What a class act by Joe Sakic. Giving the stanley cup to Bourque before raising it up himself. Sakic knew how bad Bourque wanted that cup. There will never be another leader like Sakic.
I have watched this video about 50 times and i have gotten chills every single time. Gary Thorne's best call of all-time. "And after 22 years, RAYMOND BOURQUE" priceless.
Honestly, I got way more chills when Mike Haynes from the radio has his most famous of the Cup. ...the Stanley Cup to Joe Sakic - HE IMMEDIATELY TURNS AND HANDS IT TO RAY BOURQUE! WHO LIFT IT UP AND OVER HIS HEAD!!!! RAY BOURQUE! 22 YEARS, HAVE WAITED FOR THIS MOMENT!!!! SAKIC DIDN'T EVEN LIFT IT OVER HIS HEAD, HE GAVE IT RIGHT TO RAY BOURQUE, WHO KISSES THE CUP, AND THE CROWD AT THE PEPSI CENTER EXPLODES!!!! TEARS COMING DOWN THE EYES OF RAY BOURQUE! RAY BOURQUE HAS TEARS COMING DOWN HIS CHEEKS, HE HAS THE CUP OVER HIS HEAD, And now he takes a spin!
I get the chills evey time I watch this. Sakic was such a class act handing the Cup straight to Borque. Man he had one of the most wickedest wrist shots ever. Marty's reaction to that goal is priceless. He's like, "dafuq just happened!?". LOL
That 3rd goal by Sakic was the sexiest wrist shot I've ever seen. Broduer was like, "wtf just happened????" And keep in mind Broduer is a top 10 goalie of all time too. Sakic had the dirtiest wrist shot ever.
This is one of my all time favorite videos. Even in this short highlight video, Thorne and Clement handle the storytelling in such a compelling fashion. Miss having those guys calling hockey games.
That Sakic goal is the sickest goal of all time. Pure skill... No bullshit hops, no deflections...just pure skill. And as a long time Bruins fan turned Aves fan when they debuted...this moment was just fucking unbelievably amazing for my childhood. Thank you Ray, Joe, Petr, Patrick and the rest of that filthy squad they had at this point in time. Just a perfect example of what sports should be all about.
in my opinion ray bourque is the greatest bruins player of all time, no offense to bobby orr or esposito or bergeron or the other greats we have had, but ray was just a pure player and the heart of the organization and will always be
I still can’t believe we finally won it all. It took so long my 14th season as an Avs fan finally ended in the thing I waited my entire life for. Maybe I make this team too much of a personality trait and I really shouldn’t but like I love this team. Everytime we lost I came back to this magical moment in the year 2001. I wasn’t even thought of but I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to win the cup for Ray
I get chills and teary eyed every single time I hear Gary Thorne say "The Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup, RAYMOND BOURQUE A DREAM HAS COME TRUE!!!
Two things stand out from this clip. 1) Gary Thorne was a awesome hockey announcer (People say he "pulled for Colorado in this game, but he was the Devils announcer back in the mid to late 80's) 2) Joe Sakic was a class act and a special player
@@lelouchvibritannia4028 I am a hug wings fan and I hated Colorado won but boutique was cool I respected him and sakic. Everyone else I wanted a beat down lol
21 years later Winning the Stanley Cup again, let alone being in the Stanley Cup Finals is a big accomplishment This was a long one in the making for sure and I love them for beating Tampa Bay in a dominating way
hunterb89 You're a Red Wings fan, your argument is invalid. How much is that POS Bertuzzi making now? ...not as much as Steve Moore. (oh wait they settled!)
Matt Romero Your argument about Bertuzzi isn't valid. He ain't a Red Wing anymore. Besides... What's Bertuzzi gotta do with THIS video? I don't understand...?
Damn I remember watching this with my friends when I was 9 years old and we were screaming and yelling watching that cup getting raised up as we all teared up. Hopefully with all this young talent the cup will come back in the next couple of years!! :) Go Avs!!!!
I still get goosebumps watching these highlights, I still remember where I was and what I was doing when this game dropped, was around 4am UK time when the match finished and being a 17 y old was absolutely buzzing for days, its coming back home I can feel it
I know it's already been said, but this is my favorite sports moment. Sakic's classy move, the knowledgeable and appreciative fans, and Bourque's genuine and beautiful emotion combine for a moment than, eight years later, gives me chills and tightens my throat.
Loved that Super Joe #19 scored the last goal of the season. Still proud of that team. And Joe continues his excellence by building a phenomenal team this year. Go Av’s!
To this day I still get goosebumps and get that tear in the eyes when I watch this amazing part of history!! Let's bring Lord Stanley back to Colorado!!! GO AVS GO!!!!
My personal opinion: The greatest call ever by an announcer and you can pick either of them cause they both give me chills and I'm not an Avalanche nor am I a Bruins fan but there's something special about the following: 1.The Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup. Raymond Bourque. A dream has come true!!! 2. And after 22 years.... Raymond Bourque!!!
Honestly that era was the most boring era in the sport's history. Most of the games were low-scoring, trap-dominated, clutch-and-grab garbage and there were only like 4 teams capable of winning the Cup. Also the rules sucked. You would hook and pull people down no problem, but god forbid you passed the puck over 2 lines. It's a shame that so many of the greats were forced to play with that awful strategy and rules. 2005-06 was the beginning of something wonderful. More goals, more speed and skill, more parity thanks to the salary cap, and no more clutch-and-grab BS.
The best part is that the Avalanche had Quebec DNA in them. When the Quebec Nordique left Quebec, they form what would become the Colorado Avalanche and win the Stanley Cup at their first season. A big win for Colorado. A utter loss for Quebec if you ask me.
I was so lucky to grow up in Colorado playing hockey during this time. I got to play against Bourque and Roy’s sons, meeting both of them along with Sakic and getting their autographs. Those are memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
i was 13 years old when this happened growing up in boston Raymond Bourque was and still is my IDOL! I cried i was so happy when he won the cup, i opened up the window and heard people cheering all through out their homes and the streets as if Boston just won the cup!
The level of respect for Bourque, and the class of Sakic captured in the moment when Sakic hands the cup to Bourque without first raising it himself is awe inspiring. All of us that witnessed this live may never see another moment like that again.
Absolute best moment in hockey history. I am being biased as I live in Colorado and have loved the Avalanche since day 1, but even if I wasn't a Colorado guy, I would still rank this #1. Ohhhh, the good ol' days.
I read your sentence in my head like this " I used to like hockey when it was cool, it is so mainstream now" Hockey is still incredible, and it will never stop being!
As a Bruins fan, I watched this game with my Grandfather. I was 10 years old when this happened. My Grandfather was crying when Ray got the cup, ever since then I have been hooked on hockey. 3 weeks later he died and since then I have loved the Bruins. This season I cried when the Bruins won.
The back to back Stanley Cups was definitely something special. It was a joy watching those two power houses in the Playoffs during the late 90's and early 2000's.
When I was little, my dad and I were walking through the Pepsi Center before a midday weekend game. We were picking up our tickets at will call. I turned a corner and ran into a guy in a suit, I just said sorry. My dad stopped in his tracks, said "Hey Pierre." You can tell, simply by the success CO had while he was GM, he was one of the greatest of all time. If not the best at picking up big names.
irishwhip03 where was brodeur in gm 6 n 7?? No where to be found, Roy came through in the clutch not 1nce, but 2wice, both in elimination gms one of them on the road
Sad part is, they were SO freaking close to a bunch more. 1997 Flyers? Would have crushed them. 1999 Sabres? Would have wiped the floor with them. 2002 Hurricanes? Puhleeze....the 1996 Finals would have looked competitive by comparison. The 2000 Devils were the only team that would have had a shot against the 1996-2002 Avs...the Avs would have wiped the floor with the 1998 Capitals as well, but I'm only counting the times they lost in the WCF to the Stars or the Wings. The "just one step short" years. Could have easily been 5 cups in 7 years.
That was an incredible Stanley Cup Finals. So many great players. We will never see that again with the salary cap. Both teams were loaded with Hall of Fame Talent. Literally the two best goalies ever playing in net for each team. Legendary Defensemen on both sides. Hell, even the injured list in this series had a Hall of Famer on it, that's how stacked these teams were.
Not an Avs/Bruins fan and I just got into hockey last year so I've never seen this man play or anything, but I get chills watching him finally win the Cup.
+Alan Baker maybe the most humble player ever. although he had the best nickname among the press around here in Denver......"Quoteless Joe" That always made me laugh
I'm a devout stars fan and despised the avalanche in those days but this is truly one of the greatest moments in hockey history. It doesn't even show the full celebration.
Passionate Devils fan here, sad loss, but man, what a moment. Seeing Classy Joe give that to Ray after a long career, wow... Just what a moment. Still gives me goosebumbs, even after being on the losing end of that one. That's hockey man.
Your welcome boston/ray bourque fans for the avs granting one ever the greatest players ever biggest wish, that you couldnt achieve in 21 years with him. Sincerely, a die hard avs fan.
This in my opinion is the greatest championship moment of the decade in professional sports. Here you have a man who waited 22 years to finally make this dream come true and the way the Avalanche supported him through the season including the fans was simply remarkable. I am a Red Wings fan and this is what the Stanley Cup finals are all about. Its about making the dream come true.
I've been a diehard Bruins fan my whole life and when I look back on this moment I realize it gives me the chills more than the Bruins winning the cup did 2 years ago. Don't know if it's Thorne's call compared to Emrick sounding like he was going to fall asleep, or the fact that Vancouver's play completely cheapened the feel of winning, or what, but this moment is my favorite in the NHL.
I'm a big Hockey fan & I'm huge Bruins fan & seeing Ray Bourque winning the Cup means alot to me then seeing the Bruins win the Cup & I was 11 years old when that game was played & I got to see both Ray Bourque & the Bruins win the Cup
i watched this game live in 2001 and i have never been so amazed in my life. it was true magic. so many of these players have gone on 2 be top stars of the teams that they left the avalanche for. this was like the dream team of hockey. ill never forget watching this sensational game. way to go aves
this might be one of the greatest series ever. two of the top goalies of all time going head to head. and joe sakic giving the cup to ray bourque the left....god this was great
Ok guys I know that those are your opinions but I feel the AVS will win. Just face the facts, home ice advantage, 52-27-7 record, Patrick Roy is our coach, and we have won the cup in our first year.
