I have been binge watching 90s Nascar races. Ken Schrader always seemed to be very competitive every week. Just had a lot of tough luck. Should of had way more than 4 wins in the cup series.
I started watching Nascar when i was 14 in 96. I always like Jeff Gordon back then cuz he was good and i love his rainbow car but I know the Intimadator was a great one. Just watched the documentary Blink of an Eye over the weekend and was shocked how he died. Didnt watched Nascars for a long long long time and now Im back and became a collector of their diecast cars which are very cool.
One of the things I miss most about the 90's is the commentary was at it's peak. Ned, BP, Ken Squier, & Eli Gold were amazing. But yeah Ned in particular was an absolute gentleman
@@michaelefferson5780and passed that on to his son. That's why he'll always be my favorite. Never dumped anyone like others. Biting my tongue, but yeah, ask Texas Terry how he feels about being "Intimidated". DJ, forever the gentlemen and a BADASS behind the wheel
@@NamathCB- D.J. was my favorite driver. He never expected or used his father’s name to gain a ride. He was his own man and paid his dues to get into a top tier ride. When he was driving that beautiful “blue bullet” for RYR, he was a threat pretty much every week. If not for a horrible black flag penalty at Sears Point in 1997, I firmly believe he wins the championship that year as well.
1996 1. Austin City Limits in its 21st season on PBS. Kenny Chesney released his 3rd album "Me and You". 2. Access Hollywood and Judge Judy make their syndication debuts. 3. Mark Wills released his self-titled debut album.
Can we appreciate for a minute too how amazing the commentary was here as well?? Crisp and well-delivered. Not the constant garbage of hollering and shrieking for shock and aw! Which you get from FOX these days EVERY SINGLE LAP.
Man, and I thought TheRacingJungle's uploads were high quality. This blows that one out of the water. Better colors, and the sound is more natural and less compressed. Thank you.
Thank God for RU-vid. Now I can go back and watch all the Daytona 500s from the beginning. I came to Canada in Feb 96 from the Phils and I became a fan of Nascar and enjoyed watching it on the weekends. Just watched the documentary Blink of an Eye with the Story of Mike Waltrip and did know how Dale died back in 2001. I just started collecting all the cool Nascar 1:24 Die Cast and Im trying to get all my fav drivers. It is truelly the Great American race and Im happy I got to see them in Canada. Hope someday, I'll make my way down there to Daytona and watch the race in person with my son who loves racing and racecars. Someday...
Man it's actually sad hearing Dale and Kenny's lighthearted interviews after finishing so strong here and knowing 5 years later Schrader would be giving that heartbreaking interview 😢
I never realized that Bud Moore's #15 car helped Dale (Jarrett) pass Earnhardt both times (unless I missed a pass afterwards - had to skim the race abit). '93 Geoff Bodine was driving it. Ironically it was also one of Earnhardt's old rides.
Man, I wish we could get back to these days. You had great racing and even better personalities. Now we have a bunch of robots running around in basically the same car who are more concerned with thanking their sponsors than connecting with the fans. I can’t remember the last time I watched a race for more than 10 or 15 minutes. At least we still have these old memories.
Goes to show that Michael Waltrip was always good at drafting and finally when he got a solid ride with DEI, he won 3 races, 2 Daytona 500s and a Talladega win
I" m watching the NASCAR race car all day I AM 60 years old today I was born in 1958 at my 10 years old I start the engens of hotwheels red line race Cars on the hotwheels race track by mattel USA in Houston Texas my daddy was the Dr Benton COOLEY maker of hearts in the BABIES hospital in Houston Texas 1959
Man watching this back and can't help but think about just how unfair all that fan hate Sterling got for the crash really was.... Dale didn't have a teammate at this time but him and Marlin reminded me of Jr & Stewart! You can tell he felt comfortable racing with Sterling, maybe even too comfortable in the end :( I love Dale as much as anyone but the blocking is what did it and it's just messed up that Sterling Marlin literally got death threats over it SMH He did an interview and talks about it on Dale Jr's podcast... He's actually in tough shape with Parkinson's for those who don't know ...
Loved it when there used to be the art of painting a race car the individual cars were special to the driver they just gleaned now we get dull wraps ugghhh i know it's all for weight and cost its just another of the wonderful things in this era of racing that are long gone.
@NASTY CANASTA Unfortunately, multiple primary sponsors are a necessity these days. The budget for a full season is at least $20 million for a top team (Gibbs, Penske, Stewart-Haas), and no one is willing to renew for that price. Therefore, Brad Keselowski carries sponsorship not only from Miller, but also Alliance, Auto Trader, Discount Tire, and Wurth. It's been many years since NASCAR's champion had one primary sponsor, but that could change if costs came down.
Best Daytona 500 ever, imo. CBS couldn’t have covered this race any better. Couldn’t ask for a nicer day (weather wise) to have a race. Couldn’t ask for a more competitive race. It just turned out perfect in 1996. Well, except for maybe my driver Dale Earnhardt coming up short once again. Nah……I have no hard feelings. Dale Jarrett/Robert Yates’ #88 Ford just proved to be too strong at the end.
This is when I became a DJ fan. This guy paid his dues. He was so deserving of a second RYR ride after filling in for Ernie Irvin the way he did. That 88 Quality Care Ford was a threat every race with that Yates horsepower underneath the hood of that beautiful blue bullet.
This one kind of reminded me of the War of the Worlds radiocast. At the 2:25:09 mark it suddenly switches to the '93 race without much warning and it's easy to think it's over, if you're not paying attention (as I wasn't). Lol.
AZNative43 you hate it for Andretti. He had a great race until the costly pit stop mistake happened. As soon as he was recovering, he crashes. Hate it for John

In 1996: 37.1; Mark Martin's age would be closest to that average. Dave Marcis (54) is the oldest, and Jeff Gordon (24) the youngest. In 2020: 30.6; Austin Dillon's age would be closest to that average. Brendan Gaughan (44) is the oldest, and Justin Haley (20) the youngest.
Not one for conspiracy theories, but I don't believe that Marlin had the same car that dominated at Daytona and Talladega the year before. He was near the front but the car didn't have the ability to pass and pull away. As this also the first year that the winning car would be on display for the entire season. Fast forward to the next two Superspeedway races, and Marlin was unstoppable. That's where we saw the real Morgan McClure supercar in action.
Oh, your theory is spot on...I buy it. Of course, in retrospect, I'm sure they regretted not going after the 500 with that car, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to wreck it at Talladega that July lol
Well the car itself could be the same but in 96 nascar change the engine specs for restrictor plate cars from the year before mainly cut the compression ratio down from the year before
It was the same car, as someone mentioned, NASCAR made some changes under the hood and the #4 team missed the motor setup. They figured it out in time for the next plate race though which he won (96 Winston 500) & then the next one after that as well (96 Pepsi 400). At the Diehard, the car was fast once again but now it seemed like Earnhardt had finally caught back up and was able to run with and pass the #4 that is until the wreck. That was the most traumatic end to a dominant racecar I ever saw, I honestly almost cried when they showed Marlins destroyed car on the back of the flatbed, they never had a car that good again nor did Morgan McLure ever win another points paying plate race. If I was Sterling, I would have had the car trucked to my house & rebuilt and retired added to my car collection.
Sure wish I could go back I was racing late model modified seems like so long ago but really wasn't my son was born this year in August . I do like it better than today's nascar racing just ant the same no 170,000 people going now such a shame nascar.
The 16th year of NASCAR Racing on Philippine Television commenced with the 38th Annual Daytona 500, held at the Daytona International Speedway, which was notable for the 2nd Dale and Dale Show, where Dale Jarrett defeated the late Dale Earnhardt again. The centerpiece event of the 1996 Daytona Speedweeks, the season opener of the 1996 NASCAR Winston Cup Series in Winston America season, and the first NASCAR on GMA race of '96 was jointly produced by Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc. and aired live, nationwide, and via-satellite on GMA Network on February 19, 1996, and also aired for the first time on Citynet Television 27, with a radio simulcast on DZBB 594 Radyo Bisig Bayan and Campus Radio 97.1 WLS FM
