995 compares to Christmas 2017 from a purely consumerism point of view. Also with a heavy bias towards watches, televisions, game consoles and the like. Because that's what I do. HAPPY CHRISTMAS! :D
Argos Catalogue 2017 vs. Index Catalogue 1995.

By all rights,the SNES Mini should be in the 2017 Winter catalogue..but sadly Nintendo arnt making enough of the bloody things to satisfy demand..although it's easier to buy one now than it was a few months ago.

Argos is a very British shop. The only one that makes you queue twice (once to pay for your items, the 2nd to collect them).

How do you pay twice? You pick them up when you buy them or order online and just pick them up!

He never said pay twice. But he is absolutely correct. Queue to pay at the till and queue to collect your goods. Also if you're using public transport, queue to get on the bus to go there and queue on the bus to get home.

I loved the Argos catalogue in the 90’s, it could take a week to choose a scientific calculator, despite not knowing what any of the buttons did. I’d also spend hours looking at the Casio keyboards, convincing myself I could teach myself to play. I finally bought one off eBay a few years ago, but never used it.

One of my first jobs was inputting orders for Benson and Hedges Gratis points back in the mid-90's (gift points that you actually got in the cigarette packets). You could either exchange the Gratis points for some Benson and Hedges-branded tat, such as a watch that counted down to the year 2000, a bright yellow kettle with the B&H logo etc or vouchers to spend in Index. When the UK Government banned cigarette promotions in the late-90's that probably started the downfall of Index as the B&H promotion was keeping it afloat!
@MegaWayneD
@MegaWayneD 6 лет назад
Ah yes, I think everyone in the office had at least one of those! I think the most popular items were the Swan Mellow Yellow kettle and the lemon squeezer which was this big metal thing that stood over the glass and you squashed the lemon on top.

Awesome video. I had that Casio data bank watch! Got it for Christmas and it would have been around 1995, possibly a year or two earlier. Its big draw was the "Illuminator" function that lit up the screen like a Christmas tree. Bathed in blue light so bright it could burn your retinas. Wonderful. Too bad it would completely drain the battery and the battery life was already suspect to begin with (they claimed a year but six months was more realistic). Still, it was a big, chunky, data bank watch and I loved it. I was obsessed with calculator watches for a while and the Casio Illuminator was the pinnacle of that obsession.

There was an Argos next to the Sainsbury’s where we used to do our family shop on Saturdays. I’d beg to be left to ponder the Argos catalogue and then be picked up on the way home (ah, the 90s... I was 8 or 9 and this was central London...). I remember fantasising about all the plastic crap I’d buy when I was a rich grown up. Great video. I think most people when they think of catalogues seem to have forgotten about Index. Although I do remember Index, I never considered them in the same league as Argos; they seemed like a small business than anything with only a few stores dotted around the country. My uncle had that Philips two cassette deck and CD radio cassette recorder, and yes it was a beast of a machine. I used to lend him music CDs and he'd use the tape deck to copy the tracks onto a tape. On the VHS page I could see an Orion VHS recorder; my dad bought one just like it as a package from the now long closed Colourvision. I hated that VCR as every time you tried to load a tape into the tape loader, 9x out of 10 it end up loading the tape wrong and would scrunge the tale up because you had to push the tape through quite hard because the loader mechanism wouldn't grab the tape smoothly for some reason. With that VCR also there was a period when all we could record in was in Longplay mode because we had lost the remote that allowed SP/L.P. to be switched, and it course back then finding a replacement remote was a pain and they cost about 40 quid from the manufacturer. Obviously no eBay back then to find a second hand remote.
