1996 CART Laguna Seca - The Pass - Why Was It Legal?

Firstly I'm not picking sides as of who really should have won, nor saying it was 100% illegal or anything. I'm just confused why the "aftermath" was deemed legal. Because if this was F1, WTCC or anything, it would be deemed illegal - "not taking the corners properly to gain an advantage"
1996 CART Season, final round at Laguna Seca, CA. Alex Zanardi (red) vs Bryan Herta. On the final lap, Zanardi dives up the inside of Herta at the top part of the Corkscrew (turn 8) to pass, but immediately runs off at the bottom part (turn 8a) in the process. He managed to hold on and take the win.
Situation: He didn't cut the top corner - which made the passing part obviously legal, and the pass was complete even before the apex. But he was a tad too fast so he immediately cut the next turn (8a) and "didn't lose ground" as he was supposed to, had he actually tried to amend his mistake and try to make the corner. In short, he DID gain an advantage there by "not losing ground from his mistake".
So why was it deemed legal?
Please comment! :-)

It was deemed legal at the time because the Rule Book simply stated a corner may not be cut to gain position. Nothing in the rule book back then about going off and coming back on and keeping your position. That of course changed the next season.

FIA today: 5 sec penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage + 5 sec penalty for returning unsafely
@brbroberts1
@brbroberts1 4 года назад
@@UnimatrixOne He didn't gain an advantage by leaving the course because he didn't leavethe course. 2 wheels on the asphalt == on the track, not off the track.. Besides, the advantage came in the corner before when he took the inside line and beat Herta fair and square through the corner. As far as returning unsafely (if he had gone off track), it wasn't unsafe, he was well ahead of Herta and moving faster when he came back in front of Herta. See LeClerc;s pass on Hamilton last year @ Monza for any applicable penalty nowadays... ;-)

@@brbroberts1 Absolutely wrong! Brillant overtake, yes, but nowadays it would be illegal: Zanardi ending his overtake-move off track, leaving track with all 4 wheels, He returning unsafely to the track, forcing Herta to brak!

UnimatrixOne Watch the video again, the two left side tires remained on the asphalt.

Before Bryan Herta sleeps he checks his closet and underneath his bed for Alex Zanardi. Haha... In all seriousness though I was a huge Herta fan but I can't even count the times Zanardi burnt Herta like that during a race. Embarrassing really...Herta would have had 2-3 more wins during CART if it wasn't for Zanardi.

if I was a steward I would rule that he was ahead of Herta when he goes off and never loses the position so he defended but never gained an advantage. And because it was AWESOME!

The track was defined as the metaled surface I.e. the asphalt, and z barely kept two wheels on it. You could cross the curbs and white lines anywhere but the pit in/out. He exploited a loophole in the rules.

I fully agree that too many limitations are bad for racing. But check out what happens if there are too few rules: In MotoGp Marc Marquez pushed 3 drivers out in one race. This should not happen every racing weekend.

Wow what a loophole. He was already ahead before cutting the corner. So he did indeed cut a corner, but not to gain a position. By this logic a driver could cut every corner on the track so long as they weren't overtaking somebody in the process. An oversight by the rule makers.

Herta had the racing line. Zanardi would have crashed both of them out, if Herta hadn't moved. Should've been a time penalty or stop & go, at least. Politics.

I watched that race on tv and was incensed. When you take out all the extraneous stuff, Zanardi cut the corner to make the pass. That's all and it's not legal. Those who say there are too many rules are ignoring the fact that rules like this one are absolutely necessary for racing to make any sense. Those who say Zanardi was in the lead ignore the fact that his line and speed carried into the corner made any other path impossible. Those who say Herta blocked can clearly see that Herta gave way to Zanardi, hence no crash. Herta was denied his first victory by a dumb but ultimately successful move.

Those who say he went off-track are wrong because he kept two wheels on the asphalt.

yeah, I get what people are saying about retaining the position except he didn't really have the position with any control of the vehicle on the track. So weird and wild that it has this folklore around it and known as "the pass". Max Verstappen must have cut his teeth on this "technique".

3 years on and Max has pretty much won a championship doing exactly that and apparently it's ok for some reason.

Cause it wasn’t legal but what a great moment in sport along with Rossi on Casey stoner at the same corner.

When you watch this you can understand why he lost control of his car exiting the pits and got his legs chopped off. Zanardi was often clueless on the track. Great heart though, to come back.

franchitti had left oil at the pit exit from when he had a engine failure earlier in the race, you can see he pulls off across the pit exit to get the car off the track itself if you go back and watch
