a Goddam beautifull restoration. You are an inspiration to other 3000gt gearheads. Currently drive one VR4 all stock. Aiding another buddy rebuilding his right now. complicated cars, but once you repair them to functionality there is no better satisfaction!
Thanks man. The best part of all is this has been a budget build and not just had money thrown at it. I paid £1200 for the car and £1000 for the paint job as I did all the stripping and rebuilding. Everything else was just remove, clean, repaint and refit. In total the car probably owes me 5k Max all in .
thats the only way to own a vr4 imo. i had a stock 99 and the maintenance even though i could afford it still hurt. that plus the insurance if you want full coverage. its a difficult car to own if you have little automotive knowledge. it's a performance machine right from the factory no doubt but so many problems come up if you dont stay on top of maintenance(more so than other ricers i feel). the major issue i had with mine is i threw 3 rear drive shafts, once damn near killing the guy i was racing, it kicked out and flew over his car. its an amazing car if you know what your getting into, one of the few rice burners i would actually call a "super car" but if your a novice and/or dont have disposable income its not a great car to own. also an issue i ran into when i bought mine used is the owner was not aware it required higher octane fuel, so be aware of that.
Love the video man, great job. This is one of the videos I didn't Skip through at all. I'm a hugeee fsn of 3000gt/got/stealth. I owned 2/of them. Personally I would pick it over suprs, rx7, 300zx or r33/34../I believe it looks better then all of them plus some people have no clue what these cars are capable of. Nice video again.
Thanks !! First ever attempt at making one so thought it didn't come out bad myself haha. These are VERY capable cars with the right mods. A Gallardo was at the track with me from these vids and ran a 12.44 I ran a 11,84 in a full fat road car with AC, stereo and all else it left the factory with. That's a 19 year old car slaying 200K worth of 'Supercar' in front of many many people haha
These cars were way too underrated but lately I see posts coming up about these cars and how they were way ahead of their time. Back in the day, this car didn't get the attention it deserved but the result of that is that now we can buy a vr4 with 60K miles for about $12 to 16K depending on model year, where is supra would set u back $35k plus.. Stock for stock, vr4 was faster then supra or 300zx or rx7. Like u said these cars can tare gallardo apart for total of $30k to $35k, that's including the price of the car and mods. I think styling wise the car is holding up real good too. I hope you keep making more videos, thx and cheers bud.
Jasko CR That is a shit load of technology from mitsu but still people back then did'nt appreciate if only they are aware what will be the trend 20yrs after Gto was born maybe they are much more gto running till now hope one day they (mitsu) bring this beast again and people will start to know what it is capable of
This car was misunderstood to begin with. Yes it was ahead of its time and it offered the technology that a decade later was offered in supercmars. When fast and furious was in the making they thought about featuring 3000gt since the movie was about junkyard scraps turning into street racers rather than high end models being raced they decided that 3000gt was a high end car for the type of movie they were doing and that's why they chose an eclipse and integra because anyone could buy and modify those. I'm actually glad they decided not to have the car in the movie because right now the price of a vr4 would be in upper 30s like the supra with is bs because or the price of supra you can buy Aston Martin v8 vantage 2006-2007 with very low miles. Supra or v8 vantage? It's a no Brainer to me. You have to be supra fanatic to chose it next to a decade younger Aston Martin.. just like NSX that sells for 80K, I can buy ferrari 360 that's much younger and faster.
On the other side it is better to be there cause it was a very cheap but fast reliable car. Here in the Philippines importer of scraps sell the gto really cheaper than any mark of supra. I will be buying one of these soon and i keep you posted to that.
build is complete but interior is thrash and body has damage to rear right qaurter panel from being t boned before i purchased it so qaurter is cut and being replaced and interior is difficult to find all in the same color so behind front seats is gutted out and currently working on 99 conversion( hood, headlights, dash and headlight buckets.) Im sticking to no spoiler at all. Basically body work, paint then interior. Ive been working on this car since 2009 hasnt seen the street since then spun a rod bearing on the highway (75mph) crankshaft was egg shaped so that started it all for me.
turk 182 thanks ! Exhaust was a CX Racing exhaust from from manifold s back. Gearbox was the standard non turbo AWD gearbox which lasts about 3 years before pushing the casings apart and eating itself. Standard the Non Turbo AWD’s run around 170ftlbs of torque, this used to run between 550-600ftlbs depending on tune haha
Great video, I loved what you did to this car. Fortunately enough, I just bought a 92 VR4 with ironically only 63,000 miles but it has been sitting for 8 years. I would like to know what you did before attempting to start the engine after such a long time. I plan on doing the 60K maintenance, drain oil and gas, fogging each cylinder with oil, and a new air and fuel filter all before I start her up. I was contemplating if I should remove the fuel lines to get all the old fuel out or just crank the engine with the fuel filter apart. Any sorta help is appreciated, thanks!
Hi, I replaced gas tank, fuel pump and injectors as the tank had sweated and corroded inside badly. I never did a 60K kit or anything, just fitted a new battery and cleaned out fuel system. Ive used it for the last 5 years without fault .
fastbikes76 Haha I guess I'm just being extra cautious. The only reason why I'm doing the 60K is because if that timing belt snaps, the engine is done for
DUDE U NEED TO 2 DA 60K(TIMING BELT, WATER PUMP/TENSIOER ETC) ASAP! the good thing since it 97...if the belt breaks it it will turn off the gen one n gen two do not(interfearing engine?)
Nah, if belt breaks and wrecks engine I will just through another in. DOHC non turbo engines are like £200 here so cheaper and easier to replace than a full 60K. That being said the car is maintained and serviced once a year which works out to roughly every 1800 miles !
remember to make sure fuel pump works in the back under the hatch stuff and tire well, and check the tank for rust. also check trigger plate on the crank for the CPS sensor, distributor as well, all my own issues with my SOHC but might help you too
Ok jdm model is something i wont see where im at. And after some more research here i have come to the conclusion you are telling the truth. well i thought i researched everthing about 3s's but jdm options are rare to see here and when you do there never n/a awd. Ill admit when im wrong and im doing that now. I guess i only researched what was relevant to my surrounding being here in the US. I coverted my 93 dodge stealth es to awd tt with 92 vr4 parts coming from donor i picked up at junk yard for $500 bucks(No title). and enginge came from my cousin who purchased a 91 dodge stealth rt tt with no compression so my cousin being wealthy picked up another motor and gave me original engine for free because he knew i needed it. Thanks for setting the record straight apologies from me to you. And keep the car healthy dying breed and under appreciated.
Really awesome video! I'm in the middle of doing the same thing. We dismantled the VR4 donor car two weeks ago and are now working on removing the rust and prepping the N/a for all the new paint and parts. Just curious but how long did it take you complete this transformation?
Thanks man ! The initial strip and rebuild took 3 months, of which 2 months the car was at the painters waiting for them to paint it. I used the car for a year as an NA before Twin turbo'ing it. That took me a month to the day to do. Work was carried out on my driveway on weekends and evenings when the lovely British weather permitted !
Hi, its never been on pure pump. The car runs on M20, 20% Methanol mixed directly in the main fuel tank. This way there are no pumps or small bottle to run out and no fail safes required. If I'm out of methanol, its because I'm outta fuel .
wish i could belive but some things missing...like the car started fwd but never showed awd swap(rear axles, driveline, transfer case and tranny)?? boosted 10:1 engine and drag racing with i would guess high boost as the car sticks and and hauls ass down the straight but never saw a donor car and if you bought the rear axle, drive line front tt brakes and rotors and tranny with transfer case should have got and 8:1 engine. to go with it. cant just twin turbo an sl and be done and it be awd... theres alot that goes with the conversion that was missing from video and makes me question your build. more detail on the build would be nice..
Anthony Kwiatkowski the car never started as an SL or fwd. it's a JDM car so AWD from the factory. It is the bone stock 10:1 Dohc engine with 13T bolted too it and running 23psi of boost. Nothing is missing and everything is exactly as it seems. Plenty of build threads on the UK forum :)
Jay Williams it’s a 382 LS2 V8 running a pair of BW300 turbos. Runs 9’s and traps at 150mph. Estimated power is around 1000+bhp. Drives to and from the events too !!! The owner is a legend haha
Bradley Motin didn’t need to tune anything, it was still running stock ecu but with the methanol it countered out any correction needed for the bigger injectors. I had a AFC fitted but it was all zero’d out.
