Thanks for all the feedback guys. I resolved this issue. It was the missmatched tires causing the transfer case to bind and get stuck in 4-hi. Lessoned learned. I'm glad I caught it before I did serious damage. I wish the people at the garage that sold me the tires would have said something. $240 down the drain! The wouldn't take the tires back. I installed another macthing set from PepBoys to what was already on the back and all was well. So much for Verona Motors in Verona, PA.

My Jeep Liberty got stuck on 4HI, and the transfer case was suffering big time ( regular road), tried reversing and forwarding, neutral, engine running, nothing. But when I jacked the car from the front, worked like a charm

It's good to see so much interested in this vehicle considering I just purchased my third s10 Chevy Blazer the 4.3 liter v6 I love these cars I think they are you dime a dozen and I figure that if I study the ins and outs with the help of RU-vid I can maintain a good SUV at minimal expense compared to other people we sing vehicles in the long run a big plus I'll make a video of my own blazer and show it off good to see you guys on here

Mine has done this several times. The first time it was worn cable to the actuator, then it was the actuator, then a vaccum issue, now its gone out a fourth time. Gets old. 😅
@tiredfingers99
@tiredfingers99 11 лет назад
The actuator that pulls the cable on the front axels is that a vacuum actuator? Is there a vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case? Maybe that switch is leaking vacuum to the actuator? Not allowing the actuator to disengage?

Very late to the game but I turned the truck off . I held down the 4high and pulled it down until the 4 high started flashing mover about 20 foot and everything worked fine that way..

info on if your broke and have 2 new tires at a different size, you can put the two good tires on one side and the two bad tires on the other side. this may sound ganky. but it will keep the front and back diferencial ratio the same. this will save the transmission, t-case, and diferencial from breaking.

Hi can 4 wheel drive be removed from a Chevy trailblazer to drive in 2 wheel is it safe? I need a new transfer case..

I spent a lot of money in parts trouble shooting this when all it was is the passenger tires that didn't match the truck tires I had on the back. See comment below.

Even though the tires are the same size, in writing, it doesn't mean that they are physically the same size. Tires should be all the same on a 4x4.

Thanks Gee 3892, I was having problem shifting from 4LO to 2HI, turned out I should have been in neutral. Problem resolved but sadly my 1997 Blazer 4 door version differs in engine power. Sometimes I feel like riding a 5 ton tank barely moving even on 1 and others as if an 8cylinder engine on a kia picante(no offense). Does anyone know what might the problem be?

The tire size won't bother it as long as you don't have like a p235 15 and a p205 on front even tho their 15 inch tires theirs a big difference try stopping and go to reverse go back about 10 to 20 feet it will use ally take it out all the time yeah it sucks to have to find a place to stop and do it but if I don't mine will pop out but sounds like the front end just exploded but love my 94 s10 Chevy 4.3 vortec she got me out in some bad ass snow and she takes us out in the mud fields deer hunting hope it helps you you put a lot of parts on her them vacuum hose are very important to I see you change them

Think you may have the wrong size tires. My 1997 Blazer 4wd LS, has the towing package, but my tires are 235 70r15's by factory sticker. But, mine is the 4 door version.

I just bought me a 1997 bravada smarttrak everything seems to be working right but it might be stuck in 4low I’m not 100% sure this is my first time buying an awd vehicle. I’m only getting 16 mpg in the highway so I know something might be wrong just can’t pin point it

There is a spring in the front diff is broken its not your tires. The spring in the diff pulls against the actuator. Without that spring in the front diff the front diff willnot kick out right and kick in going down the road. This happened to me before.

I got a 99 Chevy Silverado Z71 Scott the 5-3 motor the four wheel drive will not come out of four hi or Auto 4 it will not go into 4 low and it will not go into too high now I replace transfer case transfer case motor the encoding motor the switch and the computer and it still is doing the same thing can anybody give me any ideas of what the hell is going on

Thing about it is, GM is notorious for building their vehicles with the cheapest junk they can come up with. My 98 will not disengage for anything. I was able to get it out of 4hi but it has since re-engaged itself. It needs an actuator motor more than likely. If it costs more than $500 to fix then I will just scrap it.

I did not think there would be a significant difference in diamerter between the LT205/75R15 light truch and SUV tire and the P205/75R15 passenger car tire but there obviously is. I would almost bet the ranch that problem is caused by the mixed tires.

I'm having a issue that when engaging in 4 hi and driving down the road for a least 4 miles I have to take it out of four drive because it started banging load under my truck like it's not staying engaged I've replaced alot of things on this zr2 and still can't use the 4x4 it's a 2001 4.3 any suggestions would be appreciated

Randy Roupe mine did that and it was a collapsed vacuum line into the transfer case ended up with a new transfer case.

There's another video on a Dodge ram where the lever that the electric actuator on the transfer case the motor on the actuator was not strong enough to move a sticky lever that engages the system to 4×4 or back to 2wd . That lever needs a good penetrating spray, the video talked of a can of something I've never heard of, anyway after they lubed the lever pivot brand new actuator he bought could move the lever easier consistently it was just gummed up after years of not changing the transfer case fluid . He could have saved the money if he would have tried taking the actuator out of the case and lubed the levers pivit pin before buying an expesive actuator. whatever sure it's probably similar on Gm products transfer case he tries the old one and it works fine might be your fix .

Hi! I cant seem to find any help with my 95 blazer. We cant seem to get it into 4hi. It's very confusing. Are you able to help?
@BlazerGuy1983
@BlazerGuy1983 9 лет назад
Hello. There are a few things it could be. The 4-wheel drive is vacuum controlled on these Blazers. Most common issue is the vacuum actuator under the battery. The diaphragm fails inside and causes it to not pull the cable on the front differential to engage the front axles. The other issue could be the actual encoder motor on the transfer case. Another common issue is the vacuum switch on top of the transfer case. If the cable isn't moving on the front differential there is a switch with a ball in it that will not send the signal to the selector switch on the dash to tell it 4-hi/lo in engaged. Also fluid condition/levels in the front differential and transfer case can effect this. Being a 95 it can be many issues. More than likely a vacuum leak causing your issue. Sometimes the switch on the dash can be bad but not as common as a vacuum issue. Hope this helps! My issue was mismatched tires causing my transfer case to bind slightly and not fully disengaging. This was due to tires spinning at different speeds from different dimensions. I changed the transfer case transmission fluid and drained and filled front differential with fresh gear oil, put 4 matching tires and I haven't had a single issue since with my 4-wheel drive.

Is the cable that is connected to the front differential allowed to fully lengthen or is it in the full disengage position? Meaning is the vacuum actuator fully filled with air? And its still not disengaged in the front? Maybe the cable is not long enough? What happens if you detach the cable to the front actuator, does the 4WD disengage fully then? If not, i think that's where the problem is.

Any leads on a stuck four wheel drive lever on a 95 suburban
@BlazerGuy1983
@BlazerGuy1983 9 лет назад
Hello.. Yes. I resolved the issue. It was caused from having different tired (non-matching) brands/types. I had truck tires on rear and car tires on the front. Even thought they where the "same size" there was a diameter difference from being different types, tread style and brand. The front tires where not spinning as fast as the rear causing the transfer case to bind and not fully disengage. The buttons showed it was disengage and back in 2-hi but, you could hear the roaring of the front wheels still being locked up slightly and tight steering that lead me to discover it wasn't full disengaging. Put 4 exact matching new tires on and the problem has been gone ever since. Hope this helps!

I had the same problem. I took the front drive shaft out completely but the front axle would not disengage until I went in reverse. That being said, It's definitely not your encoder motor, because all that does is open and close that vacuum switch that you already replaced (which opens and closes the 4wd diaphragm under the battery). Since you said your diaphragm is working, that proves that the encoder motor is doing it's one and only job of opening and closing the vacuum switch. It's also not your tires (in my case it wasn't at least) because that doesn't affect lateral movement of the front axle linkage. It's probably the spring in the front differential, like Jason Birdwell says, or the locker gear/sleeve in the front differential. I replaced the assembly and it fixed my problem. Edit: I see you resolved the problem but I'll leave mine up for other people to get info from.

I have the same Blazer ad you and I have a problem with it shifting outta park. It shifts fine when it's not been started for a while & is cool. But after the motor warms and you stop, you gotta wait till it cools again before it goes outta park again. Anyone know why?
@JohnSmith-ry8qj
@JohnSmith-ry8qj 5 лет назад
Are you pressing the brake pedal long enough to let the shifter lock disengage, my 97 Buick sometimes if I touch the brake and pull it out of park it wouldn't come out, later realizing you have to hold the brake longer giving the actuator time to release the shifter maybe just press the brake count to two, then try to pull out of park . Listen you will hear the click at the shifter. It's related to that circuit or the switch on the brake pedal or actuator at the shifter lock. Only thing about temp or time would make some sense the warmer the actuator the easier it works faster than when cold they are similar to door locks sometimes reliable sometimes not maybe something was spilled that was sticky, got right to the actuator making it stick, when cold and move easier when warm hope you find the problem! Another tip check brake pedal switch they are a cause, there is one for the brake lights and one switch that works the shifter actuator you should be able to just turn to ignition on without starting the engine so you can hear it click at the actuator and be able to pull out of park even without starting to hear if consistently releases the shifter, it takes at least a full second to work properly after the brake pedal has been depressed good luck console shouldn't be too difficult to remove and see the actuator maybe it's sticky maybe the switch at the pedal either way your removing the console for a better look or laying on your back in the floor board looking up have patience my friend the answer may be one of fore mentioned things talked about!!! Wait a minute only when it's cold it works better huh ?

Jeff Bodean this is pure bullshit what you've said. There are no 4wd ever created that you have to put into reverse to disengage. You're a moron and a bullshit artist. Most unhelpful comment ever. Your car's unique problem is nowhere near the norm.

Did you ever figure out the problem my 2003 Chevy blazer is stuck in 4wd high ?
@BlazerGuy1983
@BlazerGuy1983 8 лет назад
Yeah, I did. It ended up being the different tires I had installed on the front axle verses the rear. They had a different diameter due to type and brand cause the front wheels to spin at a different speed at the rear. This caused the transfer case to start to bind. Thank goodness I didn't damage it and quickly installed matching tires. I never gave it a thought but, on 4-wheel drive you have to replace all 4 tires with matching types/size/brand and tread depth and patterns or you will damage the tranny and or transfer case. What are your symptoms?

The 4wd computer cause the same problems as well sometimes disconnect the battery for a minute hook it back up and try it. I have a 2004 Blazer s10 will NEVER buy another one by the way the computer for these is about $600.00 and this is just for the 4wd. The only good thing about my Blazer is the engine that's it. It eats sensors,front hubs,changed them twice fuel pump, heater control valve the controls in the dash I mean. Lets see the trans needed work twice and now it's acting up again rotors and a lot of other things as well lost track. I guess I have a lemon and it's only has 98.000 miles on it!
