Two words: Mike Richter. However, the U.S. outplayed Canada in this one. What great chemistry they had in this one. No one can deny the depth of talent that Team Canada had in this event: guess that's what makes this win so special.
Ugh.... What a horrible memory this game was... This was far and away the most painful defeat I have ever witnessed as a fan... I was completely crushed by this loss... I can't even imagine what it was like for Team Canada... Even the glory of double olympic hockey gold for Canada in 2002 on Americain soil hasn't removed the tarnish from this bitter moment... on my home rink too... We were beaten by the best... a salute to the the victor is offered. :|
I watched the end of this game in the Thousand Islands in Upstate New York, which is about two miles south of the U.S. Canadian border. With score tied this Canadian couple walk in and order two bottles Molsen Canadian. After the U.S. scored all those goals the looks on their faces were utter devastation. As the bar full of the jovial Americans surrounding them erupted into drunken cheers of "USA, USA ..." the couple couldn't get out fast enough, leaving their nearly full Molsen Canadians behind.
This was honestly the highlight of American Hockey in the '90s. The USA has not been able to match their level of play since this tournament. I have all three games on videotape somewhere in my collection.
Don't forget Bobby Ryan, T.J. Oshie, David Backes, Ryan Suter, David Booth, Ryan Whitney, Blake Wheeler, Erik Johnson, Kyle Okposo, and some of the other youngsters that might not make the 2010 team but set us up nicely for the future. And we'll bring with us to Vancouver Tim Thomas, who's going to win the Vezina, and Ryan Miller to keep the puck out of the net. 1996 was just the beginning, within a generation USA will be the world's pre-eminent hockey power, and that scares Canada to death.
Brett Hull has an American mother and a Canadian father. He was born in Canada only because his birthday is in August and the Hull family spent the offseason in Ontario instead of Chicago where they lived year-round. It is worth noting that he has four siblings and they were all born in Chicago. He is just as much an American as he is a Canadian.
I always loved Tony Amonte, guy was awesome. Also, as a Devils fan, I'm more than willing to man up and admit Mike Richter was one of my favorite goalies ever. This tournament was the biggest reason why, for me personally.
two great moments for USA hockey, winning the gold medal in 1980 over the team that could not be beaten the Soviet Union and winning the gold medal in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and beating Canada at their own game
Wont deny it the Canadians beat US in 2002...Hockey is your sport...but for us Americans who like hockey this was HUGE in 96...Sadly it barely got any media coverage in the US...Now when it comes to Vancouver in 2010 it will be crazy for you up North
this USA team was the best team ever..Weight, Hull, Leetch, Modano, Guerin, Tkachuk Amonte, K.Hatcher, D.Hatcher, Roenick,LeClair,LaFontaine, Smolinski, Deadmarsh,Young, etc...the best team i ever seen..i am Slovak but i love USA players
I'm American and I agree. In 2010 DP can be the taxi squad goalie, but that's it. Thomas will win the Vezina and probably won't be our starter at the Olys, so what chance does DP, who can't pour a cup of coffee without getting hurt, have?
Go back and look at USA's roster from this game. It was LOADED. If Canada had any advantage in talent it was slight. Same with the Olympics in 1998 and 2002 and the World Cup in 2004. Torino in 2006 was a tough year for USA, we were transitioning between generations (not that being talented won Canada any medals that time). Our team in 2010 will be young but stacked. Kane, Mueller, the Johnsons, the Killer K's (Kessel and Kessler, and Komisarek), Ryan Miller. We'll be solid for years.
Man, I remember I went to bed when Canada went up 2-1. I was laying there and was like, well I want to see what the trophy looks like when they award it. So glad I turned it back on.
what a beautiful win..I expect the US to put up a great run in the 2010 Olympics, no doubt. There's definately another wave of big talent from the US right now, although young. All we need is teamwork and I see no reason why we can't medal this time around.
this was like the best thing i ever saw when i was a kid playing hockey everyday in the street then ice hockey all year... i was like 9 when this happened and it was so huge to me ill love hockey forever... canada put up a hell of a fight though and were so stacked, but it was the wrong time for canada with that USA talent in the prime of their careers
Team Canada's roster was full so the Canadian coaching staff suggested he play for Team USA and since that point on he sported the Red, White, and Blue. He could have argued it like Nabokov did to play for Russia, but from his own mouth: "Just as much an American as I am Canadian."
This as the first best-on-best tournament I saw and this game was so intense. It was hard to see Canada lose. The US deserved to win. I know people like Don Cherry keep on going on about that possible high-stick at 4:06. It certainly looked like it would've been a high stick if there was a way to determine it but the referees made the right call. Also, we're not exactly in a position to complain when Yzerman scored on what was clearly an offside in Game 1 OT. Would've been interesting to see what would've happened with Scotty Bowman, Mario Lemieux, Ray Bourque and Patrick Roy participated
i agree all of these games were super intense this last World Cup was a dud.........i still can't get over the level of talent that was in the '96 World Cup
We all know hockey is way more popular in Canada than in USA. That's why I love it when we beat them, because it proves we're just as good. USA! USA! USA! Oh and go Sabres!
Roy never really represented canada except for nagano. Grant fuhr and billy Ranford were always the goalies for canada throughout the 80's and early 90's and canada won with them. Cujo played in a few of them and now its broduer's job!
I agree... I remember watching this game, and wondering what the heck does Canada have to do to win this game... This is a game that many Canadians remember because it looked like this was the storybook ending to a game.... Then USA scored 3 goals and destroyed the hearts of Canadians...lol
I would actually say the 1996 World Cup was even more significant. Everyone knows 1980 was a fluke, nobody disputes that. 1996 was the first time our best played the rest of the world's best in a major tournament and won. And not only did we win, but we beat might Canada 3 out of 4, including two games in Montreal. That was the moment when American hockey arrived.
Vincent Damphouse was such a choke artist- Sather did the USA a real solid keeping him on the ice so much-garbage player who only knew how to hack and whack w that club of his. Also loved how Lemieux whiffed on that shot attempt in the 3rd period too. Richter stood on his head for the first 2 periods and totally deserved the MVP.
35 saves by richter, the true hero of the world cup... hull and deadmarsh are both 1/2 american, hull started his hockey career in the USA, sorry! it was sweet winning it in Canada
I've been there twice actually. Once to Vancouver, once to Montreal. I loved Vancouver, a great city. Montreal...not so much, people were rude. You must be from Montreal.
yea USA hockey is getting a lot of young talent, they went through a tough time in Torino in 2006, but they are buiding back up and are going to be a power once again, they had lots of talent in the 90s with guys like Brett Hull, Mike Modono, Mike Richter, Brian Leetch, Tony Amonte, Derian Hatcher, Kevin Hatcher, John Leclair, Mathieu Schenider, etc. but they all got older and when there careers were done USA had no one to step in, but all the young talent is ready to play USA on the rise again
@kool1717 Thank You Sir, I do think many fans of Canada may argue with Americans, I do conflict with the ones that say their so much better than us because of one victory the thing I say is that you dominate in so many other sports so we like to think that we are dominant in Hockey, which has been proven over the last 40 years or so. But I have so much respect for nice ones like you, I really do enjoy sportsmanship from great people like you Thank You Very Much and we are allies for Wars Thanks!
What I remember of this whole world cup was how Canada struggled to get to the final...They almost were eliminated in the Semi's by Sweden....I wish someone could post that game....Sweden was all over Canada during that game, and Sweden hit like 3 or 4 posts in the Overtime before Canada Scored....Does anyone have that game?
I remember. Canada had homer judges in that game. Canada more then a handful with Sundin and Forsberg in that game. Only if Sweden had a real goalie at that time instead of Salo..
@@roimari well....that's some harsh criticism for the 2nd best swedish goalie all time behind Lundqvist. The pool for swedish goalies was thin at the time ...Tommy Soderstrom was not very good and Johan Herberg was still too young I believe. As for the referees I can see that since the tournament was north American dominated after the round robin. However I also think Canada not having it's true best there at the tournament made the whole tournament competitive. We were missing players like Lemieux Roy, borque, kariya to name a few.
@@Seoulmanaja I think Sandström was better then Salo. Salo had some development in NHL. But when I look him from Lillehammer Olympics and here.. Sweden was behind in the goalie market at that period. Currently they produce top goalies. With Salo Sweden didn't have any big success at the Olympics with NHL players.
It's Alright Canada, Congratulations USA, but if I may say... Winning those Canada Cups, and from what I remember... Canada in Men's and Women's hase taken 5 out of 6 possible Gold Medals, we have been in the World Junior Finals since 2002, winning 5 of those, USA has only won 2, and we have won the World Cup of Hockey and have been in the Finals for the World Hockey Championship 7 out of the last 9 years
Here's another fair assessment of the game: when the chips were down and someone needed to come through in the clutch, we did, and you didn't. We scored three goals in the dying minutes of a tie game, and the best you could muster was the biggest swing-and-miss (Gretzky) outside of baseball. Another fair assesment, we scored at least three if nor four legit goals that game. Both your goals, especially the Foote one, were fluky.
Hahaha, can you imagine the pressure these guys are going to be under? And under that pressure they have to stare down a line of Ovechkin-Malkin-Kovalchuk. No way they win gold!
And for all those who say the "US doesn't care about hockey, it's the south that doesn't, the majority of our best palyers come from New England, Minnesota, Michigan, New York
A duel citizen by birth, but an American through-and-through. Someone who even considered themselves half-Canadian would at least show some respect for Canada, but he didn't.
yea you are right I am a Pens fan too, but in the olympics you always go with your home country, you are right US is due to beat Canada, and could it be an omen because next year it will be thirty years since the Miracle at Lake Placcid
You could put King Kong and Godzilla on defense and they couldn't stop a line of Ovechkin-Malkin-Kovalchuk. Yes Canada has amazing defensemen, but Russia has the kind of talent up front to make them irrelevant. Despite his bad series against the Ducks, Nabakov is still an elite goalie. One bad series doesn't change that(and it's not like Luongo did any better against the Hawks). Khabibulin had an awesome year and was the best goalie in the 2002 Olys. Russia will be able to man the pipes.
I love both these teams... OK!! But Mario was not in this tourney and I think USA had players that wanted this more than Canada because of how many players that chose to sit it out compared to all the Americans that were willing to go the extra mile.. Richter stole the show
lmfao this was the best to see how jam packed with the best of the best superstars on team canada got shut down by the american stars haha just to see all their slumping faces on nthe bench in disbelief was all worth it
@ViaggioFM this was never robbery i think canada has one good team and their win in 2010 was good and i was still glad USA won sliver......Canada is great and there is no possibility that Canada would still win if they had Brodeur at goaltending.... USA already got this win and Canada got their win in 2010 fair and square and I have nothing aganist Team Canada
Dude, there's your problem, stop comparing Canada of the past to USA of the past. I admit that from the beginning of time until about 1994 or so Canada was far better than the USA at hockey. But times have changed, we've improved significantly and the results prove it. We won the 1996 World Cup, got a silver in the 2002 Olympics, made the semis of the 2004 World Cup. We're legit now. Recognize, you silly Canuck.
So you don't think Canada would have been stronger with Lemiex, Roy, Kariya, and Borque? I know the players and fans involved wanted it equally bad but the World Cup doesn't hold nearly the prestige as the Olympics. YES Canada wants to beat USA at at least one sport but the true rivalry is with the Russians... USA was given a very respectable ovation at both the qualification round game and gold medal games..And they were also cheered when not playing Canada
All right let’s look at how fixed this was. For her feet the height of the crossbar is high-sticking Brett Hall is 6 feet and his stick was just below his shoulders so how was that illegal goal. Well Brian Burke a cocky American what’s the official goal judge for this tournament and he made the ruling that it was a good goal which was total illegal and not a good goal
See, this is what I'm talking about. I don't disagree with your post per se but "we were the better team" is only a valid excuse when Canada loses. I don't hear Canada rushing to give Russia credit for being the better team for 59:54 or so of the junior game last year. And USA was clearly the better team against Slovakia and lost, and all I hear from Canada is "OMG the USA sucks, you can't even beat Slovakia!" Either evenly apply the "we were the better team" crap or drop it altogether.
