Due to this Mercedes had to sell the W140 for 25% more than the W126. This in turn led to lower sales numbers than they expected. At that point they decided that they would never have so much of the company's time and money invested in 1 model again. So after that, Mercedes started creating endless models. C class and A class and R class and ML class and SLK, GL, GLA, GLS, GLE, CLS, minivan suv xyz class, to diversify their lineup and never have so many of their eggs in 1 basket again. They also moved away from the concept of engineers building the best car possible and then determining price afterwards, to the accountants picking a price and telling the engineers to make the car to that price point. The 3 pointed Mercedes Star used to represent automotive supremacy. Ever since the W140, that star has been fading.
